Ubuntu :: Terrible Sound Latency With Some Programs

May 15, 2010

It's an eMachines T2899 desktop, FIC AU31 motherboard, nForce2 chipset, AC97 sound (integrated), running Xubuntu 10.04 (wubi install), 2.6.32-22.I've got terrible sound latency (about one second between actions and sound) in some programs.Flash in both firefox and chrome (including ..... videos) and ZSNES (SNES emulator) are two offenders, as is Audacity.Videos played in the default "movie player" and VLC play with no delay, though.I've been told it could be an issue with the ALSA buffer size, or pulseaudio introducing latency... but I've no clue how to go about fixing it.Upon using the SNES9X emulator (which allows for choice of sound system)... Portaudio causes laggy emulation and bad sound latency. Open Sound System plays fine. SDL causes laggy emulation and bad sound latency. ALSA plays fine. Pulse Audio plays fine."sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio" did nothing, so I reinstalled it just in case.

Ubuntu :: Rhythmbox Terrible At Fetching Lyrics

May 26, 2010

I was wondering if there were any way of adding or changing where Rhythmbox gets its lyrics from as it never finds lyrics for any of the songs I listen to, making it a rather useless feature. If I recall correctly, Songbird was much better at actually getting hold of lyrics for songs I listen to, so is it possible to switch to whatever site Songbird (possibly a plugin for Songbird rather than it being native) gets its lyrics from? (Also, I just realised I posted this in the wrong section)

Ubuntu :: Skype Configuration - No Sound For Other Programs

Jan 4, 2010

I'm on Ubuntu Karmic, and running Skype 2.0.0.72 -- since I couldn't get the latest version to work with my USB microphone. If I have Skype running, no other programs will produce sound (i.e. Amarok, VLC, flash in the browser, etc.). If any of those programs are active when I start Skype, Skype will fail to produce sound & won't work properly. Is there a way I can allow side-by-side usage of Skype and my other audio-producing programs, since all my other programs seem to get along just fine when it comes to sharing audio?

Audio Devices in Skype in case it will help:
Sound In: USB Device 0x471:0x311 (hw:U0x4710x311,0)
Sound Out: C-Media CMI8770 (plughw:CMI8770,0)
Ringing: C-Media CMI8770 (plughw:CMI8770,0)

Again, both my current Skype configuration & sound in general programs works on my system -- they're just not playing well with each other.

Debian :: SOund Working In Some Programs But Not Others

Nov 19, 2010

After the latest update in testing, I found sound not to be working. I checked system config in KDE and found the wrong sound card set there. I changed it to the correct sound card, sound now works in some programs and not others (IE, Dragon Player and Amarok have sound, Kaffeine and Iceweasel do not).Sound does not work through the on board sound card.System beep sounds (through the onboard speaker) also fail to work.I've had similar problems in the past due to the inability to turn off the onboard sound, alsaconf has always fixed them, however debian has removed alsaconf from alsa-utils.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Sound Only Works For Certain Programs

Apr 7, 2010

it's been a LONG time since I've used Fedora (I think 6 was the last I used) and I decided to check things out. Installed the LiveCD KDE respin x86_64 version. Once the installation was done, I installed the yum fastest mirror plugin, then did a yum update. I then yum installed firefox, and used the autoten script to install Flash-plugin, Mp3-codecs, Dvd-codecs, and All-codecs. I then installed amarok and tried playing a song. There was no sound, and the slider moved at least twice as fast as it should have. I then attempted to play a video file with VLC. The video played fine, but there was still no sound. Firefox seems to be the only program that plays sound properly, as both ..... and pandora play fine. Konqueror however does not play sound on ......This seems to me like a 64-bit related issue since I think firefox has all the 32 bit libraries for flash to work, but like I said, I've been out of this scene for a while now.

Debian :: Flashplugin-nonfree Terrible Performance / No Spike In CPU

Jun 3, 2011

II installed flashplayer by every different method I can so far, and all of them have the same problem. This problem presents itself, for example, while playing a video on ...... As the video loads, flashplayer is fine, but as soon as it starts playing, the browser tab begins to run at roughly 1 frame per 10 seconds. When I turn the browser priority to maximum in System Monitor, it improves slightly, going to about 1 frame per second. The strange part is, my CPU and memory usage barely spike at all, to less than 30%. This happens regardless of browser (have tried iceweisel and chrome). It happens with hardware acceleration on, and off. I have tried installing flashplayer from the tar.gz on the adobe website, from the repository (all three packages), and manually placing the plugin in the browser myself. The issue presents itself the same every time.

My system specs are: 1.83GHz duel core intel centrino processor, 3GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600. Nothing fancy, but flash player performs as flawlessly as flashplayer can under windows (and also performed well in my previous Ubuntu 10.04LL install).

Debian Configuration :: Intel GM45 Terrible Performance.

Jun 7, 2010

Ok first off, I love debian, but on my new notebook I am getting a little frustrated with the terrible, video performance.Direct rendering is enabled on both systems, and openGL is working (I can if I wanted to use compiz etc...) fine on both systems, just running slow on debian.

