Ubuntu :: Thunderbird Sends Mail Only When Started By Root?
Dec 23, 2010
I have 2 email accounts set up in Thunderbird - one is gmail and the other was given me by our server admins few years ago. Everything works fine on windows but when I try to send something from the second account (not gmail) in ubuntu it says that password is incorrect. Ive double checked all settings and seems like everything set correct. Now the most interesting part: when I set up this account as root (gksu thunderbird and then do same as I did under my account) everything works perfect.
I found only one thread at this forum with same issue and sure it's not solved [URL]..

The scenario: We have an external server that runs HTTP/DB servers for out shop system. Then, there's our local, in-house infrastructure that runs a.. yeah... Exchange 2010. The shop system on the external server needs to send mails to customers (order confirmations, invoices, etc.). seing as sending them directly through the local MTA (Postfix) would cause mail delivery problems because of reverse DNS issues, i've set the Postfix MTA to act as a satellite to our in-house Exchange Server, so the Exchange sends the mail instead, giving recipient mail servers a valid reverse DNS lookup.
Now, mails sent by the (proprietary, uneditable) shop system are relayed correctly and sent to the target e-mail address. My problem is: Mails not sent by the shop system, but by our own PHP scripts which run on that same external servers, are NOT relayed properly. So the Exchange is fine with the mails sent by the shop system, but not the mails sent by our scripts. This is what i get in the mail.log: The successfully relayed mail sent by the shop system:

It's hard to understand the whole systemd stuff. Specially in combination with mdadm and sendmail. My goal is to get a mail every boot about the state of the RAID. Also get a mail when someone is wrong with the RAID while my computer is running. How I can reach this target I don't care especially. It just has to be a Debian package and stable
OK, to the story: I made a while ago an dist-upgrade from wheezy to jessie. Before, everything works fine. I boot my computer, the RAID gets checked and a mail was sent to my email-address with the state of my RAID and the disks of it. For this I followed a HowTo from [URL] .... After the upgrade, I dont get a mail anymore.
Here some details.
Actually installed: Debian 8.2 Jessie
Code: Select allsystemctl status mdadm-raid -l
● mdadm-raid.service - LSB: MD array assembly
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/mdadm-raid)
Active: active (exited) since Son 2015-10-11 16:11:34 CEST; 21min ago
Process: 281 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/mdadm-raid start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
Okt 11 16:11:34 xy-server mdadm-raid[281]: Generating udev events for MD arrays...done.
[Code] ....
When I execute
Code: Select allecho "This is a test e-mail from my server using msmtp" | msmtp -d xyz@gmx.net
or
Code: Select allmdadm --monitor --scan --test --oneshot
Everything works. I get the mails like I need it. In my opinion it's not a problem of the mail configuration. It seems, there is no network when the RAID get's started and the mails want to be send.
What I'm wondering is also, that obviously the
/etc/default/mdadm
is ignored by systemd and only the
/lib/systemd/system/mdmonitor.service is executed. But while booting the RAID get's startet with /etc/init.d/mdadm-raid and this should read the /etc/default/mdadm. Right? Confusing!
Anyway, is there a way, how I can easy change the order (without any side-effects) of the startup for the network and the RAID. I can't figure out, which unit I have to change, that it will work. Or maybe is there another solution? Like I mentioned, it's just have to work with Debian stable packages
There are various units who sounds nice, but wich one is the correct one?
Network:
- network-online.target
- network.target
- system-ifup.slice
- ifup@eth0.service
Disks:
- local-fs.target
- mdadm-raid.service
- mdmonitor.service
- -.mount
And how can I be sure, that every dependency of the network units doesn't depend on a filesystem unit?

I'm new here and I'm sure this question has been thrown around a lot but I just couldn't find a solution. I have a networking website I've setup and we need to send notification mails to our members depending on activity related to their profiles(messages, comments etc).We are hosting the site on Centos5.6 with VirtualMin and are using Postfix as our MTA. We also use google apps for email on the site. Heres the problem, the mails go through for some gmail users but more often than not, they end up in gmail, hotmail and yahoo spam. We've setup the appropriate SPF codes on the server, DKIM and rDNS works fine.v=spf1 ip4:xx.xx.xx.xx a mx include:_spf.google.com ~all Below is a sample email that goes directly into gmail spam. I've replaced the actual values with dummy text (Ip, Domain etc)
Delivered-To: my.email@gmail.com

I have set up postfix and dovecot as per the Ubuntu anual and appear to have a functioning mail server.Using the sendmail command I can send mail and I receive mail in ~/Maildir. Using Thunderbird I can read any mails received but I can't send any mail from Thunderbird. I have tried with both STARTTLS and SSL/TLS and whilst I get the prompt for a password I keep getting the message my password for my server is wrong.I have ports 25, 465, 587 and 993. Is that all the right ports? When I ping my domain name it resolves to my router name whereas I believe it should resolve to my IP. Could there be a problem with my host file? I've had a play but to no avail. Here's the error in mail.log.
Code:

My server is opensuse 11.1 I recently wrote a small script to quickly shut down or reboot my server (I needed this because I need to close an application manually before shutting down. The shutdown line in the script was: /sbin/shutdown -r now When I tested the script (as root) from the console terminal, It worked just fine but after reboot strange things started to happen if I logged in as root - while the mouse works, the keyboard freezes (rebooting the server does not help). While I can still use console terminal, if I try to start any application that requires root permission or log in as root from my sftp client then I will get an error on the server that says; broadcast message from root (time & date), the system is going down for reboot now! I have since commented out level 6 in my inittab, so that now when root sends a reboot signal and It shows the message about going to reboot, it does not actually go into reboot anymore because of the commented out line but that is ofcourse not an healthy way to go about it.

