while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. I am new to fedora and installed wine to see if I could get the sony reader software working (required to access sony bookstore from my sony ereader). Well the program did not work though it did create icons on my desktop. wine kept crashing and I said lets just get rid of it. I uninstalled wine via yum remove and nothing appeared to happen so I did rpm -qa |grep wine and saw lots of stuff. So I simply did yum remove wine* and then a rpm -qa |grep wine was empty. however wine is still under applications on my desktop and still has a category for programs--reader. I should also mention that while wine was installed I attempted to remove the reader via the wine uninstalller but a) wine gave a message of a core crash and b) all the uninstaller did was give me the option to reinstall the reader program. so now when I attempt to open an epub it tries with the sony reader software. I know I can just right click to use another program but for now I want wine gone completely from my pc and the sony program gone.

I want to completly remove wine, so i figured that using the package manager, and apt-get remove will make it work. Using apt-get, i get the message that there is no wine installed, even though the package manager is telling me the opposite. After that i removed wine via the package manager, but i can still run wine. And that is the point where i am getting completly lost, how the hack can i run a removed program? I did compile and install wine myself once, so the problem might hide there. But how to i remove a program without the routines of the package manager?
I seriously need to deinstall wine completly to figure out a couple misterious problems i am having lately.

I have no need for libwine-print, nor cups. I noticed this issue while trying to remove cups. It's a box with no printer and will never see one, so I see no need to have it. I know it's not using much space, but I don't want it if I don't need it. Is there a way to remove libwine-print without removing wine?
Code:
Shelly:~# dpkg -P cups cups-bsd cups-client cups-common cups-driver-gutenprint cupsddk cupsddk-drivers

The only MS program I need on my computer is Word 2007 for the equation editor to write/edit files from work. So after installing Wine I installed MSOffice2007. Excel worked OK (although I don't need it - I am perfectly happy with the Libre Office spreadsheet). Word however froze each time so I tried to uninstall and reinstall it. However I always got an error message when trying to uninstall with Wine. So I followed the advice of some strands in this forum and deleted the Program Files folder from the ~.wine directory. However the menus are still in Wine/Programs/Microsoft Office even though they lead to nowhere. I tried to reinstall but still I nothing happened. I presume the old entries still lead to the position where previously the .exe files were located. Now my question is either how can I remove these menu entries and try installing again - or even better - is there a Linux programme that can read/edit the equations written in Word 2007?

I'm trying to use iTunes and poker sites on my acer aspire one with linux linpus lite. I've followed previous threads and learned how to add/remove programs and I've downloaded wine. My wine programs show up under 'other' and I have: wine configuration; wine file; wine boot; wine software ininstaller and winhelp (not sure if the last is wine or not) Just can't navigate my way through any of these to find how to actually RUN wine. Also, if you think this is not the best way to fully use poker websites (I'm not happy with the iphone style no download play) or iTunes.

When I install wine the add/remove program wants to install both 86_64 and i686 files. I have the x86_64 version of Fedora 14. I am having problems with counterstrike and have installed it using Wine, have noted problems when both types of files are installed.
I would like to have Fedora set up just right but as with all Linux distros, am having trouble keeping my head above water with fc14. I have success up to a point and then want to go back to Windows for its simplicity. Just this wine problem

I have an old copy of daemon347.exe.I tried to run it using wine (right clicked on the file and clicked "open with wine"; also tried the "open with wine program loader" option.)After agreeing to the license agreement, I clicked the "Next>" button. But then the setup terminated.I do have an alternative for daemon - the ubuntu mounter. But this happens with quite a few .exe files. Is there a more correct way to operate wine? Either the setup files terminate after a few windows or a few setup files don't run at all.
P.S.: I have Ubuntu 9.10 amd64

So I used Wine to install Safari. First time I run Safari, it crashes. So I 'uninstall' it with Wine, except predictably Safari still opens after the uninstall. How would I go about removing Safari completely from Ubuntu? I can't even find my wine directory.

I've been trying to install uTorrent via wine recently, however the following error message keeps popping up - "It seems uTorrent is already running, but not responding. Please close all uTorrent applications and try again." The only reason I'm trying to install uTorrent is to use the scheduling function, to allow downloads during my off-peak times. Any alternative program which has a scheduling function.

I am unable to print from Wine applications (including Notepad) because Wine thinks I have no printers installed. I have a network printer and print-to-file both working fine in normal KDE applications. I did some looking around and found the following:http://www.witch.westfalen.de/Wine-H...intconfig.html
This is very old, and probably very out of date. I also had trouble following the examples. In any case I don't have anything called winerc or wine.conf. I just have a .wine directory.
Supposedly I should have registry keys for printers in Wine, so I looked where those are supposed to be. I have two keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetContro lPrintPrinters: (Default) and DefaultSpoolDirectory. Perhaps if I added the right key here I could get Wine to notice CUPS? I wouldn't begin to know what to put though.
http://www.winehq.org/docs/wineusr-g...s-to-configure claims that Wine should "just work" with CUPS. So much for that. It also says that if it doesn't work with CUPS it falls back to look in /etc/printcap. I have one of those, but it doesn't contain anything except the default comment telling me not to edit the file. Maybe if there's a way to regenerate /etc/printcap to contain the printers that show up in KDE, Wine would notice. Again, I have no clue how to do that.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 x64, and I'm using Wine 1.2, not Wine 1.0. All my packages are completely up to date.

I installed WINE onto my Ubuntu Lucid v10.04 LTS workstation. Now I want to remove it completely.
When I use Synaptic, it tells me that Wine is not installed. However, when I select Applications from the top panel, Wine appears as the top-most entry and Wine --> Programs has contents.
How do I make Wine EVERYTHING go away?

I'm running opensuse 11.2 since a few days. I installed wine to play some game. Originally I tried with the default version but since it didn't work I have installed a newer version from winehq website (just the same, an rpm package, supposedly for suse). In the mean time had a lot of stuff installed, like winetricks, or wine-doors, and the necessary wine software like directx or microsoft fonts.
After a couple of days the game is not working anymore so I have tried to remove everything and start from scratch. The problem is I can't remove wine. If I remove wine the dependency will say, it will remove package 'wine' and install 'wine-snapshot'. If I uninstall wine-snapshot it installs wine. And so on.
I'd just like to remove everything related so i can check and eventually manually delete rest of wine-related stuff to make sure it's all clean... reinstalling the game didn't help so I figured that wine is broken somehow.

Let me start by saying I'm new to CentOS. But we're getting a server with CentOS soon so I'm experimenting on a virtual machine for the moment. One of the things I'm going to test requires me to have wine installed on the CentOS box. I found that to install wine I need to use the command "yum install wine". When doing this nothing really happens. I get the following output on the screen:
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* base: centos.crazyfrogs.org
* updates: base: centos.crazyfrogs.org
* addons: base: centos.crazyfrogs.org
* extras: base: centos.crazyfrogs.org
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
No package wine available Nothing to do.
I've already issued the "yum upgrade" command but my problem still remains.
Does anybody know of this issue or is there anybody who can help me with this?