I have tried Lenny, Squeeze and Sid, I have compiled the intel driver (and Mesa3D) from git and got it working (I am sure its working because its given me a slight boost), I ahve also tried building the latest stable (and RC2) kernel. If I install ubuntu 9.10 I get pretty decent 3D performance, its not ground breaking, but hey its an intel chipset so I am not expecting to kick the latest nvidia / ati card's backside.I really dont want to use ubuntu, I find it unstable when compaired to debian, but I also want to be able to play the odd game when I am bored, and at the moment I just cant do that under debian

Fedora Networking :: Having Terrible Time Getting IP Address For Eth0

Dec 19, 2009

I am trying to get networking up on an old PII which I have successfully installed with FC4. There is a link and activity on the onboard interface because I see the indicator lights. The controller is a 3Com PCI 3c905 Boomerang 100baseTx @ 0xdc80.The only message returned by dmesg about eth0 is "Dropping NETIF_F_SG since no checksum feature."The driver module, 3c59x, is loaded as well as the mii module that depends on it.There is something about "unknown parameter`irq'" in the dmesg text regarding the driver.I noticed that eth0 is sharing an IRQ with the UHCI Host Controller. That should not be a problem, but it should not be necessary. And I could do away with USB if this is a conflict and that is the easiest way to solve it.When I drop to console at runlevel 3, and call dhclient, which is installed, I get a message telling me there is no reply to the dhcp request.I don't think the problem is on the router/switch side.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Screen Fonts And Colors Also Look Terrible Compared To Windows / Ubuntu

Jul 14, 2010

I have used Ubuntu and Linux Mint for quite some time now until I got a new machine. Some friends told me to try OpenSUSE because it has really been polished over the last few years.Install went smoothly got everything working properly except for my video card. My video card is an ATI HD4890 with sound support over HDMI. I had the sound working in Ubuntu using the non-oss ATI drivers. I was wondering if someone could please teach me how to install them again here on OpenSUSE 11.3. My screen fonts and colors also look terrible compared to Windows or Ubuntu.

Is there a way I can make it look better? I remember CCC (Catalyst Control Center for ATI) had two color formats (RGB and YCbCr). I had to set it to YCbCr because my screen is an HDTV and it looked much cleaner than RGB. Is there a way I can acheive similar results with OpenSUSE?

Ubuntu Networking :: Long Latency On LAN Between 10.14 LTS Servers

Jun 8, 2011

we are setuping high-performance web farm with 4 ubuntu servers (all 10.14 LTS 64bit, i5Core CPU, 16GB Ram). One server is "database" server with mysql installed, three servers are "webservers" with tomcat installed. All three webservers have public IP and are connected directly to internet by eth0 (onboard network card) and are connected to switch that is connected to database server by eth1 (pci network card). All servers has stardard instalation with no special modules/programes installed.

Web servers are already under load, but only on about 10 requests/minute. After several hours in production, strange thing happened - one of the web servers (each time another one, so it is happening to all of them but not at once) starts to have pings to database (that is connected directly on LAN) = 100ms (other two servers still has like 0,02ms). Pings stay high until we do /etc/init.d/networking restart, after that it is fixed and pins are again low again. Another strange think is, that when we let ping running for some time, it is slowly dropping from 100ms to 1 ms and then again jumps to 100ms (exactly to 100ms always) and again starts dropping - so it is cycling over and over again (one cycle takes about 2 minutes).

We were trying reconfigure network, play with switch (the same situation was happening even without switch when there was only one webserver and one database server directly connected), disable IPv6 but nothing helped. The only thing that we discovered is that it has to be caused by network configuration.Do you have any idea what can cause it? We went through systems logs but found nothing suspicious (at least according to our understanding).

I'm getting close to ordering the components for a new machine based on the AMD Deneb quad core and had one last question.I'd like to try a little careful overclocking, not only for the performance increase but also to learn how. Nothing extreme, no gaming, just whatever I can get with good stability with the stock heatsink and fan.I was going to get 8GB on 2x4GB strips but they are all CAS latency 9. The MB has 4 slots for a total of 16GB capacity. Would I be better off going with 4x2GB strips and try to get a lower latency strip like maybe 7?

Ubuntu :: Low Latency And Realtime Kernels Boot To A Command Prompt?

I just installed Maverick Studio on a new hard drive, and am using an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE GPU. If I boot into the 2.6.35-22-generic kernel, everything runs fine, but if I try to boot into either the 2.6.35-20-Low Latency, or 2.6.33-29-Realtime kernels (installed from Synaptic), the computer boots straight to a command prompt instead of the desktop. Does anybody know what causes this? I need to be able to use one of these kernels for doing music production.

Ubuntu Networking :: Massive Latency/unreachable On Wired Network?

Dec 15, 2010

I'm experiencing massive latency/unreachable problems on my Linux machine. It's true for all network connections, here's an example of me trying to ping my router:

PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=15115 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=14107 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=13107 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=4 ttl=64 time=12107 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=5 ttl=64 time=11108 ms

[Code]...

I've tried now with both the maverick default kernel and 2.6.37-rc5 kernel (both 64 bit), same result. If I take the card up and down (ifup, ifdown) performance is restored for a little while, then it's back. I've tried changing cable, network card and router port but no luck.

Debian :: Get Latency Down When Calling Aptitude And Dpkg?

Jun 20, 2011

I tend to use commands like 'aptitude search $something' or 'dpkg -S /usr/bin/command' (some command/variable in both) or 'apt-file search $something' and all/or many of its brethen. I do run updatedb every now and then but that command is for the overall health of the system similar to tracker perhaps (but not running continously like tracker and the daemon).

What I'm looking for is, if there is a way to get the package list (installed and otherwise) updated aggressively so that whenever I use any combination of aptitude or dpkg I get better response from the system. From what little I understand, aptitude or dpkg or somewhere there would be some sort of index/database where the current state of package availability and system state would be recorded. If there is a way that this could be improved upon would be nice to know. If there is some experimental package or road which the debian folks are looking for in the future so this latency can come down.
