General :: Perform Root Level Tasks While In GUI?

Oct 5, 2010

There must be a way to perform privileged tasks in the Gnome desktop (or actually Nautilus, I guess)...similar to using SUDO in a terminal window.

For example I want to change the rights to a file, but Nautilus tells me I can't because I'm not the owner.

General :: How To Perform Root Level Commands - Fedora - Live Media

I need to use Live Media to make changes to a hard disk drive. I tried to sudo to no effect.

Seems like it would be troublesome to authorize root access on Live Media or have sudo allow commands such as pvcreate, lvcreate, vgcreate, especially if the hard disk is not encrypted.

General :: Security - Let Any User Perform Administrative Tasks On A System Irrespective Of His / Her Privileges On That Particular System?

Sep 26, 2010

I often get responses from people who first say: "Are you sure? You want your network to be exposed to the outside world?" I am not experimenting on a Production Server of NASA or any Security Concern Department. Friends, there is no harm in experimenting on your personal computer or on a test computer which is isolated from the production environment. Look at hackers! What do they do? If they don't know how security is breached then how would they come up with security measures?

If my question reads... "How to let any user perform Administrative Tasks on a Linux System irrespective of his/her privileges on that particular system?" then I would not get the right answers in the first place. They will say... "You are letting everyone destroy your system... are you sure you want to do that?" My question is: Why should we restrict ourselves from experimenting even if it sounds weird to other people?

I give you an example where it is desirable to let an unprivileged user perform certain tasks. You want to know if there are any employees in your office who are storing videos in their home directory and filling up the disk space to a great amount. You have a department called "Command Center or Data Center Operations or Help Desk" call it whatever you would, whose work is to monitor such activities, and you create an account "monitor" for them to monitor such activities but they are not able to do them:

I have searched the web for examples to find out what I'm doing wrong with no luck.

General :: Partitioning / Perform Bad Blocks Scan On Root Partition

Nov 28, 2010

My root partition is formatted as ext3 and I would like to perform a bad blocks scan on it. Normally e2fsck -c -c does this, but you can not run it on a mounted partition. I know it is possible to force a fsck to run at boot by creating the file /forcefsck but is it possible to specify that it should also check for bad blocks? If not, what is the recommended way to check for bad blocks on the root partition? I would like to avoid having to create a rescue disk and boot off of it.

General :: How To Give User Same Access Level As Root - Fedora 14 - KDE

Apr 9, 2011

First, I am new to linux I just finished installing Fedora 14 on a different PC which I will be using solely to explore Linux. However the first annoying problem I encountered was that I can't do a lot of things without Linux asking me for the root password. This has become really annoying, I want to stop fedora from asking for root authentication every time I want to explore something here and there.

Among the work-arounds that I've tried and didn't quite work for me are:
1. login as root on the kdm - I can login as root but because I am also encouraging my sister to explore fedora 14 she needs the same access as root too. We have our own preferences so we both need individual accounts that have same access level as root.

2. change userid to 0 (same as root) and modify groups to be exactly the same as root's groups - very bad solution, what it did was make my user a sort of "alias" for the root. It basically uses the same /root/ folder, same settings and all that stuff. Again, my sister and I need separate accounts for a more personal feel.

3. use terminal and go sudo, sudoers, etc - very bad idea, I want to explore using the kde gui. And again I want to eliminate the inconvenience of having to type things over and over again. I'd rather type the password over and over again than having to use terminal and sudo everything.

4. beesu, gksu - anyone knows how to make linux automatically wrap everything with beesu/gksu?

since we are just exploring, we are willing to trade the systems, integrity and security for the convenience of having freedom to explore everything in it. I don't care, it could blow up the pc for all I care (it's old and for experiment anyway).

This exploring linux of ours is a make or break for us to using linux. If there is no solution to this problem, we'll probably scrap the whole "migrate to linux" idea.

I thinking of making Linux recognize our user id the same way it recognizes uid 0 but I have no idea how to do this.

Ubuntu :: Way To Trigger Root-level Process?

Jun 29, 2010

I have what I hope someone finds to be a simple problem. I am running a data acquisition computer for a research project, where multiple people use the same non-privileged user account to take data and save it to /incoming. Once the file has been closed, I would like to somehow copy the data into a more permanent location owned by root. Obviously giving the shared user account sudo permission would be a huge security hole.

