Ubuntu :: Cannot Find Window Selector In Unity

May 1, 2011

I've upgraded to 11.04 and found out unity has no desktop window selector at all. After a quick google search it turned out that clicking the Ubuntu icon on the top left corner should bring out some kind of expo-like style selector but that turned out not to be the case for me.

This is all that happens when I click the icon:
Doesn't matter how many windows are open.
Is this some upgrade related error or am I missing something?

Ubuntu :: Use A Left Panel To Show Window Selector?

Jul 20, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 and I use a left panel to show window selector.

I have the problem that Window Selector continuously change the window list from one column to two columns of windows icons.

It is so impossible to click on a window icon to select it.

I've tried to set the size to larger and different sizes. I've tried to show or hide the panel. I've tried to group or ungroup windows.

Is there a way to tell windows selector to stay in one column windows list?

Ubuntu :: When Use Alt-Tab To Switch Tasks The App Selector Window Will Not Appear Unless Moving The Cursor?

If I have Dolphin up and running, I will activate a folder, hit Enter, and nothing happens unless my mouse is moving around the screen.I may have Chromium Browser or Firefox running with another app, and when I use Alt-Tab to switch tasks, the app selector window will not appear unless I'm moving the cursor. And once I have chosen the app to switch to, it will not actually make the switch unless the cursor is in motion across the screen.I am running Kubuntu 10.04, KDE 4.4.2

Ubuntu :: Unity 2D - Three (3) Clicks To Pick Window?

May 1, 2011

I am using Unity 2D in a dated fujitsu sieamens laptop. I appreciate the speed and the responsiveness, but seriously... three clicks to pick a window? When you have 2 windows from the same app in different workspaces: When you have more than a window from a single application open in Unity 3D, you click on the app's icon in the launcher, and it will "scale" all the windows from the same app for you to choose. 2 clicks...

In 2D, click on the launcher, launches expo, showing all the windows, you choose the workspace containing the window you wanna go to, it zooms a little but (useless) sin the content of the windows is does not get rendered, then you click again and you are finally in your window... really..when you need to move through windows quickly this get painful. My suggestion is to remove the zooming "preview" part since it does not render the content of the windows, making itself useless.

Ubuntu :: Unity - Loss Of Menus On Each Window

May 4, 2011

I use a large monitor and often have 2-3 apps open. My biggest complaint about Unity is the loss of menus on each window. Switching apps and choosing menus causes lots of extra motion and requires more concentration. This is not exactly a killer but is a nuisance. Is there an option to keep the menus with the windows? I notice that if an app is started with sudo (e.g. $ sudo nautilus) then the menus stay with the window. Is there a way to make all apps behave this way? If not, why not add this?

Ubuntu :: Can't Run Unity With A Window Manager / Solution For This?

May 15, 2011

I've managed to completely ruin my system for like the millionth time.

Basically my story is this. I cannot seem to run both unity and a window manager/decorator at the same time. Perhaps it is partially because I am not entirely sure what the current window manager is these days.

I thought it was metacity since that has been the default in the past. I ran a code...

I would really like to be able to move windows. I am typing this from my web browser which is permanently stuck in the position it launched in on my screen.

Ubuntu :: Unity: Maximized Window Not In Focus?

Aug 5, 2011

Using Natty 11.04. Often when maximizing an application from the launcher or opening them from the indicator area the application will have focus but will be behind the application I had open before. So if I would then close the window I see I actually close the application I had just opened as the menu area is for the new application.Example.

I am browsing using Firefox. I open X-Chat from the indicator area. I still see Firefox. I decide to close Firefox (or minimize) to get to X-Chat. All I end up in doing is closing (or minimizing) X-Chat because it had focus, the menu at the top was for X-Chat and not Firefox. This has had me launch and close many applications in error. The annoyance factor for this is ten.(Searched the forum but not being sure what the best search words for this issue would be I didn't find anything relevant)

Ubuntu :: Unity Switch - Window Not Responds Until Resized

May 31, 2011

I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity. I have a recurring and irritating problem- sometimes when I switch windows using alt+tab, normally when the window that I have switched to is maximised, the window does not get re-painted until it has been resized. The window doesn't "freeze" as such as it still responds to keyboard and mouse events, but it doesn't appear to respond until it is resized.

