Ubuntu :: Virtual Box And Security

Sep 20, 2010

If I installed MS-Windows/Chrome OS on Virtualbox and one of them got virus, will ubuntu get that virus too or it's safe? because I want to remove windows permanently and only have it on Virtualbox in case I needed it. And what should I disable in Virtualbox in case someone hacked my windows so he won't get access to ubuntu.

What Im worried about is if I allow PHP to run command line commands such as mkdir, then what is stopping anyone from doing the same from their php files on my server??? What is the best way to properly setup my server to allow automated creation of the domain structure within my folder system

When you have a computer whose hard drive is partitioned with one part Windows and the other Linux, what are the concerns with viruses and transference across the two systems? Can viruses infect the windows side brought over through the Linux side (Firefox) or are the partitions completely separated? In other words, if all of your Internet voyages are through Firefox under Linux, is there any danger of infecting the Windows side of the computer? What about when having Linux installed within the Windows portion as a virtual system?

Security :: ClamAV Hangs On Reaching Virtual Devices?

Sep 6, 2010

I'm noodling around with Ubuntu 10.4.1, latest updates and kernel (2.6.32.24?).Anyway, I run ClamAv as root and it goes fine through almost all of my system (huge amount of it), including several virtual devices, where it hangs on pan0, which has some association with my network (eth0 would be for wired connection, and wlan0 for wireless, and pan0 is listed also, but I'm not at that machine right now, so I can't tell why it shows up. wlan0 is what I use to connect to the internet).Is there an issue for clamAV with virtual devices? Any workaround? I had to terminate the scan after it stayed hung for over 5 minutes on pan0.

Security :: IPtables Firewall Settings With Virtual Interface

I have a server with 14 IP's on eth0. I'm using virtual interfaces to handle the IP's, but the iptables don't seem to work on the virtual interface. It blocks ports that I want open. Ubuntu Security :: Access To A Virtual File System For The Thermocrom Without Needing To Launch Owfs As Root?

Feb 12, 2011

I have been trying to use my DS2490 USB to serial device with a Maxim .DG1921G thermocron with owfs. It is supposed to give me access to a virtual file system for the thermocrom without needing to launch owfs as root.

Networking :: Outgoing Local Trafic Over Virtual Interface Has Not Virtual Ip Address

Aug 25, 2009

When I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface.Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.

My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem.So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem

What I'm looking to do is when an email is sent to support@hostname.com to have it rotate through the members of the alias group. Server :: Virtual LDAP Server And Virtual Mediawiki Host - Can't Login With Users From LDAP

Jun 5, 2011

In the past I found some great help on this forum, so here goes. Bare with me because it's a long story. I'll try to be as complete as possible. I've installed and configured OpenLdap on a virtual machine with ip 192.168.39.134. I've added 2 users via LAM. In the ou WikiUsers and the domain is wiki.local.

I've then created another host with ip 192.168.39.133 with mediawiki installed on it. Then I added the extension LDAPAuthenthication. In the LdapAuthentication file I added this code (only the last paragraph is mine, I added the others to show it's location in the script):

Quote:

$path = array( $IP, "$IP/includes", "$IP/languages" );
set_include_path( implode( PATH_SEPARATOR, $path ) . PATH_SEPARATOR . get_include_path() );

[code]...

I know I'm close because I can't register any new users or accounts on the mediawiki site. Although I could before I added the LDAP service. This is indeed all just to test and get to know how LDAP works. That's why it's all virtual in VMWare. I did not really configure anything on the LDAP, i just installed it and chose a domain (wiki.local).

Ubuntu Security :: Basics Of Good Security Of Small Commercial Website?

Jan 17, 2011

1. I understand you can protect your files or directories in your website by setting file/directory permissions. The meaning of r w x is clear to me, but I'm not sure how to proceed... Starting with the index.html file, if I wanted to make it so that anyone in the world can read it but can't modify it, do I set its permissions to rwxr-xr-x? If I set it to rwxr--r--, would that mean the file couldn't be served? I mean, what does the x setting do on a .html file, how can a .html file be executable?

2. If file permissions work on the lines of owner-group-others, in the context of a website, who is 'group'? As far as I can tell, there's only the owner, which is me, and others, which is the world accessing the site. Am I correct in thinking that by default, say when creating a website on a shared hosting server, there is no group unless I specifically set one up?

3. My ISP allows the DynDNS.org service, meaning that I could serve a website from my home. It's too early to go that route just yet, but for future reference, I would like to ask about the server software called Hiawatha. It is said to be secure, but having read some evaluations of it, it doesn't seem to offer anything that couldn't be accomplished with Apache or Cherokee, it's just that its security settings are simpler and easier to configure. Am I right about this? Or does Hiawatha truly offer something that the other major server packages don't?
