For some reason whenever I'm torrenting after a certain amount of time my networking ability just stops. My network traffic shoots down to zero and I can't bring anything like the ability to request a website back until I restart.
View 9 RepliesI have just installed Ubuntu on a machine that has an ATI Radeon 3450 video card installed. If I boot the machine into recovery mode and then select 'normal boot' at the pause I get to a fully functional desktop that is using the fglrx driver. Compiz is happy and my graphics look great. If I boot normally and just let the machine do its own thing I get just past the 'select' screen and the machine stops. There is no further disk activity and the monitor goes into standby mode. I can't see anything relevant in any of the log files.

I have set my network proxy configurations to tor and polipo settings (127.0.0.1:8118 for http and 127.0.0.1:9050 for socks) works great in firefox, but if I nmap scan my router, it says that the incoming signal came from my other ip.. yes I have 2 internet connections, no I am not a hacker. so, I am wondering what I am missiing here, it has to be something simple, just a line I need to add to a config file or something.

So on my Ubuntu desktop I would like to install something as simple as possible to be used as a proxy, I've seen squid but does that only handle http requests? Does that handle streaming requests and such as well? This so I can see the source of some media that's being played in flash or pps.tv
View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday I installed Maverick (32bit), fixed the soundcard and everything worked very well. In particular my touchscreen (eturbotouch) worked now for the first time. Unfortunately there is a problem with the mouse. After some time the left mouse button stops working. There is no problem with the right button and with the movement of the cursor. I tried several mices, therefore the problem shouldn't be related to the mouse hardware.

Everything works on reboot but when i leave it running then when i wake up in the morning the card reader has stopped working and does not show up in lsusb. The only way to get it working again is to reboot then it stops after x amount of time and the same problem.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an acer aspire L-5100 with Vista and fedora dual boot configuration. Fedora 11 worked fine. After upgrading with preupgrade The system shows a strange behaviour. The startup screen ( with no the little f in the first ) is first blue with the white place in the middle , the filling with the fedora f very slow ( 5 minutes ) and then nothing. No harddisk or network activity no booting. <ctrl><alt><delete> works for rebooting. <altfx> for console not. Hacking <alt f2><esc> very often and fast leads sometimes to a console where then the boot process starts running and the system comes up with gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm after fresh install of Fedora x64, did all updates. I have wireless pci card TP-LINK TL-wn510G (Atheros chipset) which was detected correctly.
Everything is working smoothly until I start to download from internet in firefox (or in konqueror - no difference). On increased network activity my mouse cursor starts to lag/jump when moving - it's almost impossible to do anything using mouse when there is file download. On minor traffic, like browsing webpages, I don't notice such behaviour.
I checked if its rather because of hdd activity not the network, but no - when copying big file on hdd everything works fine.
I'm also experiencing huge ssh lag/jitter despite the ping is low.
I fired top when downloading, but there is no process eating cpu in suspicious way.
I have a regular usb mouse.
On the same computer I have installed Win 7 and OpenSuse and nothing like this happens on that systems.
I think there might be a some kind of conflict between wifi card and usb mouse (they share resources) but don't know how to check/repair. Could you please tell me how should I proceed to check what is going on. I haven't modified any hw settings, the installation went w/o any errors.
Since I updated to Karmic, I noticed a very annoying problem that forces me to restart Firefox every 20 minutes or so: When the cursor is located inside the address bar (CRTL+L), I always type one or two characters, a drop down menu appears with most visited links that contain these characters, I press <down-arrow>, <Enter> and go to one of my usual links. I use this all the time, which allows me to go to me usual links in a second or two. The problem is that this feature stops working after browsing for some time: no drop-down menu appears and pressing the down-arrow does nothing.
The only other problem that happens in coincidence is that you have to click 2 or 3 times on the 'arrow-down' button on the right side of the address bar before you get a drop-down menu with the most visited links (this normally happens on the first click). The problem appears at random moments (typically after some 10 to 20 minutes of browsing, but sometimes earlier) and disappears when I restart FF. I tried clearing the history, but that does not change anything. Does anyone else see this problem and knows how to fix it?