I have a ubuntu server 9.10 installed with exim4 as MTA. I configured a mail address on it (let's say me@example.com). Before i had it working i had a other email configured (let's say me_2@example.com). At the time i had this one it didn't work i removed exim4.
Now i can successfully send mails with it by the configured me@example.com. I also configured the password for this, but when i receive the mail the old configured mail is presented as "from" (so from: me_2@example.com).
Anyone knows how this can be changed so it says the mail is from me@example.com? The mail is not an alias, and in a mail client they work separately.

I just added my login id to /etc/aliases to forward root's local e-mail to my local e-mail account in evolution.
As always, when I make a change to /etc/aliases, I run newaliases. I now get the following, and root's mail is not showing up in my local mail Inbox:
Code:
Is this correct?
I understand my hostname (i.e., Eng-Lab-010) is not a fully qualified host name, but I never had a problem before. But it appears this not a good thing. What should I do?

when I try to do admin tasks - e.g. setting my wireless connection to "available to all users" or updating a group's settings - it asks for "password for root" rather than asking for my password so it can sudo.I was forced to enable the root password, so I could do anything on my system ( sudo su; passwd; ) but I'd rather keep my root password locked and use sudo if possible.

The question is pretty much the same as the subject. I have a bunch of debian servers - most of them running exim4 default installations configured as internet site using dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config. It can send mails fine from php scripts and some other applications, but I can't seem to find a way to forward all root mail to some external address. I have tried adding "root: someaddress@example.com" to /etc/aliases and run newaliases command, but it doesn't seem to work.

- Firefox 3.6.8 (64 bit)
- Get Mail extension (v3.3.4),
- Thunderbird (3.1.1)
Problem:
Clicking "Read Mail" does nothing, whereas clicking "Compose Message" opens Thunderbird as expected. Thunderbird is properly configured under "System Settings > Default Apps > Email Client".
Whereas, switching the default email client back to Kmail results in the Get Mail "read mail" and "compose message" functions properly opening Kmail in both instances.
This problem occurred for me before (when using openSUSE v11.1 and earlier versions of the apps), but I don't recall how I eventually solved it, or whether it was resolved via an update of one of the above apps/extensions. Nonetheless, I'm now confronted by the very same problem again.

I have 5 mailboxes provided by my ISP, which I have been using since 2005 with IMAP.1 month ago my Thunderbird client under both 9.04 (desktop) and 9.10 (laptop) started refusing to delete any incoming mail in one of my mailboxes (but not in the other 4).
Error message: "(...) Mail server responded: System I/O Error" 1 week ago, same problem for another mailbox (but not for the other 3), again affecting both machines. Evolution does delete incoming mail on these 2 mailboxes, no issues at all. Have googled, found only one solution (imap folder corrupt), but nothing makes sense.

Ok, so I've done a clean install of 10.04 over 9.1 and despite a couple of issues am very impressed. The thing that's currently bugging me most is that I can't set the chat/mail/broadcast panel menu thing to use thunderbird for mail. Is there any way to do this, or do I need to have thunderbird as a separate icon?

is there a way you can set up mail, so that it functions as thunderbird? for example, in thunderbird, you could create a hotmail email account, and add a new account to thunderbird with your hotmail username, password and if i recall well, smtp and server port. if that is not possible, what do i have to do be able to send emails from console in general? i ve seen some guides online which i think they are deprecated or something, cause the steps they suggest dont actually correspond to what you really have to do. what would be the simplest way to send email from console?

Would anyone have a recommendation for a Thunderbird extension or add-on for importing e-mail from Live Mail? I have a dual installation of win7 & Ubuntu 10.04. Ultimately, I want to import my e-mail archive into Thunderbird on the Ubuntu partition. For the transition, I have both Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail on the win7 side. I'm running Thunderbird 3.0.6, though I could upgrade.

I'm run 10.10 desktop x64 and when I start setting up an account in thunerbird and enter name, email address and password in the first window and go on to the next next that window flashes pop and imap very quickly before stopping with a showing of imap. There is no edit button and I have not been able to find out how to set the protocol to pop3. Is there and error? Or am I missing something. I like thunderbird and would like to continue using it but my email providers only support pop3. I'm writing to this list because I'm thinking the problem may be specific to my version of ubuntu but I'm not sure.

I store all my personal files inclduing mail folders on my external usb drive which allows me to experiment with different distros freely. On each new install i point the mail settings to my mozilla folder. But Slackware 13 is throwing a lot of challenges my way. I am currently finding that I cannot copy recently arrived mail into my designated folders. The message says something about I am running out of disk space when in fact I have plenty of space.
I initially thought it might have something to do with file permissions. But definitely not in this case. The folder is owned by myself and has full permissions chmod 775.I am currently using windows which gives access to all my mail folders.
