Im using a Fujitsu esprimo v6535 intel celeron 2.2 with 3 gbramI am trying to remove ubuntu from my vista ultimate machine, I have put the vista disk in and followed instrutions to command and input bootrec.exe then FixMbr, After typing /fixbmbr I get a message saying '/FixMbr' is not recognized as an internal or external command,operable programme or batch file.I have had a look in the disk managment and looked at partions, there is only one there so cant delete the partion with ubuntu on.

Need to remove Ubuntu from my HP desktop with Vista, I had downloaded 11.04 to run side by side, it had reset my monitor settings which disabled my monitor, then I downloaded 10.10 to replace it, now I cannot get into safe mode or get Vista to come up unless I use the 10.10 install disk to bring my system up. Without the 10.10 install disk the system boots into Ubuntu without giving me a choice. If it wasn't for all the documents and records on Vista I wouldn't care, but as it is I need to somehow delete Ubuntu and get Vista working again.

My brother bought an Acer Laptop which was configured with Ubuntu Dual boot using Grub with Vista Home Premium. He asked me re remove Ubuntu which I thought I could do by simply using the recovery disk to restore the Laptop to the factory condition. This didn't work and I now find that Vista will not boot at all, although Ubunto does. How to remove Ubuntu and put this back to Vista only? I have never used Ubuntu before so in this field I am a complete novice.

I've just came across something rather strange. I've been having a problem with GRUB 2 and Windows as highlighted in this thread:[URL].. Often when I attempt to access my Windows partition from GRUB I will get the Windows failed to start error, but today I may have found something rather interesting that may help me solve my problem. Sorry if it looks like im double posting, but im asking something different.
Basically when Windows fails to boot it restarts and when I attempt to boot it again I usually get the Windows failed to start screen with the option to run Startup and Repair when I ran it earlier, I suddenly saw the Windows Vista Loading bar, which is rather impossible as im running Windows 7. But my laptop came pre-loaded with Windows Vista as well as a recovery partition with Windows Vista on it. I thought I'd removed them both completely but now seeing the Windows Vista Loading screen says otherwise. It looks like some part of the Vista loader remains and well could be the cause of my boot issues. So im wondering how can I go about fully removing the Windows Vista Boot loader?

I installed the live CD version of fedora (dual boot with vista) on my laptop. After I connected to the internet the updates downloaded and all went well. however when i restarted at the boot screen I found two instances of fedora such as
Fedora(2.6.27.9-159.fc10.i686)
Fedora(2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686)
Other
The "other" is vista. I am wondering if this is OK or whether I have two fedora. If so i would like to remove one of them to save disk space.

I've recently installed Xubuntu and now struggling to get my vista pc and laptop to connect to each other. I can ping my laptop from my vista pc. From my laptop I can run Gigolo and see my shared folders on my vista pc, when I try to connect I get the following error...
Failed to open "smb://main/downloads/".
The URI "smb://main/downloads/" is invalid
On my vista pc I can see my laptop and connect to it, however the only thing I can see shared are the printers folder. I have managed to connect to my printer (shared via my network router) and can print from this ok.

I have only just discovered Linux Ubuntu and it's a breath of fresh air compared to Vista. I installed Ubuntu using the Wubi Windows installer and now that i have both OS's available i would like to remove Vista altogether.Is it easier to completely remove Ubuntu and then reinstall it again over Vista, or would it be easier to remove Vista while keeping Ubuntu installed?I am completely new to Ubuntu and Linux so inserting code to remove the Vista partion seems a bit daunting so if there is a nice GUI way to remove Vista and only have Ubuntu as my OS, that would be my prefferred option.

I am running a dual-boot system (Windows Vista and Ubuntu) and after I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 I am unable to boot up Windows Vista.
How can I fix this? Grub is probably where the problem is; but my Windows partition of my hard drive is found and I can boot from it.

i've tried making the switch before, but always end up running into some trouble that has me going back to windows. i recently installed ubuntu 10.10 and everything has been going fairly smooth, i've been using it for a few weeks with no complaints. no complaints, that is, until i try to upload files... my digicam shoots movies in avi format. i have no problem uploading these files to videos from vista, it works as it should. i cannot upload anything to videos from ubuntu. whatever i try to upload fails instantly.
i also cannot upload photos to photobucket, with the same outcome. the transfer appears to start, but fails immediately afterwards. the photobucket problem has me really intrigued, since it will upload some files directly from the hard drive, but most pics on the hard drive will still fail to upload, and all files on my sd card straight out of the camera fail to upload regardless, even though the computer reads the card and the files fine locally.

after I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and my computer restarted, I couldn't find a way for it to boot Ubuntu, but it automatically went to Vista. When I press 'esc' to enter the boot order, it only give me the option of CD drive or Hard drive. I tried force installing GRUB2 from a live CD, but to no effect.

