Ubuntu :: Uninstall A Broken Firefox 3.6.9 Install?
Aug 20, 2010
How can I either fix or uninstall a broken Firefox 3.6.9 install. The install gets all the way through until it syops at "setting up firefox: Setting up firefox (3.6.9~hg20100817r34537+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd2~lucid) ... then it stops forever and now I can't find or install any updates at all. It tells me to fix by running: sudo dpkg --configure -a and around and around we go!
I cannot uninstall Firefox, nor can I uninstall Chromium; one always stays if the other is uninstalled. For example, if I remove Firefox, Chromium will appear in its place and vice versa. This has got to be one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen on Ubuntu! So, how can I uninstall both web browsers?
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 In Ubuntu Software Center I tried to remove Document Viewer. I then tried to install PDF Editor Neither worked and I got the below message The Package system is broken Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems. Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -f I tried to run apt-get install -f and got this message
david@leibnitz:~$ apt-get install -f E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root? david@leibnitz:~$
I switched to root and got this
david@leibnitz:~$ apt-get install -f E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root? david@leibnitz:~$ root
.....
At some point while trying install/uninstall I got a message that said to check the broken filter to see which file is broken. At present, I cannot install/uninstall programs. I do not know how to access the broken filter. And I cannot run apt-get install -f
i am Ubuntu rookie i installed the following package onboard (Simple On-screen Keyboard with macros and easy layout creation) when i try to uninstall it using Synaptic Package manger i get the following error.dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 26430:invalid package name (character `|' not allowed (only letters, digits and characters `-+._'))and when i try to configure it get the same error any help msi@msi-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 26430: invalid package name (character `|' not allowed (only letters, digits and characters `-+._'))using Ubuntu 10.4
I recently installed ndiswrapper and decided to remove it after some kernel panics. The problem is that it overwrote something because I have the compat-wireless-backport driver installed but 'wlan0' doesn't show up anymore. I can see my wireless card when I type 'lsusb'. Any ideas on how to fix?
I just installed a new driver from the Realtek site for my wireless chip, and it broke my system. Ubuntu won't boot in normal mode or recovery mode, and I'm sincerely hoping beyond all hope that I can avoid reinstalling the system I just got working yesterday.
At my connection speed, it will take about two days to download all of the packages I use. Is there any way to get rid of this driver and restore my system back to how it was... about twenty minutes before I posted this, without booting in the system?
I prefer chrome and now want to delete FF all together, under U software center there is no menu to delete FF. Is there another way to this without messing up?
I see Evolution on the menu that is installed by default. I don't use and want to delete, but only choice in the U software center is to "install". I sense this maybe a bug, is there a manual way without messing up?
I tried building Firefox for S&Gs following these instructions

Now I have multiple versions of Firefox all over my system. I just want to revert to the 3.6.6 in the Repositories, but whenever I try to launch "Firefox" from a terminal, I get one of my build versions instead. I've tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, and Synaptic says I have the right version installed, but I can't launch that version. Instead I get a build version. How can I remove all these builds and just start over?
I installed Firefox 4.0 beta on Ubuntu and it made Firefox into Namoroka. Now I want to revert back to the stable Firefox but I am unable to do it. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but none of this works.
Upgraded from Karmic to Lucid today (called myself giving someone else an opportunity to find the bugs). anyway... Firefox 3.63 opens pinned to the upper left of the screen in restored configuration. The window will not maximize. There is no title bar. There is no close/maximize/minimize button bar. Additionally Evolution window can be moved, but will not resize/maximize. There is no title bar/close/maximize/minimize buttons on Evolution
When I browse the Internet using Firefox, I often use the keyboard to scroll because it is quicker than using the mouse. Page-Up and Page-Down are useful; Home and End are especially useful to let me move instantly to the top or bottom of a long page.
However, for the past few days, these keys have not worked correctly.
When I press those keys, either nothing happens or the screen briefly flashes but stays where it is. On some pages, they also create a large vertical black bar that slowly flashes on the page.
I have started Firefox in Safe Mode and it does the same thing (see the screen-shot). So, it's not an add-on creating the problem.
Interestingly, the keys still work properly in Chromium.
How I can fix this Firefox problem?
My system: Ubuntu Lucid 10.04, 64-bit, with all updates Firefox 3.6.16
I have just upgraded to 9.10 and now my internet wont work. I am not very technical and need help please Firefox opens but the screen remains blank and firefox claims "done"
I just upgraded to 10.04 RC 64bit and cannot start firefox anymore but get the following message back
Quote: LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /home/abc/.mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so [/home/abc/.mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32] LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nphelix.so [/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nphelix.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32] Attempting to load the system libmoon Segmentation fault
if i rename my .mozilla folder and start a new profil, firefox will start but crash if you click on a flash video or whatever. moreover I relly need my profile, stored passwords, bookmarks. this is probably a crazy flash problem again but please do not redirect me to ... this is a bug in 10.04 as it worked in 9.10 before and I would feel very uncomfortable to install some unmaintained random files the very first day I use a LTS version .