Ubuntu :: Why Window Titles Hiding Under Unity Panel

Jun 12, 2011

While I think Unity has its many ups and downs, I found it usable enough to choose it as my default desktop, after some customization. Somewhere in tweaking the desktop with ccsm - or elsewhere - I did something boneheaded. Now when a new window opens at the top of the screen, its title bar is hidden under the Unity panel. I could just wipe everything out and start over, but I kinda like the way things work on my desktop - with this exception. Where I might look to figure out what is letting windows be placed all the way up under the panel.

I did try creating a new account and looking at ccsm config export and comparing it to mine, but did not see anything useful. The only thing I changed with respect to window placement/handling, AFAIK, is disabling maximization at the top of the screen (in 'Grid' module); restoring that did not help. The problem turns out to be caused by using a window type 'panel' in my conky config. Changing the window type to 'desktop' cured the problem. Did not dive any deeper to analyse exactly what conky 'panel' windows do to interfere with Compiz/Unity.

Ubuntu :: Can't Find Application In Unity

May 10, 2011

I just updated to 11.04 today after deciding I couldn't just read about Unity anymore and wanted to experience it for myself. I'll save my thoughts for the Experiences forum; suffice to say that so far I think that it's organized and, for the most part, intuitive.

That said, I am having a problem finding an application that I know is installed. I use Crossover Games to run Steam, and though Steam is running just fine (just played a quick game of TF2 to make sure) I cannot for the life of me find Crossover. In 10.10, it was under Applications > Games. In Unity, it will not show up no matter how I search for it (Steam, however, does with no issues). I have searched for Crossover, codeweaver, cross, code, games, etc, to no avail.

Any tips or comments on how I may find this application? It shows up in my Installed Software in Software Center even!

After reading a few other threads on the matter, I suspect the problem is with the 'nvidia-current' package more than the libgl1-mesa-glx or unity packages. ... though it does seem odd that Unity doesn't have a non-OpenGL verison.

If I find a solution, I'll come back. I hope the answer isn't "ditch nvidia-current for the binary install script from nVidia direct." If someone found this thread in a search, the nVidia driver install scripts can be found at [URL]

Debian Hardware :: DacMagicXS 2.0 - CA Clock Selector?

I have had my USB DAC, the aforementioned, working before in Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint 17.1 and Linux Mint 17.2. I've finally settled on Debian with i3wm as I feel I am now at a stage with Linux where I'm comfortable enough to use it.

It may be something to do with audio output being handled by Pulse, but this was the case in *buntu as well, as I used the Pulse config file to up the maximum bitrate output to take full advantage of the DAC.

On Debian (Stretch), I'm getting this when I select the device in AlsaMixer:

As can see, it is operating in USB 2.0 mode, which is correct.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Install On Separate HDDs / No Boot Selector

Oct 25, 2010

I'm 'trying' to dual boot WinXP and Ubuntu 10.10 from 2 separate HDD's. Currently I'm on attempt number 6 but my patience wore thin about 2 days ago - here's the current state of play: I have WinXP running fine (Was installed first) and I have Ubuntu running fine if I use a boot loader disc. I don't have any boot options at all - if I let the PC boot naturally then it just loads XP as normal. I followed this guide to the letter: [URL]

(For those that don't want to read the link: It get's you to create 4 partitions on a drive - 1: ntfs for winxp (not touched) 2: Linux partition 3: linux-swap partition 4: fat32 osshare partition) then if you get no boot options, it creates an ubuntu.bin file which you move to the C: and edit the boot.ini to include it in the options). But all the difference it makes is I get boot options, I press Ubuntu and my computer sits with a blinking cursor for as long as you let it.

General :: Control The Segment Selector Assigned To A Section?

May 30, 2010

I see from dumping executables that seg selector 0x10 is assigned to my stack segment and to my data segments (.bss .data COMMON). The code is using 0x08. My question - how can I control this? I've looked at all the command line options and don't see it. I have a different program that uses 0x10 for code and 0x18 for data. I note that the second program has i386 in the architecture field in the linker script, whereas the first one referenced has i686. Is this what causes the difference? I understand that this architecture field triggers something regarding a library named BFD - is this where I should look? If so, where do I find it? I am runnig fedora. Is there a way to control the association of sections in the linker script with segment registers? I can set up segments in the gdt and can asign them to segment registers. I can - when writing in assembler - assign code to a section. I can relate a segment in the gdt with a register. But I dont see how to tell the section which segment register it is associated with Finally I see that the gcc compiler decides - based on how I initialize a variable - whether to put it into bss or data or COMMON. Do I have any control over this?