I'm having some problems with sharing my printer via SAMBA. Connected to my Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop is a HP office-jet D135 witch I shared via samba. I have no problems printing from my Ubuntu laptop. And in Vista I can see and access all the other shares, including the printer. But ones i try to access the printer I get a pop-up window telling me: "unable tot connect to printer error code 0x00000709 check if the name is correct or if the printer is connected to the network" ( but of course in Dutch). I just installed the Fedora12 on my laptop, on which originally thereas only one partition with Vista before. I resized the Vista partition and made a free space and installed Linux on it.Fedora works fine, but when I try to boot Vista, it opens the system recovery options menu, without being able to do anything. After the end of each option it boots again, giving the two options between Linux and "other" and if I choose "other" it goes back to the recovery menu.

I have noticed that I am not the first one to have problems with samba and connecting to a Windows PC. I have read so many articles and I have tried a couple of things that seemed to make sense, but no luck.
I can connect from my Vista to my Ubuntu netbook remix, but not the other way around. I get the error message: "Unable to mount location", "failed to mount windows share" and I get "mount error 12 = Cannot allocate memory" in Smb4K.
There was a suggestion that "mount error 12 = Cannot allocate memory" indicated it was a problem originating in Vista, but the added registry values on my Vista PC that was suggested didn't change anything. I have also read and [URL] and implemented 3.1 and 3.2 but it made no difference either.

i usually use my pendrive in windows vista but when today i tried to open it in ubuntu 9.10 it does not show up. i know that it is mounted because i could see it in the "USB START UP DISC CREATOR" (IN SYSTEM->ADMINISTRATION->USB START UP DISC CREATOR) [See the screen shot. ]. i think since i had never tried to open my Pen drive in ubuntu before and always open it in win vista, that's why this problem is coming up.

I run Lucid on ext3. I really miss not being able to reach Lucid from my dual boot Vista.I have installed the latest fsdriver. I have also tried this:[URL].. which does not work. (Is it because fsdriver is still in the system?) I also tried these methods but to no avail.[URL]. The problem seems to be related to fsdriver not being able to handle ext3 with Inode size = 256. Going back to ext2 for only the home partition seems complicated?

this might deviate from "installation" theme.. I'm writing an immediate problem since the last thread: [URL] problem is the vista partition is impossible to shrink now, though there's 50 G free space. Every try found in : [URL] does not work including Perfect disk degrag. I think this is because fedora system is there. some code is written to vista partition..that vista cannot handle.....

I just installed FEDORA 14 on my PC which already had Vista. I am able to dual boot through the GRUB boot loader. I am facing an issue where wired network in FEDORA stops working if I hibernate Vista. I really would like to be able to hibernate both to quicken the startup times.
Here are the steps:
1. Boot to Fedora (everything works fine including wired network)
2. Hibernate Fedora
3. Boot to Vista (everything works fine including networking)
4. Hibernate Vista
5. Boot to Fedora. It loads up fine, but wired network status icon keeps spinning and then results in a kernel package crash. I already reported the crash to Fedora.
6. Hibernate Fedora and boot to Vista (Vista resumes fine from hibernation and everything works in Vista including networking).
Is Fedora supposed to work when both Fedora and Vista are hibernated in a dual boot PC?If I shut down Vista, and then resume Fedora, networking works fine. So there is something in Vista hibernation that causes Fedora networking to fail. This issue remains even if Fedora is restarted (not hibernate/resume).

I can't be the first one with this problem. What am I missing?
I have setup Samba servers in the past, just none under SELinux. The last one I configured was a couple years ago, so I wouldn't doubt I'm a bit rusty.

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.
I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

For a reason I cannot remember, some months ago I installed Rhythmbox 10.0.6 as an upgrade to the standard version in Karmic ( I think it was in an attempt to get Ipod working).Now that I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS with Rhythmbox 10.0.8 installed, I have a problem that when I try to start Rhythmbox, the old (unwanted) version starts, even though I have checked and the later version is installed.I am unable to find a way to remove 10.0.6 as in the terminal when I use commandremove --purge rhythmbox-0.12.6the message I get is "Couldn't find package rhythmbox-0.12.6" but I know it's there as the folder is in filesystem/usr/local/src/rhythmbox-0.12.6Can anybody suggest a way I can remove this old, unwanted version soI can use the new version with all its lovely benefits?

some Hours ago I was running my PC in UBUNTU 11.04 when suddenly power failure occurred and my pc just switch off without proper shutdown (My power backup device was not working)... just B4 The power failure i was downloading wine software... but now when i again starts my PC i figured out that there's some problem with that so i think that i should remove and reinstall it. but now I'm unable to uninstall it..

I'm traying to remove several program, sucha as transmission, bunshee and other, I can't unistall them from the console by typing sudo apt-get remove ***, neither trhough synaptic, neither thru ubuntu softare center... each time I try to unistall I got the message that its being unistall but after it I open the softare just if like its properly installed.

I'm unable to change startup programs. If I try and add or remove a program, any changes I have made seem to undo themselves. I suspect it might have something to do with being unable to save the session, but I really don't have a clue.
Just in case it makes a difference: I'm actually running Mint (Helena).