FF 3.5.6, with some add-ons: adblock plus, bugmenot, all-in-one gestures, xmarks and some dictionaries, all working without any problems.
I have a box setup to do some torrent downloading. I've seen that box achieve over 1MB/s traffic. However, when torrenting at rates above 80-100kB/s my roommates Windows 7 box can't seem to connect to the 'net at all. Sometimes I also have problems with my Ubuntu 10.04 boxes with Firefox timing out. Also, smart net enabled devices such as the Tv and Bluray player that can do Pandora and Netflix can't connect under these traffic conditions.
I realize that the easiest solution is to just pause or BW limit the torrent. However, for some torrents, peak 'net usage time is the only time I connect to any peers. However, my question is why can the network sustain the 1MB/s traffic yet not let multiple people surf the web? Are the Tx packets not getting out? Are the Rx packets not getting in (from the http requests)? Is there a solution *besides* BW limits on the torrent. Is there a router configuration that might alleviate or fix this problem? The service is Att Uverse with a 2Wire 3801HGV router.
On Ubuntu, I know that a user can set a global proxy setting (through a gui, Network Proxy) which will affect all protocols (right?). However, I have set up a server box (no gui) and would like for most of its ports to not go through a proxy. Instead, I'd only like the activity that transmission-daemon does (but not the web UI) to go through a proxy. Is this in any way possible?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a problem with the new network manager a week ago and got it solved with help from the forum so now I'm back again. I have a dual boot with Windows 7 (I have to use it when serving my corporate masters) so I wasn't in my Fedora partition much this week.
I just noticed this and I'm positive it wasn't doing it before my network manager problem but I'm not sure when it started or if they're related.
I'm running F15. The machine is an HP Elitebook 8440p and has a wifi light that is also a touch button to turn the wireless on/off. Whenever there is activity on the network now it blinks between orange and blue. I know that isn't really a big deal but it's really annoying and is driving me completely nuts!! The normal behavior is orange when it's off, solid blue when it's on (or connected) and blinks orange/blue just while it's connecting. During network activity it's always been just solid blue and that's what I want.
I found a script that some Ubuntu users said fixed the same problem but when I tried to copy it the directory they said to put it in "/etc/network/ifup.d" doesn't exist. I'm assuming that's a distro difference between Ubuntu and Fedora?
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas how to fix it?
I have a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with Centos 5.4 installed. I am having an issue where there is no network activity on any of the NIC's.(Broadcom and Intel).
I have read that this might be somewhat common but have not found any solutions. I am unable to ping anything internal or external. Has anyone encountered this problem and have a potential fix?
I'm not sure if this belongs in the Server or Networking section of the forums. Anyway, last month I upgraded my server to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Since then, I've had a recurring problem wherein after a certain period of time, the server stops accepting network connections. Ubuntu 10 will continue to reject network connections until someone logs into the server locally, after which time network connectivity is restored and the cycle begins anew. Essentially, the server goes into a "half sleep mode". I say half because the computer is still on and the fans are running.
I've done some searching around various forms and initially figured this issue was related to problems with the Network Manager service (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lu...er/+bug/524454), so I removed the service altogether. However, this problem is still occurring.
I've poured over /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog, but have noticed no irregular behavior. Has anyone else experienced this issues? I'd rather not resort to downgrading back to Gusty Gibbon if I can help it.

Using Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10, have a router. Whether connected via ethernet or wifi, I'm experiencing a problem downloading files. Trying to download a linuxmint iso , my laptop will freeze up after 5 or 10 min. I have plenty of disk space, and screensaver off. I've googled quite a bit and can't get a clue. My desktop will freeze up too. I can't imagine what would cause this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've added this packman repo: Index of /suse/openSUSE_11.4/ and installed all the necessary libraries and tools required as mentioned here using zypper: Restricted formats/11.4 - openSUSE Community Wiki When I try to play any movie in VLC I'm able to hear the audio for some time usually 3-4 mins and then audio totally stops though the video continues to play. A random seek or a seek forward/back also cause similar issue almost immediately. I switched the output module in VLC preference to different settings: default, SDL, Unix OSS, Alsa but the same issue persists. The audio recovers if I just enter the Audio settings menu in VLC preferences and click Save (even without changing anything) but after the same 3-4 mins or by seeking, the audio stops.
I disabled Pulseaudio for my sound card(s) in Yast->Sound, and I even kill the pulseaudio process but it somehow starts itself up again when I change anything in VLC audio preferences or even simply click Save without any changes. I've made sure all the multimedia related packages are installed from the packman repo whenever possible (I still observe there are few packages which do not exist on the packman but the openSUSE 11.4 repo alone eg. phonon-backend-gstreamer, phonon-backend-xine) Here is the rpm query output for the multimedia related libraries:

