I want to disable the touchpad while typing on my girlfriends samsung nc10 netbook. (she always selects and deletes text accidentally.. )
I though, this would be possible with gpointing-device-settings. But there, the touchpad is not shown, only a IMPS/2Logitech wheel mouse is shown. Although there is only the touchpad and no mouse...
So how can I enable touchpad configuration there?
I am running a debian squeeze machine on a ibm t40 laptop with window maker as my window manager. I am using gpointing-device-settings as a program to get the scroll bar on my touch pad working. unfortunately, I can't get the settings to stick after i shutdown and turn on. I have to go into the program and unclick then reclick the button. i'm using version 1.3.2 (ive tried both deb and source versions). does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? and if there is any configure files that I could configure instead of having to use the gui program.

Is there a way to do this automatically?
Secondly I've the following problem: I cannot use "click and move" with my touchpad. For example, when I try to move a window around: Normally one would click the left button, hold it and move the window via touchpad. But every time I click the left button, any other movement with my touchpad is disabled. Is there a way around this?
I am having problems with my touchpad on my dv7 notebook, that I can not resolve... so I thought it would be a good idea to update the gpointing-device-settings that came with the opensuse 11.3 repositories (version 1.3.1-1.2 too old maybe)
So I downloaded the source files but when I try to ./configure, I have some errors telling my that my gtk+ and gnome-settings-daemon versions are older (that is not true, I check them and they are newer)

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix.

I am having trouble with connecting my Sony Ericsson phone with my Ubuntu 9.10 using USB. It doesn't matter how I choose to connect it - "File Transfer" and "Phone Mode" - both does not work. The phone IS charching, when it is connected, but it doesn't shows anywhere. When I type "lsusb" in terminal, it does not show me my phone. When I look in "/var/log/messages" there is NO error. It does not even show the procedure of connecting and disconnecting the phone. What could be the problem?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed Netbook Remix on a partition on my Advent 4211 (MSI Wind clone) XP netbook. It is the first time I have ever used Linux, apart from abortive efforts to install various distros on an old laptop a few years ago (wifi wouldn't work).
(1) I am a touch-typist and would like to set the Shift key to RELEASE the CapsLock, as on old manual and electric typewriters, which is how my other Windows keyboards are set to operate, but the nearest option (out of so many ) in Ubuntu seems to be "Pause CapsLock", which is no good.
(2) I need to DISABLE the touchpad - the nearest option seems to be "Disable while typing" - inadequate for me, trailing thumbs are causing havoc I like this OS (it seems especially neat with the latest Chrome) but those two "shortcomings" are constant nuisances.
Since last Saturday (11-20) my touchpad enable/disable key stopped working.I don't make much use of the touchpad and it usually stays disabled most of the time so I can't be sure it is really on Saturday that I lost this functionality or maybe the day before (I'm positive it's not longer than that).Before that it worked flawlessly, now it's like a dead key (which is not broken by the way, tested on a live CD).In these past week I have been looking for quite some time for other users who might have experienced this problem after the update of two specific packages (console-data and keyboard-configuration) I had on the 20th and which made me think might have broken the key binding.Not finding anything at all and after having tried for said packages both newer versions from sid and previous known-to-have-worked-before versions from the install CD, I started thinking the problem was not there (I consequently restored the testing ones).
The days before this happened I tinkered a little bit with gpointing-device-settings and tpconfig (this last one was a simple tpconfig -i), but at this point I start thinking there might have been something else I've done, somewhere else I can't recall probably.
Oh, I forgot to mention that the touchpad still works flawlessly, I can enable/disable it through gconf (actually I made two handy shortcut to the "/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled" value), so it is not an issue of making it work, just the toggle key which on my laptop is a dedicated one (no Fn modifier) and anyway all the other special keys still work fine.I checked gnome-keybinding-properties and there is no action for the touchpad there, but I don't know for sure if there was one before (and I haven't been able to add one). Anyway in gconf I noticed a key in "/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/keybindings/touchpad" has the value "XF86TouchpadToggle", not sure if that means the keybinding exists or what.
What more can I add? What I'm here to ask now is some guidance on figuring out what I might have done wrong considering what I was able to tell you, but mostly, considering what I wasn't able to tell you and am not even aware to have done.
Okay here is a good one. I am running KDE and i am trying to use the instructions found here [URL] to enable the touchpad tapppping. I have done it this way before successfully but now i seem to be having a problem. When i started all i had was a 10-synaptics.fdi file that just had the word synaptics on it...then when i tried to modify it the only change that took place were the addition of 1 2 3 after it. I've tried over and over with different editors with the same result and no touchpad tapping.

Okay currently I am using a a Belkin F6D4050v1 usb wireless n card on a 32 bit intall of ubuntu 9.10. I have already installed ndiswrapper and installed the the rt2870.inf driver and rebooted. I have installed gsynaptics, it starts up with gnome, but every time I log in, I need to go to Control Center->touchpad and enable tapping manually. In openSUSE 11.3 the default behavior was that if you enabled once, it remains so. Also it would be great that tapping to be enabled by default ( like in Ubuntu ), because not everybody knows how to enable it.

I have a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze (I did NOT upgrade from a previous version of Debian, as that seems to cause this problem with some Ubuntu installations). I have the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics driver installed (already reinstalled it to no avail) and the gsynaptics package, which was supposed to add the tab in the mouse preferences but did not (as suggested here: I have a Samsung RF510-S01US if there is something about the touchpad this computer has that is not supported or something. (I know for a fact that this touchpad can handle multi-touch inputs, as it works under Windows 7)

Nor has the Debian IRC-channel been able to channel the requiered information to me so I'm comming here as sort of a last resort.So my issue is that, as described in the topic, none of the settings I set in /etc/X11/xorg.conf have any effect on the touchpad. Other settings in xorg.conf such as color-depth for the screen and driver for the graphics card have effect but not the touchpad section. And if I make a syntax-error in the xorg.conf file X doesn't want to start, which is a clear indication that it's using that config file.

The problem is the top gnome panel. See the photo below: As you can see, the network icon is not shown properly while the Me menu is being shown twice. I can't even restart or log out or shut down at this situation without pressing the keystroke to turn the power off.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS. My laptop is an HP Pavilion TX1210AU (TX1000 series). After disabling the touchpad using the toggle button and reenabling it again, it stopped working. I tried restarting my laptop and the mouse worked again only up to the Login Screen. After logging in to my account, the mouse froze again. I tried making a new account and tried logging into it (I'm using it now) and it's now fixed. Does Ubuntu change any user settings everytime the touchpad toggle (on/off) button is switched? Maybe I could just reenable it myself.
