View 2 RepliesI have just over 20GB of empty space on C:. When I click it under disk-management, the window comes up and says I can only resize it 192 MB less than what it is. But I have 20GB free. Any ideas on what is wrong? I also have this odd 9.56GB partition that is empty. DM says it's "EISA configuration"...whatever that is. I am planning to allocate about 10GB for F11 if this pans out ok.

During the Fedora installation i chose to include all three hard drives in the file system. So now sda, sdb and sdc are all included in the lvm group.

Can i follow these steps to shrink the partition on sdc without damaging my current fedora installation? Can i run the commands straight from the shell, or do i need to boot up from a livecd?
Currently I have a four partition setup: One ext4 /boot partition for Fedora, one LVM partition, one ext4 partition (which has Ubuntu), and one swap partition. What I would like to do is shrink down the ext4 partition which has Ubuntu on it and increase the size of my LVM parition (and increase the Volume Group, filesystem, etc. within the LVM). However, I've been searching on Google and the only solutions I find is to make the free/unpartitioned space and then create a new LVM partition and stretch the VG over the two LVM partitions. However, I already have 4 partitions, so I can't make the fifth one.
Is there any possible way I can increase the size of the underlying LVM partition itself?
I installed fedora 10 on my laptop as a partition with vista. However i'm now not able to boot into my vista partition as everytime I try it comes with an error saying "bootmgr" is missing. Below is whats in my grub.conf file. However I am able to access my vista partition through fedora.

To install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, I have to shrink Windows 7 partition C:. But due to some unmovable files, I cannot shrink as much as I plan by using Windows own shrinking tool. I guess many of you who have both OSes on the same hard drive must have similar experience.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI first noticed this behaviour with Fedora 9, so I guess the install process is behaving as intended. However, when I install grub in the linux boot partition, SDA 6 with my current configuration, I would like my Vista partion to remain active. I use EasyBCD in Vista to control booting, as I have more Vista systems than linux systems. Currently, I have to boot the Vista install DVD after every Fedora install to do a start up repair on the hard drive. After the Fedora install, the Vista partition is marked inactive and needs to be marked active again. IMHO, if the linux boot loader is loaded in the linux boot partition, the currently active Windows partition should be left active. Unless I'm missing something, the MBR on the drive is going to be pointed at some other partition than the linux partition whenever grub is installed in the linux boot partition instead of the MBR. It's not that hard to activate the Windows partition, but after installing a few F12 alpha snaps and beta TCs and RCs, it's getting annoying. Any chance this can be changed?

2. Installed Fedora on Free space
Decided to boot back to Windows(to check if it was left intact) , Windows boots into Recovery mode. It can't find the partition !
Fedora boots up fine. When my PC starts, it give me message that I have 3-5 seconds to choose what system to boot. Disk Utility shows that my HD is split into multiple partitions.
Really need to get back my Windows Partition. All my work is on it.
I have a Lenovo thinkpad T400 with Vista x64 that I want to dual-boot with fedora 10. The T400's original config has 3 primary partions:
1) Vista boot partition (some weird partition that it only uses to boot... this is my first time using Vista so I don't know the details, but I think it has to be there and it has to be a separate partition from the "data" partition)
2) Vista data partition
3) Lenovo Rescue and Recovery partition (a separate bootable partition that is used for recovery, backups, ...)
My first attempt was to shrink the recovery partition and add a new extended partition that has the two standard fedora logical volumes and an extra NTFS to be shared between the OS's (I usually use FAT32 for this one, but NTFS support seems to be pretty solid now).
Everything was fine, but I couldn't boot into the rescue partition. According to this site:

You *have* to have a linux boot partition be your primary partition. Other people have told me the same thing and that site has an explanation, but I don't get it =)
So, it seems that I need 5 primaries (3 original vista/lenovo primaries, 1 linux primaray to put the boot stuff into, and 1 extended for everything else) to make this work (which is not possible). Can anyone think of something else I could do (other than getting rid of Vista and the Lenovo stuff and giving them both the finger?) I'm thinking maybe I could make an extended partition and move one or more of the Vista/Lenovo partitions in there, but I'm not sure if they could boot.
Trying to install Ubuntu (any atm) on my father's HP destop. When i install, the partition manager wont allow me to shrink the windows partition to fit ubuntu in, and when i go to gparted to do it manually, it says that there are damaged sectors. is there a way to force ubuntu to install?

