So I recently installed Linux mint 64 bit version, and when I play certain songs, and it hits a certain bass, it crackles and pops. A lot. And I have tried a lot, but cannot figure it out. Any ideas? Musics fine on windows :/
View 1 RepliesI just got my hands on an MSI E7235-295US and slapped Ubuntu 9.10 on it. So far everything's worked great, but I am beginning to get a bit concerned about my sound quality. The laptop itself has 5 speakers + subwoofer so I should be getting 5.1 sound, if I understand things correctly (the newegg link should provide more details) and when I play anything (music, flash, videos, games, etc...) the sound comes out 'muffled'. Almost as if it is in a concert hall, maybe. I initially wondered if the problem is related to the 5 speakers and if the sound is initially only setup for two. If that is the case, nothing I've done has seemed to made any real difference. I've tried changing the master/pci channels, but it only hides it a little, and doesn't solve the problem.
This seemed to be on the right track, but the laptop is still really new and not listed in the alsa file.

After installing Catalyst with VA-API began a strange problem with the sound via HDMI. Prior to installing the sound worked fine. Platform: MSI E350IA-E45 with Radeon HD 6310 and AMD Zacate E350 Version of Catalyst 11.4. After installing the sound is playing with a terrible noise Sample: [URL]... View 2 Replies View RelatedSince I installed Natty recently, I had this "popping" sound from the speakers when the laptop was running on battery. Turns out this popping has to do with a power-saving feature for "hda-intel" sound-chips.
Open terminal and do:

gksudo gedit /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/intel-audio-powersave
Find this line:
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}
And comment it out by putting a "#" in front of it like this:
# INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}
Just below this line you make a new line, like this:
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=false
So now you will have:
# INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=false
Save the file (File > Save) and exit.
Reboot the computer.
The popping sound will be gone.
If you for some reason need to undo the setting, just open the file again and remove the "#" from:
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}
And delete this line:
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=false
Save the file.
Reboot.
I did a clean install to 10.04. Not too many issues except any sound I play sounds like it's underwater and pops while playing. I have tried to do the Pulse Audio install, but every time I loaded pauvcontrol (I think was the title), it would pop up "Connection Failure: Connection Refused." I tried to follow other guides, but they'd all fail because I'd be missing half of the files it changed. I have a Creative Labs X-Fi Fatality card that has given me troubles in the past, but usually, it works. I tried to install Creative's open driver, but again, I had an error when I attempted to Make the directory.
View 6 Replies View RelatedLoud popping sound approx. 11 secs after switching to battery power if audio hasnt been used for awhile (11 secs probably?) It will pop when audio is started (like movie, alert etc etc). It appears to be a power saving problem. And is not occurring for me on other distros, and only started happening recently on OpenSuSE. I found the exact same problem on the OpenSuSE forums dated 2008 (see: [URL]) but no solution as of yet. And by loud popping sound imagine one of those 'black cat' snappers you throw on the ground and they pop, it sounds almost identical.

I have put my record collection onto disc (Ubuntu+Audacity+Rythmbox) I would now like to play the MP3 files through my Hi-Fi. Is there a "media player" unit that can connect to a MONITOR? Note I do NOT have a TV and it looks as though these using can only connect via TV. I presume a cheap laptop would do the job but would I get Hi Fi quality sound by connecting one?

I have previous use karmic koala and the version before that (cant remember the name for that) on my old computer and now I am using ubuntu 10.4 on my new computer. Ever since I installed Ubuntu for the first time, I noticed that the sound quality wasn't... the best. There isn't so much wrong with it, but like that this example. I played a FLAC file with some headphones (thru Ubuntu) and the sound quality sucked.. and then I played a mp3 file (with an ipod) and the sound quality was much much much better than the FLAC file.
I tired to play an HD movie over ....., where on Windows XP it sounds perfect, but with Ubuntu it kinda sux. The MP3 (Ipod / windows XP) is still better, than anything that is being played in Ubuntu. This is with almost every sound format I have tried. No matter if I play it with Rythmbox or vlc or some other player, the sound is wrong. I cant describe how it sounds.. but it is like it is going with a low frequency... or it is compress some how... Ever since I tried Ubuntu for the first time Ive noticed that something was wrong, but couldn't never really put my finger on it. I have dual-booted with windows XP and the sound in XP is really, really good compared to Ubuntu.
The quality of sound I am getting is very poor with lots of noises.I'm using openSUSE 11.4 on a DELL Inspiron 6400, and the sound is "82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller".I have tried removing pulseaudio but it did not change anything.I had no problem with the sound on 11.2 and the quality of sound is normal on Windows.

