General :: Let A User Be Able To Login Via Telnet A Max Number Of Times Equal To 2?

Jan 25, 2011

If I only want to let a user be able to login via telnet a max number of times equal to 2 how would I go about doing this?I have found this little tid bit:per_source = 2but that only allows 2 connections from the same source (i.e. network) and that would not work. For some reason our telnet sessions are not dying off after a user has shutdown their PC and then the next time they login it adds another telnet session.

1. user1 31300 /dev/pts/409
2. user1 27539 /dev/pts/539
3. user1 18042 /dev/pts/316

Ubuntu :: Trying To Write Script To Perform Tasks Number Of Times Depending On User Input?

Apr 13, 2011

I'm trying to write a bash script with a for loop that will perform two tasks a number of times depending on the number the user enters at the start. Here is what I got so far. It works fine the first time but then it just exits with no error msgs. The problem is in the way I have written the loop command. I have searched the web for examples to find out what I'm doing wrong with no luck.

#!/bin/bash

declare -i Strnum=8

Ubuntu Networking :: SSH / Telnet Connection To Desktop Within LAN Times Out

Dec 16, 2010

Wrong prefix, its Ubuntu not Lubuntu. Three devices:

Laptop 1:
---Can ssh to any device.
---Accepts any internal ssh.

Desktop 1:
---Can ssh to any device.
---Accepts any internal ssh.

Desktop 2:
---Can ssh to any device.
---Can ssh to itself through localhost or 192.168.1.130.
---Any ssh(and telnet) aimed at this device times out.

All three devices recently had openssh-server installed yet only one seems deviant. I've been trying to ssh into desktop 2 to no avail, yes the machine is reachable, yes sshd is running, yes ufw is disabled, and no there is no external firewall that I know of. Anything else I can try? The router for the LAN being dd-wrt.

General :: Disable Telnet And Ssh For A Specific User?

Nov 12, 2010

I am looking for a way to deny telnet and ssh to one specific user. So far I've only tested with telnet and my attempts have been limited to various hosts.deny entries:

in.telnetd : user@server
in.telnetd : user@server.domain.com
in.telnetd : user@IP_address
in.telnetd : user@.domain.com

None of these work. The only thing I've found that does work is:in.telnetd : IP_addressBut this is only a semi-viable solution because we will soon have multiple logins for the one username from different servers and sub-nets. Ideally, I'd like to be able to deny telnet and ssh access to this username regardless of where the login originates. I suppose it would be possible to specify each server IP, but that'll be a bear to maintain

Ubuntu Installation :: Unplanned Visits To Login Window - Taken To Login Screen Three Times

Aug 18, 2010

I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Server :: Get Ping To Simply Respond With The Actual Response Times Rather Than A Rounded Off Number?

Oct 11, 2010

I recently setup a new Linux server running Fedora 10. For some reason all ping response times are rounded to the nearest 10ms. For example, running the simple command "ping yahoo.com" give the following sample results:

64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=12 ttl=57 time=60.0 ms
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=13 ttl=56 time=50.0 ms
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=14 ttl=56 time=40.0 ms
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=15 ttl=56 time=50.0 ms

I could post a larger result set but its all the same... every response is rounded to a multiple of 10ms. This wouldn't be a big deal except that the server is running Nagios for monitoring so accurate stats are important. The Nagios check_ping and check_icmp commands are also returning rounded off results. How can I get ping to simply respond with the actual response times rather than a rounded off number?

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen

Apr 12, 2011

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.

I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

It seems the access denied applies to just a single, standard user account - only via ssh, all other users are able to login... tried also to change the passwd, no difference. beside re-creating the account, can you think about anything else? system: RHEL AS3, 2.4.21-51ELsmp

General :: IF Statement - Not Getting Equal Results From All Cases

Jun 6, 2011

I'm a bit stuck with IF statement. There is the code:
#!/bin/bash
# Variables
VAR1=test
VAR2="echo $VAR1"

# Case 1
echo Case 1
if [ test == test ]; then
echo "equal"
else
echo "not equal"
fi;
echo ""

# Case 2
echo Case 2
if [ "VAR1" == test ]; then
echo "equal"
else
echo "not equal"
fi;
echo ""

# Case 3
echo Case 3
if [ "VAR2" == test ]; then
echo "equal"
else
echo "not equal"
fi;
echo ""

When executed, why case "2" and "3" differs from case "1"? Where am I wrong and how to solve this trouble? (my aim is to get "equal" from all cases).

Ubuntu :: Forum Login Times Out While Composing A Post?

Oct 9, 2010

I've used the forums infrequently, being more of a mailing list kind of guy. But I'm currently tinkering with an old laptop I got as a "gift" which doesn't have an ethernet port, And if I wanted to use my cable modems usb connection to apt-get etc for the installed Ubuntu Lucid, I had to disconnect my router. This pc isn't yet configured with my mail client etc... So I thought I'd try the forum again...I noticed that using: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100423 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.3 Which has not been modified yet (except to add the scroogle search bar) I keep timing out.

IEI logged in to ubuntu forums, found an existing thread related to something I'd like to do with it.clicked on quote, and began composing a followup. When I was ready to preview the thread I got an error that said I wasn't logged in. and suggested I use some included form to try again. The form looked like it wanted my username and password but wouldn't let me enter the required info into the blank fields... I had to simply log in again with the login link at the top of the forum page, and use the back button (alt+leftarrow) several times until my reply was recovered so that I could preview, fix typos & submit..I searched the forum for "forum login timeout" and found one relevant post which appeared to say the only reason it's OP had a problem was do to making changes to his copy of firefox but that it was fixed ([solved]) without saying how he fixed it. There was a reference to using about:config which is beyond my skill level...How does one keep the from login session from timing out while one's browser still has an open window to what was a logged in forum page anyway
