General :: Transfer Files From Remote To Local Machine Using SSH?
Jun 28, 2011I have a Ubuntu server hosted on Amazon EC2. I need to create an automated backup scheme so I created another Ubuntu instance on my local network which is hosted in a virtual environment. I managed to transfer the necessary files between 2 machines on the same network using the rsync command:
rsync -azvv -e ssh /home/path/folder1/ remoteuser@remotehost.remotedomain:/home/path/folder2
How can I do the same thing but transferring files from my Amazon server to my local server? Is there a way I can achieve this with port forwarding, or by VPN, or anything else? It doesn't have to be rsync. If you know about a better method, kindly let me know.
Ubuntu :: Transfer Files - Desktop - Laptop ?
Oct 17, 2010So the deal is, I've a desktop where I got all of my movies, music etc stored and a laptop which is clean.
And I want to get a tip on some software or ways of moving my movies through my local network.
The reason why I want to do it is because my laptop has an HDMI port that I can hook up to my tv and my desktop doesn't.
I know of SSH and so on, but just wondering if there's an easier/better way, maybe a way to stream the movies from my desktop without any quality loss onto the laptop? I don't prefer SSH due to having to open my ports, I'm quite paranoid about that, want to keep my things impact and secure. (Both of the computers run Ubuntu)

Aug 16, 2009When trying to transfer files from my server to my desktop, the files never get fully transfered. I have windows cmd running a ping to my server, and all is fine until i try to transfer files. Some will transfer fine, and then out of nowhere the server will stop replying. I then have to restart the server to gain access to it. A 2 GB file will transfer about halfway, and then the server will not be able to be pinged. I have static IP on the server and my desktop. Running XP x64 and Ubuntu server 32-bit 9.04. Tried using Samba and NFS Exports. I have both my desktop and server connected to the same gigabit switch, and then my switch connected to my router.

May 22, 2010Alright so i just wanted to try and get remote desktop connections running so i can access files on the other computers in my house. For my first try i went after my laptop. I'm using rdesktop.
First couple times i tried i typed in

After about 15 seconds it would pop back with

I realized that my laptop's firewall was blocking the packets, so i created a custom rule that allows all TCP packets on port 3389. So i fired up rdesktop again. Now it pops back with:

But instantaneously, not after 15 seconds (not sure if thats significant or not.) I checked my firewall's log and it allowed the tcp packets.
Debian :: Remote Desktop View Video / Music Files - Lost?
Nov 8, 2015My wife has taken over the desktop (ubuntu 14.04 LTS). I've setup a second wireless router, dedicated to the MAC address of my laptop (debian) and using ssh I can view my email (thunderbird), but I'm not sure what to do to view woodworking videos without downloading. So, do I need to setup tunneling, do I need to view the windowmanager or is there an way to run videos? Anyway I've come along way using HOWTo's with breaking debian. Not sure how to proceed.
Note: The primary wireless router is from my ISP.

I'm trying to find a similar solution for ubuntu, so if need be, I can xfer between windows and ubuntu. I have done cross-OS remote desktoping previously, using tightVNC on windows to control Ubuntu and it worked pretty well, but I could not do file transfers, and that is what my major premise is.

Feb 6, 2011I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?

Mar 18, 2010I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. Dec 14, 2009I have VMware server installed on this machine. I also have a Windows XP VM running all the time. I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?

May 29, 2011I have a number of queries but will start with one. I presently operate 11.04 Classic (no effects). OS is NOT set up as dual boot. As I am considering purchasing a new Desktop, I am wondering what is the best way to recover such things as folders, Firefox bookmarks etc. for four users.
I do have a external HDD which I guess could be used for a possible backup if that is the way to go! The new computer will probably have Windows 7 installed with which I assume I would probably dual boot.

Jan 20, 2010I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.