View 3 Replies View RelatedTwo days ago I repartitioned my laptop HD and added the latest Ubuntu (2.6.35-25-generic) to the existing Vista and existing Ubuntu (2.6.32-28-generic via upgrades from 9.14(?)). Prior to this install it was using Grub with menu.lst from the old/upgrade Ubuntu. After the install the boot menu labels the partition with Vista as the Windows Recovery partition and the recovery partition item is no longer present.
At first I wondered how I could get Vista to boot. I found that SuperGrub cd would boot it OK. Then, it dawned on me that the boot menu item was not the recovery partition, but instead the Vista OS partition mislabelled . Vista loads just fine from it. The recovery partition is no longer listed as it was with Grub/menu.lst. SuperGrub will not boot the recovery partition, showing an error "missing BOOTMGR".

I edited boot/grub/grub.cfg so the boot menu item is labelled correctly, but suspect that it will revert back when there is an upgrade.
I installed XandROS on my vista machine. I can access the Windows partition from Linux but in Vista I cant see the Linux partition...is there anything I can do about that?

The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I've been givin this task, to make a script that shrinks the /dev/sda1 partition...generally my scripts is working.. it just destroys all data on the sda1 partition when it gets shrinked... i still dont get why =PYou see... i have to shrink the partition sda1 ( with ubuntu 10.04.1 ), but with the installation intact, through a script...I boot via the ubunto live cd, use my script, and my new partition sda3 is created perfectly as ext4.But as i mentioned earliere, data is lost on sda1

know the best way to shrink the Windows 7 64 bit primary partition (C: drive)? The C: drive was originally just over 900 GB free space. Will I be able to boot into Windows after I use G-Parted? Or will I have to use the Repair Disc to fix Windows? If so, will the Repair Disc work. I have a new PC. I had Ubuntu 10.10 dual booted with Windows XP on my old PC.

Now the filesystem is smaller than the partition size. View 4 Replies View RelatedI run Fedora FC13-x64. Recently I added a few TB's of RAID5 storage tto my server and moved most data from the root filesystem to that. Now my root volume is way too big. My basic install resulted in a 1TB LVM volume group entirely dedicated to a single lv_root.
Now I want to make room and eventually clone this disk to a much smaller root disk. I see many threads about reducing the size of an LVM logical volume. My first steps were succesful. I used lvreduce and resize2fs to reduce the size of the logical volume and filesystem. I also user pvreduce to reduce the size of the physical volume group.
But still gparted and fdisk report the physicalk volume (/dev/sde2) as 900GB. The embedded LVM stuff is as small as 60GB. Anyway LVM manager and GParted doe not allow me to shrink /dev/sdf2 to snuggly fit the LVM stuff in it.
After four attempts and diverse partition map problems, I finally managed to install successfully clean versions of both Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Ubuntu Lucid Lynx on my old MacBook Pro C2D (2,1) and a new 320 GB HDD, by following these instructions:[URL]
Now, I've got a big partition for Mac OS X (286 GB) and a small partition for Ubuntu (30 GB, as well as two smaller partitions for grub and swap). However, I'd like to shrink the Mac OS X partition to, say, 35 GB, and use the freed up 251 GB as a shared partition to keep files for access from both OSs. But Mac OS X Disk Utility won't let me resize the Mac OS X partition (and warns that it might not be a smart thing to do, as the disk has been partitioned for Boot Camp, etc).
Is there some way I can resize the partition, or do I have to start all over again?
I installed fedora 12 as second os along with ulimtate vista on 64 bit machine.
I was able finish the install and boot to fedora first time. but after updating the software , i am unable to boot into fedora but am able to boot in to vista.

Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:

As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.
So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).
As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. I've been trying to use GParted Live CD to shrink my Windows XP partition and allocate this space to /home.
On GParted I shrank my /dev/sda1 (Windows) from 36GB to 26 GB. Then I had 10 GB of unallocated space. I didn't know how I could use this unallocated space to increase the size of /dev/sda7 (/home). How do you do this?
I recently installed ubuntu alongside windows 7 on my machine. I ardly know anything about partitions, but I managed to shrink the windows partition to make space, abd then use the ubuntu installer to create the ubuntu partition. But I hadn't realized that there were actually 3 Windows partitions - "Acer C:", "Recovery", and "System, Active, Primary Partition".
So I didn't know that I should have made the ubuntu partition "Extended", which means that I can't make new partitions anymore. Is there anything I can do without reinstalling ubuntu?