Sometimes my file share network stops working,and will then work again.I'm lost with this problem. The server pc is a Zenwalk pc.The other pc is a win7 pc. This error only occurs on Zenwalk. When i run puppy from the live cd the file shares are always visible,without fail.Under puppy i use pNethood. I upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 last night in response to a pop up window. When I rebooted after the upgrade my wife immediately complained about the internet not working. Actually the connection up was working but Fedora 11 upgrade had made it slow almost to a stop There are two XP machines the network behind a local D-Link wireless router with Comcast high speed internet. When I disable networking on the Fedora machine the internet connection immediately returns to normal on the other two machines. Also there is a second or two period after enabling networking for a quick upload or download before the connection clogs.I checked the system monitor network history and found that there is a constant networking send rate of just under 180 kb/s in the background.This occurs even when the browser, email client, and automatic backup are off and the only process showing significant CPU use in the system monitor is the monitor itself.
I tried netstat but there were so many /tmp/orbit entries that I could not scroll up to the top of the listing. Is this normal. If so, does anyone know the netstat command options to just see connections with sent packets. I also tried ifconfig -a. This shows no Rx packets at all, and no TX packets except on eth0, The total etho TX packets matches t,he reported by the system monitor, and in the monitor you can watch the total accumulate in approx 180 kb/sec increments. I don't understand why 180kb/sec TX would make a dramatic difference in internet network internet speed. Comcast reports upload speeds in megabytes. I need to be able to use the net in Federa, but I am also curious to learn what is the caused the problem.
I am currently dual booting between Linux Mint 10, and Windows Vista SP2. Wireless works fine in both these OSes, but when I quit Mint and load Windows, 70% of the time my wireless stops working.
ie, it does not detect any wireless networks nearby, althought there are tons of them.
Restarting the wireless device doesnt help, I have to restart my computer at least 4 times for wireless to start working again.
And as of now, my wireless in Linux Mint has stopped working.
After doing updates to get current with Debian Jessie, I've noticed very annoying network problems going on.
This all happened while also setting up a media server box which led me to much confusion, much of what is described here [URL] ....
I've started this new thread to try to diagnose and properly take care of this specific problem alone:
Browsing the internet becomes very slow, unbearably to the point everything keeps loading up forever. This only happen while having a torrent application opened, the effects are almost immediate, closing the application and browsing resumes as normal.
How about throttling back torrent? This does not work, it even doesn't even need be at top speed. With bare minimum connections and speed will still lead browsing to a crawl.
Even so, every other device on the network is un-affected, router and other PCs continue to browse and respond very well, making it a specific on the computer in question (but also happens on my other debian jessie machine).
Can I even reach the internet? Yes I can, and this is the weird part... I can ping, solve DNS and almost everything else without issues, the only thing affected is actually browsing the internet.
I'd even setup DNS cache with dnsmasq to see if it could speed things up. Disabled ipv6, and trying pretty much every method I could find.
Having pretty much ruled out dns problems and internet connectivity, I'm at a loss for what to look for and try. Only symptom I can describe now is that the browser will start to load up webpage but never completes... but only while torrent is active.
My current setup:
I'm on Debian Jessie, a desktop with eth manually connected. Using dnsmasq for dns caching. Disable ipv6 on the network (by the way, it keeps disabling it self I dunno why).
Running KDE with ktorrent as the client. The same thing happens on my setup media box, also Debian but with deluged running instead.
Browser in question are Firefox and Chrome, both have issues with this.
Turns out it was just a setting in my own router, that apparently limits numbers of connections made, meaning while torrent is working other connections were sure dead.
But it also happens when lots of connections are being made in other ways too. The router in question is Humax HG100R-L2, provided by my ISP. The setting is in the firewall section called IP flood detection.
I tried to do a scheduled software update several times today (8/20/11) and nothing seems to download, though I do get the "Downloading" PackageKit dialog message (the System Monitor shows practically no network activity). In between tries I downloaded some 600 MB .iso files (about 10 minutes each) so I know my internet is working properly. That leaves either PackageKit got hosed in my last update, or servers are down.

The question is simple really, I've added a local universality's time server (what is public) and it's live. but it's added to the end of the default time servers what come with fedora. How do I get fedora to just use the local time server, is it a case of removing the default time servers for fedora, but there is a box what says advanced options which are. sync system clock before starting service ???? & use Local time source (( is that the same as the local ntp server that I've got set up ))Hope some body can help me with the network time protocol part of Date/Time settings.

I just recently erased my hard drive and installed ubuntu 9.10 all over again. I updated as expected and everything was going well, until, my internet stopped working after maybe 40 mins or so after a successful boot. Now this same thing happens every 40 mins and I have to reboot the computer by forcing my laptop to shut down by holding down the power button. This also made me aware of another problem when restarting or logging off my laptop. The laptop hangs at that terminal-syled screen and the underscore blinks and fails to shut the computer down/log off. I resort to holding down the power button to restart. I am using a wireless connection with WEP key protection.

I have a wireless network using this driver:

and everything works fine for some time. After a few hours or maybe less (if I push bandwidth to the limit) the Internet freezes. I can't even ping my router. If I disconnect and reconnect either the device or the connection via network manager , it does work for a minute only and then freezes again. If I restart Ubuntu entirely, it works again. But for a while...
It works 100% in Win7 and I have no problem at all there. But I am very annoyed that I cant have reliability in Ubuntu. I want Ubuntu as default.
It has something to do with drivers or an inner variable or buffer or something.
At least, is there any way to reset my network connection without rebooting the OS?
I tried sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart but it gives me: Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.
The error is: error while loading shared libraries: libncurses.so.5: cannot open shared object file: Error 24 This occurs after a good time of running, after I added some file stuff to my code. I can't see why this is happening.