I know that this should be possible using some sort of client/server connection, but writing my own server just for this little task seems a bit cumbersome, and is something I have no experience with. Nor have I ever written a daemon/init script before.

Does anyone have any ideas on a simple procedure I could use? Very few things are fixed in stone, but the copy operation is necessary - the final location is a RAID5 array, and the write speeds are too slow to keep up with the data stream.

If a client/server type of thing really is the best way to go, anyone have any links to good tutorials to make a simple server and daemonize it?

Ubuntu Networking :: Root Level Parent Directory - Mounting Windows Share?

Mar 26, 2010

I've mucked through and figured out how to mount a windows share. I can access the folders I was looking for, but the windows share was not what I thought it would be. I was looking for the specific shared folder. Instead I got a root level parent directory that included the folder I wanted, and a couple others.

smbclient -L <ipaddress> gives me a parent directory on the root

First question: Can I mount a specific folder within a share?
Second question: Could somebody define share? I thought it was the specific shared folder, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

OpenSUSE :: Move Transparently Between Run Level 3 And Run Level 5 As Autologin User?

Aug 10, 2010

I've been able to kludge a kill script which finds the correct pid for the kdeserver (or gnome server) after my system comes up in run level 5 so I can drop back to run level 3 mode. Lots of experimentation showed me that using telinit 3 and telinit 5 would occasionally leave the video memory in a mess and I would have the black screen of death.

I set the security parameter setting to autologin for me since I am the only user of my machine, but I still have to kludge the default setting under sysconfig (the DEFAULT_WM) under Window Manager to pick a certain window manager, so it takes time to manually switch the desktop.

Right now I can leave the gui and drop back to cli, but painful experimenting showed me that killing the X server is a no no. Right now I kill the kde server, which sends the SIGTERM to the X windows manager, which then figures out that it has to shut down.

Questions: Is there a better way of doing this? Apparently openSUSE figures that we have multiple users logging into the gui desktop, so the gui is always kept running and a login window with the desktop manager option forces the user to login in. With autologin, this never happens, but no choice of desktop is possible on the fly.

Can some type of script be set up to painlessly enable this to happen? And what is the best way of bringing either the Gnome or KDE desktop manager down gracefully? I do get lots of error messages as the system attempts to recover and X shuts down. It appears that apparently the single user with autologin is left out in the cold.

I've read about cron but I guess it's not a solution in this case because whenever computer starts the application must run once.I also have read about the/etc/ rc.local file but I made some tests changing it and they didn't work, the computer starts asking me the login and password but nothing run after that. The inittab was the same. In this way, someone know how to initialize an application developed in C when the computer starts?

General :: Sed Command Does Not Perform Substitution

Jul 22, 2010

I've been trying to use a find command with -exec to find the differences between identically-named files in different paths. My initial attempt was to do something like this:
Code: find trunk/ -type f -not -path '*.svn*' -exec diff '{}' `echo '{}' | sed 's/^trunk///'` ;

Unfortunately this does not work at all as expected (the diff ends up executing on the same file)! I have narrowed it down to the subshell (inside the ``) but beyond that I have no idea. For some reason the sed, though written correctly, does not perform the substitution. I've changed the diff to echo and played with the sed command and the only way I can get it to perform _any_ substitution is to use .* as the regex. Even s/.*trunk.*/SUB/ doesn't work. Any insight into the inner workings of -exec/subshells/pipes or some crap I'm missing? Don't worry about rewriting the command to make it work; I simply swapped the paths and got rid of the subshell nonsense and everything works fine.

General :: Perform HDD Cloning / Mirroring?

May 10, 2011

Currently I backing up the MBR, the C and the other partitions to an external USB HDD and from there I restore them if needed. I use the SystemRescueCd and commands like dd if=/dev/sd* of=/mnt/PC_name/backupmbr.1 count=1 bs=512 and ntfsclone --save-image --output /mnt/PC_name/PC_name_c.img /dev/sd*1 etc. I want to clone the HDD the way, however, that I omit the external USB drive. I want to connect the new HDD to the PC and do the cloning directly from one disc to the other.

My questions are:

- Can you provide me with the exact command?
- Is that a difference if the disc is SATA or IDE?
- Can I copy the disc even if the old disc don't wan to boot?

The OS is Windows on the disc I want to clone.
