Nov 3, 2010I'd like to essentially log the firefox status bar "waiting for x...", "transferring from x...", all those messages. Really what I'm after is a log of all servers contacted.

Server :: Monitor All Of The Activity Of The Users That Logging In?
May 2, 2010I wanted to know is there any way to monitor (I mean log)all of the activity of the users that logging in a server (as root) for example:
1.when do they logging in
2.what commands do they use at what time ( I know that history command do somehow the same but it does not save all of the activity of users exactly with the time of that activity)
3.which one of them installed which package on the server
4.what did they copy or move at what time and summery all the activity that each of them do on the server individually.

May 28, 2011I am trying to figure out how to set ALL of my network activity to go through tor. I have set my network proxy configurations to tor and polipo settings (127.0.0.1:8118 for http and 127.0.0.1:9050 for socks) works great in firefox, but if I nmap scan my router, it says that the incoming signal came from my other ip.. yes I have 2 internet connections, no I am not a hacker. so, I am wondering what I am missiing here, it has to be something simple, just a line I need to add to a config file or something.

So on my Ubuntu desktop I would like to install something as simple as possible to be used as a proxy, I've seen squid but does that only handle http requests? Does that handle streaming requests and such as well? This so I can see the source of some media that's being played in flash or pps.tv

Nov 19, 2009I have an acer aspire L-5100 with Vista and fedora dual boot configuration. Fedora 11 worked fine. After upgrading with preupgrade The system shows a strange behaviour. The startup screen ( with no the little f in the first ) is first blue with the white place in the middle , the filling with the fedora f very slow ( 5 minutes ) and then nothing. No harddisk or network activity no booting. <ctrl><alt><delete> works for rebooting. <altfx> for console not. Hacking <alt f2><esc> very often and fast leads sometimes to a console where then the boot process starts running and the system comes up with gnome.

May 21, 2010I'm after fresh install of Fedora x64, did all updates. I have wireless pci card TP-LINK TL-wn510G (Atheros chipset) which was detected correctly.
Everything is working smoothly until I start to download from internet in firefox (or in konqueror - no difference). On increased network activity my mouse cursor starts to lag/jump when moving - it's almost impossible to do anything using mouse when there is file download. On minor traffic, like browsing webpages, I don't notice such behaviour.
I checked if its rather because of hdd activity not the network, but no - when copying big file on hdd everything works fine.
I'm also experiencing huge ssh lag/jitter despite the ping is low.
I fired top when downloading, but there is no process eating cpu in suspicious way.
I have a regular usb mouse.
On the same computer I have installed Win 7 and OpenSuse and nothing like this happens on that systems.
I think there might be a some kind of conflict between wifi card and usb mouse (they share resources) but don't know how to check/repair. Could you please tell me how should I proceed to check what is going on. I haven't modified any hw settings, the installation went w/o any errors.
Fedora Networking :: Blinking Wifi Light During Network Activity F15 / Fix It?
Jul 1, 2011I had a problem with the new network manager a week ago and got it solved with help from the forum so now I'm back again. I have a dual boot with Windows 7 (I have to use it when serving my corporate masters) so I wasn't in my Fedora partition much this week.
I just noticed this and I'm positive it wasn't doing it before my network manager problem but I'm not sure when it started or if they're related.
I'm running F15. The machine is an HP Elitebook 8440p and has a wifi light that is also a touch button to turn the wireless on/off. Whenever there is activity on the network now it blinks between orange and blue. I know that isn't really a big deal but it's really annoying and is driving me completely nuts!! The normal behavior is orange when it's off, solid blue when it's on (or connected) and blinks orange/blue just while it's connecting. During network activity it's always been just solid blue and that's what I want.
I found a script that some Ubuntu users said fixed the same problem but when I tried to copy it the directory they said to put it in "/etc/network/ifup.d" doesn't exist. I'm assuming that's a distro difference between Ubuntu and Fedora?
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas how to fix it?
CentOS 5 Networking :: No Network Activity Dell PowerEdge 1950?
Mar 12, 2010I have a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with Centos 5.4 installed. I am having an issue where there is no network activity on any of the NIC's.(Broadcom and Intel).
I have read that this might be somewhat common but have not found any solutions. I am unable to ping anything internal or external. Has anyone encountered this problem and have a potential fix?
Fedora Networking :: Unknown Network Activity Kills Internet Speed
Jul 13, 2009I upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 last night in response to a pop up window. When I rebooted after the upgrade my wife immediately complained about the internet not working. Actually the connection up was working but Fedora 11 upgrade had made it slow almost to a stop There are two XP machines the network behind a local D-Link wireless router with Comcast high speed internet. When I disable networking on the Fedora machine the internet connection immediately returns to normal on the other two machines. Also there is a second or two period after enabling networking for a quick upload or download before the connection clogs.I checked the system monitor network history and found that there is a constant networking send rate of just under 180 kb/s in the background.This occurs even when the browser, email client, and automatic backup are off and the only process showing significant CPU use in the system monitor is the monitor itself.
I tried netstat but there were so many /tmp/orbit entries that I could not scroll up to the top of the listing. Is this normal. If so, does anyone know the netstat command options to just see connections with sent packets. I also tried ifconfig -a. This shows no Rx packets at all, and no TX packets except on eth0, The total etho TX packets matches t,he reported by the system monitor, and in the monitor you can watch the total accumulate in approx 180 kb/sec increments. I don't understand why 180kb/sec TX would make a dramatic difference in internet network internet speed. Comcast reports upload speeds in megabytes. I need to be able to use the net in Federa, but I am also curious to learn what is the caused the problem.
Fedora :: Software Update Servers Down - System Monitor Shows Practically No Network Activity
Aug 21, 2011I tried to do a scheduled software update several times today (8/20/11) and nothing seems to download, though I do get the "Downloading" PackageKit dialog message (the System Monitor shows practically no network activity). In between tries I downloaded some 600 MB .iso files (about 10 minutes each) so I know my internet is working properly. That leaves either PackageKit got hosed in my last update, or servers are down.