any ideas how to get firefox working (even without flash as flash works in opera without problems).(and no, I will not create a bugreport in the launchpad; there are already sooo many about flash and flash64 adding just a new one will not help anybody and i am just trying to get firefox started)
I've spent the better part of a day off working on this. I can't pinpoint the problem, either.I've removed *every* flash package in synaptic and installed:
I've rebooted, removed, purged, installed, reinstalled. rebooted. rebooted.I've tried flash-aid.If I remove ALL flash,..... correctly says the plugin isn't installed. If I install adobe-flahplugin, I get a black box where the video should be.The only thing that worked is installing Google Chrome...where flash worked on the first freaking run. But I'm really partial to firefox and this is kind of really POing me.What I would like to know is if Firefox 3.6.6 and Flash 10.1 r53 WORK FOR ANYONE or if I'm just wasting my time???
Firefox in openSUSE has a customized openSUSE toolbar menu. The hyperlink to openSUSE documentation is broken (HTTP 404). Please remove it; it is sufficient to visit the home page and to access the documentation from there.
i have recently been having random problems with mostly firefox. the 2 most annoying problems (that work in other browsers) were: no sound on various sites, like videos and amazon mp3 previews. the mailto command would not work.
the fix is 2 part: i installed the standard release of thunderbird 3.1.1 and the firefox mailto problem is fixed. i installed the standard release of firefox 3.6.7 and sound now works fine.
additionally i have removed thunderbird, firefox and related ubuntu brandng from the package manager for the following reasons:above fixes, time and frustration involved in debug.eliminates the chronic application directory rename during updates, /usr/lib/... and softlink change in /usr/bin.allows me to keep up with t'bird and firefox security patches as they are released, i.e. immmediately.

First off, I have been having disk error problems with Ubuntu, and I think that a file that involves the bookmarks was corrupted. I did remove and reinstall the latest firefox package with Synaptic and apt-get (they do the same thing right?) But I still have this problem: I can not add or modify my bookmarks in the toolbar. I can go to the window to organize my bookmarks but its like nothing is there on the left main view box or the right that shows the bookmarks. If I try to import or restore, it does nothing.
a few days ago, i lost the ability to play videos videos. googlin did no bring any useful solutions. i am using firefox 5 on fedora 15. nspluginwraper (both 32 and 64 bits) is installed. the system is running all the latest updates. flash plugin is working properly, displaying videos on other sites.
I have Firefox 3.6.13. I cannot manually rearrange bookmarks. The help file says to open the bookmarks in the sidebar and manually drag entries to the desired position. They do not drag. In times past, clicking on bookmarks/manage bookmarks opened a window where one could drag entries to desired locations. That no longer works as well. Short of editing the html file directly with emacs, how do I rearrange my bookmarks?
bouncing icon and spinning icon in toolbar for 10-20 seconds, then nothing. Is there a special log file to be found for mozilla errors? (couldn't find anything useful in or near /var/log/messages or warnings all dependencies of associated programmes seem to fulfil dependencies, but obviously something isn't right. Does anyone else have the same problem?
Viewing any source on the Web results in partial loading of data followed by broken up multiple lines. It is occurring now with this post. Paging down I get three lines of "submit new thread" until at the bottom are multiple lines (no characters) after "forum rules". I put it to my network provider who cannot come up with any idea of what may cause it. It cannot be the hardware as the same condition exists on two PC's. Both are on 11.2.
Ok, so I tried to run the .deb package to install the Facebook chat plugin for Pidgin, and something got all messed up with that, and now nothing will install or uninstall. Synaptics won't run, Update Manager tells me to try a termianl command that doesn't work, and the Software center doesn't work either. I've attached screenshots of the problems. I've tried to download and reinstall the .deb file, and it still doesn't work.
I wanted to upload one more picture, but it only allows five. The last picture was of the terminal window. Here's what it said.
"Sudo apt-get install f reading package lists... done building dependency tree reading state information... done E: The package pidgin-facebookchat needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it"
Im new to ubuntu so i may not understand some answers so please bare with me. For a university thing i needed to run java so i installed sun java 6.0. I got an error half way though so i thought nothing of it and went off to do other things. Now when i try and install or uninstall anything i get this message
The package system is broken If you are using third party repositories then disable them, since they are a common source of problems. Now run the following command in a terminal: apt-get install -f
My problem started with DVDrip and I mad an apt-on-cd DVD and installed from there rather than download the packages for my twop systems running karmic. I don't know what has happened but now if I try to install/upgrade/remove anything i get the following.
Code: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libevent-execflow-perl: Depends: libanyevent-perl but it is not going to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
I was trying out things, many different scenarios, many uninstalls, and yestarday just ran janitor ? now I don't have panels, some buttons missing, but many are still here (but unistalled earlier). I would like to make a cleanup in applications/ the button graphics are "blanks" but their name is still there, and who know what else might be conflicting in the background. any useful commands for check-and-clean-and-or-restore?
