Ubuntu :: Trying To Write Script To Perform Tasks Number Of Times Depending On User Input?
Apr 13, 2011
I'm trying to write a bash script with a for loop that will perform two tasks a number of times depending on the number the user enters at the start. Here is what I got so far. It works fine the first time but then it just exits with no error msgs. The problem is in the way I have written the loop command. I have searched the web for examples to find out what I'm doing wrong with no luck.
#!/bin/bash
declare -i Num=1
declare -i Strnum=8

I often get responses from people who first say: "Are you sure? You want your network to be exposed to the outside world?" I am not experimenting on a Production Server of NASA or any Security Concern Department. Friends, there is no harm in experimenting on your personal computer or on a test computer which is isolated from the production environment. Look at hackers! What do they do? If they don't know how security is breached then how would they come up with security measures?
If my question reads... "How to let any user perform Administrative Tasks on a Linux System irrespective of his/her privileges on that particular system?" then I would not get the right answers in the first place. They will say... "You are letting everyone destroy your system... are you sure you want to do that?" My question is: Why should we restrict ourselves from experimenting even if it sounds weird to other people?
I give you an example where it is desirable to let an unprivileged user perform certain tasks. You want to know if there are any employees in your office who are storing videos in their home directory and filling up the disk space to a great amount. You have a department called "Command Center or Data Center Operations or Help Desk" call it whatever you would, whose work is to monitor such activities, and you create an account "monitor" for them to monitor such activities but they are not able to do them:

If I only want to let a user be able to login via telnet a max number of times equal to 2 how would I go about doing this?I have found this little tid bit:per_source = 2but that only allows 2 connections from the same source (i.e. network) and that would not work. For some reason our telnet sessions are not dying off after a user has shutdown their PC and then the next time they login it adds another telnet session.

2. user1 27539 /dev/pts/539

There must be a way to perform privileged tasks in the Gnome desktop (or actually Nautilus, I guess)...similar to using SUDO in a terminal window.
For example I want to change the rights to a file, but Nautilus tells me I can't because I'm not the owner.

I have a folder named "logs" which contains log files. I would like to have a bash script or a cron job or something like this which will check the folder continuousy and perform some tasks (for example echo "New file is created") every time a new file with pattern like "Screen.log.***" is created in the folder "logs"
Is it possible in Linux?

Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.and therefore i am unable to perform many tasks.this is a clean install of 9.10 on a brand new laptop

I am new to writing shell scripts. So, please bare with me. I am currently trying to write a shell script which will read the directory path as input from user and will traverse the Dir tree to find all available audio and video files. I have tried to write as much as I could but I don't know where I am making mistake as I get some files to be audio file which are actully tar balls. On the second note there are some files which video but script shows them to be audio. And, some video files are completely skipped. I am giving the shell script below so that you can see. I am using two external files as source which I am attaching.

I thought these were the same password?In-fact, they WERE the same password on the set-up I currently have. But now, weirdly, I can log in fine but I the exact same password is not using in order to perform admin tasks.I've tried a recovery mode, console, and then "password (username)" in order to reset the password. This does reset the password I need to use to log in, but the password still does not work for performing admin tasks

configure which dns the system will consult depending on which user iniciated the request. My goal would be, if user "peter" is logged in and has opened the browser, that requests for name solves from that user goes to certain/s dns server/s. And if user "anne" is logged and request name resolution, that request should be done to another dns server. To say it briefly, the idea would be configure selective dns server use depending on system users.

I'm the POC for all my families Linux computers. Is it possible to get statistics on which programs are accessed, how frequently, for how long and by which user?
When it comes time to upgrade it would be useful so I know which programs to concentrate my testing. I usually just e-mail and ask but every time people forget to send me the programs they actually use.

I recently setup a new Linux server running Fedora 10. For some reason all ping response times are rounded to the nearest 10ms. For example, running the simple command "ping yahoo.com" give the following sample results:
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=12 ttl=57 time=60.0 ms
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=13 ttl=56 time=50.0 ms
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=14 ttl=56 time=40.0 ms
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=15 ttl=56 time=50.0 ms
I could post a larger result set but its all the same... every response is rounded to a multiple of 10ms. This wouldn't be a big deal except that the server is running Nagios for monitoring so accurate stats are important. The Nagios check_ping and check_icmp commands are also returning rounded off results. How can I get ping to simply respond with the actual response times rather than a rounded off number?

I'm thinking of a few ways to do this I'm curious how many better/equal ways there are to do the same task.in a file with format like: 20 text Gi0/2 some other junk I have it reformatted to look like this before going in a database: 0/2 20 text. But for whatever reason some of the new input text looks like this now: 20 text Gi1/0/2 some other junk
My script makes it look like this: 1/0/2 20 text. I want it to remove the leading number and slash if the input file is in the new format.

I need to write a script which will get a number from STDIN and then with that number echo a set number of questions (its for a firewall config). Heres what I want the user to receive.
How many ports do you want open? 3
1. specify port: 80
2. specify port: 21
3. specify port: 23
In the background this will echo a command out to a text file which will read as follows:
open port 80
open port 21
open port 23
I've done this before but I've completely forgotten how

So I have been doing some RAID 5 performance testing and am getting some bad write performance when configuring the RAID with an even number of drives. I'm running kernel 2.6.30 with software based RAID 5. This seems rather odd and doesn't make much since to me. For RAID 0 my performance consistently increases as I add more drives, but this is not the case for RAID 5. Does anyone know why I might be seeing lower performance when constructing my RAID 5 with 4 or 6 drives rather than 3 or 5?

I've looked everywhere but I can't find where to change the default box for incoming mail, or am I on the wrong track. It's a nuisance having to change folders and I can't configure wastebin to empty on exit. And I can't get kmail to import from evolution. Do I have to go to the evolution storage and do it manually, and if so, how do I do that?

I have been having a lot of trouble lately with installing from CD/DVD. The DVD reader/writer on this laptop is new. Nevertheless, trying to install Ubuntu onto an exernal HD, I get 'input output error on sr0 logical block (a large number) After a long time the booting proceeds to a point, but I never get the actual installation started, and have to shut down manually.
The CD is fine, says the Ubuntu-checker. I just installed using my sons laptop, and there was no trouble. Question: does this indicate a motherboard failure? A memory block damaged? Do you know of a diagnostic tool I can use to check the reading of a CD/DVD?