Nov 10, 2010Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to setup some form of network connection monitoring and logging?As Australia has CRAP broadband and ISP's utilize Peak & Off-Peak download limits I schedule downloads for my Off-Peak times. Well recently my connection drops out exactly when my off-peak time kicks in and requires my modem to be reset to re-establish my connection.
My ISP is denying they are doing this but I happens everyday now and is getting really frustrating. What I want to try and set up is some sort of monitoring to ping my ISP's default gateway so I can prove it drops at a specific time each day. I am sure there would be something I could configure in Ubuntu but I am a newbie to Ubuntu so don't really know how to achieve this.
Ubuntu Networking :: Logging Onto A WPA PEAP Wireless Network With/ Without CA Certificate
Oct 15, 2010The collage I am going to has a secure wireless net work that we are suppose to be able to log into with a user name and password they give us. They have instructions on how to connect with windows and mac, but not for linux.There tech support has not been any help and I have tried quit a few different combinations but with no luck.
According to their instructions for windows their net work uses WPA-Enterprise for security type, and PEAP. They do not seem to use any root certification authorities, and they have you unchecked "validate server certificate".At [URL]there is some similar thing were you can see screen shots, but I cannot follow these because I do not know what "CA Certificate" to use. Is there a way to do it with out a "CA Certificate"?
OpenSUSE Wireless :: Logging Into A Nonbroadcasting Network
Feb 7, 2011I'm a recent convert to SUSE (well, linux generally), been running it happily on my desktop for about eight months now. So when I learned about KDE plasma netbook I jumped at the opportunity to put it on my laptop too.I have an Acer Aspire One, with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card. I'm not having any luck with knetworkmanager so I did my config in YaST. I can't get on my home wireless network, and I think the problem has something to do with the fact that it doesn't broadcast SSID. Connection works when I set my router to broadcast - I can ping, browse the web, etc. I can't even ping it when it's not broadcasting.
I have checked, and the AR5001 is supported natively (so sayth the web).I'm not lacking any firmware, per the stickied checklist. I can even scan and find my neighbor's (broadcasting SSID) setup. Where do I go next?
Server :: Mapped Network Drive Requires Password After Logging Out?
Jun 14, 2010I have a peer-to-peer network with 25 WinXP Pro computers. I have built a Linux (SuSE) server for the purpose of backing up My Documents, PST files and favourites. Each user has their own folder containing the sync'd files. Each folder is password protected. I have configured each users machine with a mapped 'S' drive, which is the sync'd data folder on the Linux computer. All of the computers seem to end up with a "disconnected network drive" status after either logging out for the day or after some time has elapsed. Some will connect with a double click but others prompt for a password. I have tried mapping the drive using the option "Connect using a different user name", which is fine until the user logs out and back in again. I use SyncToy as a scheduled task, but can't connect to these mapped drives automatically, so the sync process will not work unattended.

