I am new to fedora. I have searched quite a bit at this site but cannot find an answer: what is the default file system in fedora 13? (I am guessing ext4). Is there a setting that can be set when we are installing, to use another file system? Thanks.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a major raid event recently which caused my Ubuntu 9.04 server to recover part of its file journal on the system partition. This caused some of the file permissions to go all funny and I now need to change them manually.
What the file permissions should for the following folders:
/etc/
/home/
/lost+found/
/mnt/
/root/
/sbin/
/srv/
/tmp/
The server is running and I fixed the some of the ownership issues already. I use a basic LAMP setup with samba, and proftp.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHave 2 FC 14 servers. On both of them set system default language to German (de_DE), reboot, and all is as expected -- all menus and messages in German. Then changed system default back to English, reboot, both are back in English. Then changed system default to Korean (ko_KR), reboot. One server comes up in Korean as expected, but the other comes up in English.
/etc/sysconfig/i18n is ko_KR.utf8 as expected. SSH terminal and execute 'locale' and all variables set to 'ko_KR.UTF8' as expected. Start a GNOME session (thru VNC), open a terminal and 'locale' shows 'ko_KO.UTF8'. Changed default language back to German, reboot, everything comes up in German. Change it to Korean, reboot, and we're back to English (not even German). (Note: LANG=en_US is set as kernel boot option, do that's probably why not German here.) Have trolled through DMESG and /var/log/messages but do not see any error message.Tried 'yum groupremove "Korean Support"' to clear everything out, then re-installed it. Still the same result.
Is there any way to have Fedora use gmail as the default system email instead of thunderbird or evolution?

It's just like taking an x-ray picture by passing all the other objects/elements/running programs on top of the desktop wallpaper. Any ideas? I am using Fedora 14 64 bit. The screen capture software were working fine, though.

View 5 Replies View RelatedHow do I change the default file associations in F15/gnome 3? My system is currently set to open .tex files with emacs. But I prefer TeXworks, and while TeXworks shows up in the "Open With" menu, it would be convenient if double-clicking on a tex file opened it in TeXworks. In gnome2, the "Open with-->Other application" option let me select the default program associated with a particular type of file, but this functionality seems to be gone in Gnome 3. Do I have to edit some config file?

Unfortunately, I have a minor issue that I haven't yet figured out how to fix: I can't change the default applications or the file type associations. For instance, I'd like to set Chromium as my default browser. When I first login, I tell it to set itself as default. But after I end my session and log back it, Firefox is back to being the default browser.
I have the same issues when trying to change what applications open filetypes. .rtf files have been opening in Wordpad in Wine. When I try to change it to Writer through the "Open with" dialog, it retains the change for that session but resets after I log out. I actually ended up having to uninstall Calibre because it was opening .odt files instead of LibreOffice and I couldn't change it permanently.
I am trying to change the default open with application of a .mpg file but when I click on properties it shows me this.. how can I fix it.

I recently decided to install xfce-desktop as a fallback alternative whenever Gnome 3 has problems. Now I have the Thunar file manager opening up by default even when logged into Gnome (for example when using Alt-F2 and typing in a folder name, or when plugging in an iPod.) I've searched around for days but can't find any place to set a default file manager. The Default Applications dialogue doesn't include file manager, only web browser, video etc.)

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
All my torrents go to my home/username/Download/ folder, I could read/write yesterday but now I cant even copy the files to a flash drive.The error i get is "Cannot create regular file '/home/username/Download/file' : Read only file system.

Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).
My Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 with 6x partitions (/, /boot,/home, /usr, /var, /tmp) of 6.0 GB IDE Hardisk was working quite fine. I decided to create LVM on /home and /var partitions but due to some errors occured and I delete the /home partitions. That's why partition table altered. Have just assembled a new computer and thought I would install the 64 bit version of openSUSE 11.2 in a "Windows free zone". After a hiccup or two I have managed to get a system of sorts running but on trying to copy files from my old computer(via a memory stick) it tells me that Vfat is an unknown file system.On my old computer I am running 32 bit openSUSE 11.2 as a dual boot system with Windows XP and have no problems moving files between the two different file systems.Is it possible to get a 64 bit file system to read 32 bit file system drives and if so how do I do it?

Otherwise, data could be changing and inconsistent or, at best, there may be open inodes, and the copied file system would need to be recovered the first time it is mounted. However, is it sufficient if the file system is mounted read-only? Or does a file opened with read-only still result in an open inode?

I have a script that is tar'ing a directory for backup purposes. I am wondering what the best practices are in Linux for where to move the tar file to.I read the 'Linux File System Hierarchy' pdf, but I didn't find any clear direction on where I should write the tar file to in the local file system.Is it taboo to create a /backups folder because some other location is where best practices say to write a tar file that is being kept for backup purposes?
I am writing the files to the local file system, but then backing the entire server up to tape. So I know that I need to keep the backups on a long term media incase the server goes belly up. Again, I'm just looking for best practices for where to write the back to the local file system for local retention.
while organizing my HD (windows) i ran across a file that i couldnt open. i check the file type, and the only thing it said was 'file'..so i made it an image and mounted it on my linux VM (cant seem to find, or mount the host OS HD) ..but i dont know the command to find out what's the file system type so i can read whats in it (i'm thinking its a registry bac-up from windows? but it's like 4g's..the modification date is from 2008..so i'm curious to find out what i saved)

View 4 Replies View Relatedwell i was messing with the Gparted live disk and i deleted a small partition of about 6 megs (yes megs). trying to be efficient doing some cleanup of course. but when i rebooted my Fedora 10 i get the black screen saying," could not find the file system. /dev/root". ok, i am useing the fedora 10 live cd now. can i copy that file to my hard drive from the cd? or do i need to reinstall Fedora?
