So the deal is, I've a desktop where I got all of my movies, music etc stored and a laptop which is clean.
And I want to get a tip on some software or ways of moving my movies through my local network.
The reason why I want to do it is because my laptop has an HDMI port that I can hook up to my tv and my desktop doesn't.
I know of SSH and so on, but just wondering if there's an easier/better way, maybe a way to stream the movies from my desktop without any quality loss onto the laptop? I don't prefer SSH due to having to open my ports, I'm quite paranoid about that, want to keep my things impact and secure. (Both of the computers run Ubuntu)
When trying to transfer files from my server to my desktop, the files never get fully transfered. I have windows cmd running a ping to my server, and all is fine until i try to transfer files. Some will transfer fine, and then out of nowhere the server will stop replying. I then have to restart the server to gain access to it. A 2 GB file will transfer about halfway, and then the server will not be able to be pinged. I have static IP on the server and my desktop. Running XP x64 and Ubuntu server 32-bit 9.04. Tried using Samba and NFS Exports. I have both my desktop and server connected to the same gigabit switch, and then my switch connected to my router.
I don't know how to share files between my desktop and laptop, each running Xubuntu (9.04 and 9.10, respectively).using LAN, but I've gotten lost going through several Samba, NFS, and FTP guides, most of which seem oriented towards vanilla Ubuntu.
sudo su was not originally in the steps but it wouldn't give me permission to edit the samba file unless I did. Also at the end it said command not found or something like that when I tried to restart samba, so I just logged out and then back in.So now I can identify Ubuntu and Win 7 from on each other, but I can not access either of them. Ubuntu goes into windows network, then workgroup, shows the computers on the network but when I try to access one this comes up:When windows tries to access Ubuntu it request for username and password. I type it in but it does not recognize it.
P.S. I allowed the Documents folder on Ubunto to share across the Network, and while it shows up in along with myshare on Win 7, it still requests for username and password.
Request:Tutorial for a complete novice how to back up Ubuntu partition (recommended backup applications, commands) and transfer to different hardware (from Intel laptop to ARM laptop). Specifically, copy Ubuntu from "HP AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58" to "Netwalker i.MX515 Cortex-A8"[URL]Which partition imaging tools or commands would one use?Does one have to switch kernels, modules - if so, how?
i have got a laptop for the first time that i'll be taking to college. I have a lot of data on my PC which i want to transfer to my laptop. My computer has Lucid 32bit while laptop has 64 bit installed,Data is too much and transfering via usb drives will take a lot of time.. I do not know how to set up a network.
I am trying to transfer a lot of data from my laptop to my computer. Both are running Ubuntu 10.04 and both have Samba installed, and folders are setup for sharing. The laptop has a 56Mbps Wireless G built in module, and the computer has a Airlink AWLL6075 Wireless N USB Adapter 300Mbps. (I got the USB adapter working with the internet, since there was an issue with it just working out the box)
I have a wireless network, since wired is out of the question. The router is a Belkin Play N600 HD if that makes any difference. When i try to transfer the files across the speed of the transfer maxes out at about 785 Kbps (My Internet speed is 7Mbps=875 KB/s). It seems that the file is being sent to the router and then the internet and back to the router and then my computer.
I figure that bottleneck is my Laptop at 56Mbps, but that still gives a theoretical max of 7MB/s even at a low connection/link counting it at 24Mbps would still be 3MB/s. I even tried making a wireless Ad-Hoc network to transfer the files but when i went to Network it wouldn't show any shares.
I'm missing something to make it go faster and i really can't figure out what it is, maybe because I am too close to it.
I am using pgp and over the years I have built up my keyring. Now I am planning to change my laptop. How can I transfer all my keys (my private key and public keys of others with whom I correspond) to the new laptop.
I have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.
I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing. Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch. At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder. For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens. The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.
I would like to know if it is normal to experience 10MB/s data transfer rates during copying between partitions on my local hard drives (Toshiba 250GB 5400rpm SATA) while having three times faster (30MB/s) transfer rates between local partitions and USB drives (Kingston 8GB).
I have a number of queries but will start with one. I presently operate 11.04 Classic (no effects). OS is NOT set up as dual boot. As I am considering purchasing a new Desktop, I am wondering what is the best way to recover such things as folders, Firefox bookmarks etc. for four users.
I do have a external HDD which I guess could be used for a possible backup if that is the way to go! The new computer will probably have Windows 7 installed with which I assume I would probably dual boot.
I would like to transfer the data from Palm desktop on my windows vista laptop to my Linux netbook. The pda has stopped working so I cannot sync directly from pda to either computers.
Is this possible and if so what software do I need for the Linux and how do I do it, I would need step by step instructions as I am new to Linux and really only use it for web-browsing and skype.
I'm trying to switch from KDE (3.5) to LXDE. I don't suppose any of my KDE settings can work there? I would especially like to keep my keyboard shortcuts.
I have just begun using Debian Kwheezy and I'm also a newbie to Linux. My question is, how do I create or transfer folder icons to the desktop? Kwheezy's way isn't the same as most distros I've used.
I was given a Linux Asus eee PC 4G Netbook. I know nothing about Linux, but I know if I use it, I will create documents that I need to put on my PC for a permanent record. Also, can I transfer a document written in Word to my Linux Netbook. I know these are kind of stupid questions, but I was unable to find the answer after an hour of net surfing.
i installed it correctly and then it loaded,, GREAT, but then i was looking through all different options on the first screen, i was looking through the different features and i looked at my documents. there was nothing there i booted up vista and found the folders, so i was wondering if there was a way to transfer the files.
i have taken a basic networking class that involved both XP and fedora. I was recommended to use ubuntu though because it's easier to use anyways i have a world of warcraft folder on a windows vista running computer and was wondering how i could use either telnet or FTP to get that ~20GB folder over to my linux desktop.I installed 10.04 and have installed WINE (which i'm still trying to figure out how to work).
I need to re-install windows on the windows side of my pc (my HDD is partitioned), and was wondering if there's any way to back up my pics and iTunes library by placing them on the Ubuntu side of my PC?
With transfering files and folders across from windows xp to lovely ubuntu 10.10 without the need for any usb sticks or anything. I installed Linux via the installer which is found in the ISO image whilst still in windows.
I used Winzip to open the ISO image and found the installer for installing whilst in windows xp so it installed it on the same partition as xp.
He's got these files for linux, like installations, and some themes, and stuff like that, but it's not like windows, idk how to transfer files. On AIM on windows i can just transfer files, but i cant do it the same way with Ubuntu.
I have a ubuntu server 10.04 with LAMP installed. I also have ubuntu 10.10 on a laptop and can copy files to the server fine. To keep my website uptodate, I usually use Filezilla without any problems. I have just installed Fedora 14 on an old desktop and set up "my stall" ok. The problem is that I cannot copy any files from Ferdoa to the server due to:-
Response: 550 Permission denied. Error: Critical file transfer error I have tried to change the directory on the server "/var/www" using chmod -R 775* and chmod -R 777*, but it makes no difference, the file transfer still fails.
im trying to get the files off of my unbootable laptop with ubuntu live cd. The problem i have is that i get into ubuntu then go to the computer option but i dont see the C: drive where my files are stored. How can i make it so i can see the hard drive in the laptop so i can copy my files to an external hard drive?