Oct 31, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 5530G. On a fresh install, the HDD is silent after logging in and the desktop is immediately ready for use. A few days and updates later, after every login, there's heavy HDD activity that lasts about 20/30 seconds and makes it almost impossible to perform any other task. The entire desktop is visible during said event.
Not a big issue, however it bothers me a little. I've observed this behavior since Ubuntu 9.10. Anyone else experiencing similar problem?
Ubuntu :: Constant HD Activity Bogging Down?
Nov 5, 2010I'm using Lucid on a laptop, (details in sig). Often after I've been running Ubuntu for a while, like a few hours, my HD activity light will come on and not stop, causing my machine to become laggy. (A link might open 3-5 seconds I click on it, typing appears a second after I press the key, a window or dropdown menu might take 5-10 seconds to be drawn.) I currently have Firefox with one tab and a Nautilus window open. Conky says the CPU is running at 10-20%, RAM is almost all used, (I assume Firefox's cache is filling up, since I've been surfing for a while), and swap is around 25% full. I just turned Compiz & Emerald off, but the HD is still spinning away. At this point, I usually log out and in again, or reboot. I though slowing performance with usage, resource-hogging background processes and constant rebooting were Windoze traits! What gives?Apparently, this is caused by Update Manager. Unbeknownst to me, Update Manager was waiting for me to give it the go-ahead, but while it's open, instead of patiently waiting, it renders my computer unusably slow, even though it's not supposed to be doing anything.

During disk activity it sometimes becomes completely unresponsive. The mouse cursor doesn't even move. It actually seems fine when it first boots up, but it gradually gets worse as I use the computer for a while until it eventually becomes completely unusable. I'm only having trouble on the one system.The drive in the system is SATA, and I already checked to make sure DMA was on. Dec 25, 2010I have 10:10 x64 installed on a 1.5 TB drive connected to an Asus motherboard with with 4GB of DDR rRAM and on-board ATi HD4200 compliant graphics. Everything I have installed runs except that the system as a whole freezes from time to time for periods of around five minutes while the disk drive lamp shows that it is active. Until I find a solution I will be using my backup system.
I have tried recompiling kernels but they never generate an initrd image file and thus will not boot!

Feb 12, 2011Whenever I'm copying something big, or installing a large update, or doing something else that takes a lot from the hard drive, my entire system slows down. Now, I realize that this is inevitable due to limited resources, but the heavy hard drive work is usually low-priority, background stuff.
Is it possible to assign hard drive activity a low priority value, similar to renicing processes on the CPU?
Ubuntu One :: Connect Activity - Uploading Folders Instead Of Files?
Jan 30, 2010Whenever I used to start up a window would open asking me for my password. No problem. One day I clicked cancel and it has never come up again, when i start up the ubuntu one logo switches to updating folders for a bit and then it switches to the default but with a little red x on it. I haven't been able to get it to connect. I can place files into the folder on my computer but they don't show in my ubuntu one account folder also. Also I heard, that soon we'd be able to upload folders instead of file by file is this true?

Mar 4, 2010As part of a standard update from Update Mgr, I was proposed an upgrade from kernel 2.6.31.19 (pae) to 2.6.31.20 (again, pae). Installation went smoothly, as a number of similar upgrades before. Machine is a plain dual/boot (win7+karmic), no wubi.
Mandatory reboot after upgrade... grub... then freeze.
Deep freeze: blank screen, no HD activity.
None of the existing kernel flavors (2.6.31-17, 31-19, 31-20) is able to boot, either in pae, general or recovery mode. It's only BIOS sequence, grub, choice... frozen. Blank screen, no message whatsoever. (btw, win7 boot appears not affected)
Attempts so far:
* Following some hints here for similar situations, I checked my disk w/ gparted and found no issues.
* Partition's UUID is nicely set.
* Recovered Grub, as per its tutorial...
I'm attaching here my grub's config, from a script I've seen in multiple questions.
