Security :: Would 'apt-get Autoremove Make' Be The Proper Command
Dec 29, 2010
I want to remove to help reduce vulnerabilities..
would 'apt-get autoremove make' be the proper command? It wants to remove about 30 or so packages. I don't want to lose anything i might need to run apache2 and similar packages (self-configured web server). Running Lenny.

Is there any way to find out what packages were removed by the last 'sudo apt-get autoremove' command? Is that info in a log somewhere? I am setting up a recently installed minimal install and my last autoremove seemed to remove some dependencies which has in turn killed my network connections, wired and wireless.

I have a CentOS 5 server in which I use Virtual Hosting and each domain has its own user/pass for login to upload files. The path is /var/www/vhosts/domain name]/httpdocs/What im attempting is setting up the creation of the [domain name] folder from an administration backend under PHP, which I am developing. What Im worried about is if I allow PHP to run command line commands such as mkdir, then what is stopping anyone from doing the same from their php files on my server??? What is the best way to properly setup my server to allow automated creation of the domain structure within my folder system

To hide the user input to be displayed on screen, use the terminal line setting command stty -echo, whatever the user enters after this command will not be displayed in the screen. to make the input characters get displayed on the screen use stty echo.

I have been trying to make a shortcut to my downloads folder on my desktop but I only seem to be able to create "link to downloads" folder. I thought this was just the same thing as a shortcut but when I run some programs from the folder they do not work correctly. They only work from the real 'downloads' folder and not the 'link to' folder

I'm just curious as to what security measure's I should be taking to make my box a little less vulnerable? I'm still experimenting/playing with Linux, use the net, IM, download this and that and was wondering how secure fedora 10 was out of the box?

I recently upgraded my Debian box from Jessie to Stretch. After this, apt informed me that I should issue "apt-get autoremove," however the package list to be effected was large and contained some important packages (xorg being just one example). Most of the packages are qt4 related, and I at first assumed qt5 equivalents had replaced them, but seeing network-manager and xorg in the list made me pause.

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

apt-get suggetsed I should remove some packages I was no longer using. I've read the threads that explain this, but unfortunately I did that just now, not when I actually ran the damn command. I must say, however, that there were lots of things I wasn't actually using, so it was useful in a way. But there is a problem:
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and to get my sound keys working (the mute, volume up and volume down keys) I had to go to Settings-->Regional & Accessibility-->Keyboard Layout and there in Keyboard model I chose the option Dell Laptop/Notebook Inspiron 6xxx/8xxx. I know that's not exactly my model, but that made my sound keys work fine. Well, since I did the autoremove thing, that stopped working. I haven't got a clue what library was being used to get the sound keys working.

I had installed Debian lenny just two dys back. i am using gnome-desktop. When using apt-get i tried apt-get autoremove and the result was that so many packages were removed for eg. nautilus, gnome-games, gnome-background etc. Then i tried to stop the process in between and installed the packages again (with apt-get install). Now after rebooting i am getting only the desktop without any icons and no commands are working. I can still go to single user mode. How can i get my desktop with all functions.

I've been using Debian for around ~3 months now, though before that a certain derivative thereof since the start of the year.Long story short is that I was installing packages, as you do, when apt-get prompted that I run apt-get autoremove, as it does. So, trusting the computer, I do, not bothering to read the chunk of packages that it recommends to remove. Life goes on, until a reboot reveals that there are issues.Short story shorter, a quick cat /var/log/dpkg.log | grep remove spits out the following:
root@kubrick:~# cat /var/log/dpkg.log | grep remove
2011-09-05 22:04:09 startup packages remove
2011-09-05 22:04:09 remove gnome-user-share 2.30.1-1 2.30.1-1

From the terminal I got this message: The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: libqt4-opengl freemat freemat-help libgfortran3 libsdl-ttf2.0-0 libmikmod2 libqt4-svg libblas3gf libamd2.2.0 libsdl-mixer1.2 libumfpack5.4.0 freemat-data libsmpeg0 Ok, what I really don't understand is that why is it that Freemat, my most important software, is listed as "no longer required"? Of course if I use sudo apt-get autoremove will remove all the mentioned packages including Freemat.

Running this software:
Linux 2.6 on a hacked LaCie NetworkSpace
installed SSHd 5.4
installed Samba 3.4
installed lighttpd 1.4
installed ProFTPD 1.3
I want:
Login with my account and same password on all of those. When i use passwd, the change should be reflected on all of them.
I have:
Samba uses encrypted passwords, and i must change passwords for samba with smbpasswd.
lighttpd uses separate password file, must change by hand.
ProFTPD and SSH use system login (/etc/shadow).
So far i found two possible solutions, but can't tell if i understood them right or how to achieve them: use LDAP as auth backend If i could make LDAP my auth backend, provided this is possible at all, lighttpd would use this directly, and PAM would use it for system login. Nevertheless, actually this can't work as Samba uses encrypted passwords. Correct? use Samba password backend, then make LDAP use that If passwd, login, etc would use Samba, i would work everywhere with MD4 hashed stuff. Lighttpd would send plain passwords (HTTP basic auth), and query LDAP, which in turn makes an MD4 hash, and tests for Sambas passwd. Will this work?

so, sometimes happen that while I'm on my pc comes my mom and say "can I look a things 10 minutes?", this means that I have to leave my computer in her hands for ten minutes... enough to make something wrong! In ubuntu there is a usefull button "start guest session"..but here in fedora I can't find it...So, I create a new user and I called it "Guest" and I eliminated the password, so they can access also without me... but I have some problem:a) I set the home directory of this guest in /tmp/guest thinking that in this way everytime the home directory will be clean... but this doesn't work...b) is there a way to prevent in all cases this account to autenticate as root? So, if they try to install something it hasn't to show the box "autenticate as root", it has to say only "you can't"

I'm involved in a project to students set up a network security training lab using vmware. I want to simulate (in a very rough way) scanning through a poorly configured router or firewall. The easiest way I can think of to simulate this is to use a linux vmware image with two virtual nic cards to act as a firewall with the attacker on the outside network and a domain controller, web server, and database server on the inside network.
I would like to start students off with a firewall script that exposes everything on their internal network to the attacker. Is there an easy way to (mis)configure iptables to do this?. The model I'm trying to replicate is something like this. Attackers were on a 10.10.x.x network, defenders were on a 192.168.x.x network. As an attacker I could nmap 192.168.x.x and see every machine and every service on the defenders side even if they moved a service to an unexpected location. how I can implement a similar configuration using a linux image as firewalls/routers in vmware?

I got BT's repo's set and ready to install, tho I haven't installed them all just yet cause I not wanna crash the system, so I guess what I am asking has anyone sucecfully done this and what are the specific risks here. I have uploaded crunch and that works fine if I do it manually from the command line. the kernal seems to be update-able as well to BT's Kernal, I am not sure if I should do this or not in fear it might crash the Ubuntu system somehow. I guess what I might do next is install everything but the Kernal and install the executable links to the drop down menu by hand per the menu structure.
What I would ideally want is to have all the functionality of BT in Ubuntu which is pretty close to where I am at. Also, when I am done I want to make a live CD of this system so that I not have to do this ever again as it is very time consuming. What program would be used for that? Would any of my user data transfere? I don't want my user data to be transferred to the live CD just the raw system data etc. Anyone done this and would like to chat via skype? that would be best, but I'll take any help I can get at this point. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 for all this.