I have an Asus A8N-E ACPI BIOS Revision 1013 Motherboard (which has a built in Realtek AC'97 soundcard).
My video card is NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO
I am running Slackware 12.2, KDE 3.5, Kernel 2.6.27.31.
My problem is: Sound quality when only playing song files through xmms, songbrid, Amarok, etc... is garbled. Although games, Movies, DvD's, Video files, all sound through that media is perfect and clear.
I have already used Slackware 13, KDE 4.2.2 and I thought the problem was with KDE 4+ so I reinstalled to Slackware 12.2 and KDE 3.5. Everything was working great until I installed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53 driver so my video card works like it should and games work under Wine.
But I am at a loss on how I can get the soundcard working. I suspect something within the NVIDIA driver is conflicting with my soundcard.
I have worked the whole day to get an multimedia player that plays all format's. After trying vlc, realplayerGold, Xine, Kaffeine, Rhythmbox and Totem, I ended up at kaffeine.

It seems I can play at least an mpeg movie, and mp3. But I find the quality of sound of the mp3 in kaffeine very poor. Yes, it plays, but some mp3's are struggling the first 10 seconds or so,, eg, Shivers - Armin van Buuren. When I play the same mp3 in xmms, it plays like a charm. That's not what I want, I want an all-round multimedia player. Xine does the job very well,, like xmms,, and plays also the mpeg, but unfortunately, xine shows an error message about a segmentation fault, upon exiting xine. Any hint to play mp3 files in kaffeine like xmms does?
So far i have tried ubuntu. seems great however i've had trouble with internet connection and soundcard problems. (slow internet connection and poor sound quality. I was thinking of trying kubuntu. Do you think i'll have the same problems?

In ubuntu when I'm playing music, primarily when the subwoofer plays the bass, the speakers sound like they're farting and ripping phone books in half. Also, they get very statticy and sort of quiet. In sound preferences, analog stereo duplex is selected, if that's of any value. How can I get good sound playback in ubuntu?

So, I bought a cheap USB soundcard. I plugged it in, it was recognized and worked immediately. But the sound quality was horrible. Next, I bought some reasonably expensive Logitech USB headphones. They also immediately worked. The sound quality is a bit better, but still bad. One weird thing is that the audio quality improves with increasing CPU usage.What is also interesting is that the sound quality is perfect with bluetooth headphones. So the jitter really seems to be associated with snd_usb_audio somehow. But I have no idea what to do about.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop is a Dell Inspiron 510m with onboard Intel 855 sound (STAC 9750 AC97). The sound was perfect with WinXP, but with Ubuntu it's tinny and lacks richness and vibrates and distorts at higher volumes. I've played around with Alsamixer and changed the driver from ALSA to OSS4 and it has improved slightly, but still not perfect. Is it just not gonna get any better, should I not be expecting it to be as good as WinXP?
I've seen on the Intel site a Linux driver for my controller, it's a tarball but it won't compile after extracting it (read on this forum that someone had the exact same problem with that driver). Will the Intel driver not help, does the problem go deeper than just the driver? It would be perfect it you could just wrap the Dell/Intel driver and use that (just like with wireless ndiswrapper).
Does anyone notice a degradation in sound quality with skype and pulseaudio? It seems that when I use pulseaudio there are bugs in the sound quality in skype. I also notice a lag when talking to someone with the VoIP feature.

If I play the same ..... video on Ubuntu and then on the Vbox WinXP machine the difference is startling. It sounds beautiful on the WinXP machine. Is there any way to improve the sound quality on Ubuntu? When I play the video (any video) on Ubuntu there is a lot of static noise to contend with.

When I got to the desktop, I tried to play music, but no sound came-out.So, I tried to uninstall the plugins I installed yesterday and restarted. I got similar errors in the console-text as earlier.When my desktop loaded, I still had no sound. View 1 Replies View RelatedI just started to play with ssh so I connected to my media-pc with ssh from my laptop. I was always able to start a music player and play the music on the media-pc. Since yesterday the sound is gone. When I do top on the mediapc, I see my player running.
When I open my player locally on the mediapc, I can hear the music.
I think the sound disappeared after a update, but maybe it disappeared because I opened a player locally (on the mediapc) I don't know.
The laptop and mediapc both use a fully updated 9.10
update: when I connect from mediapc to laptop, I can play music on my laptop
I switched to Thunar as my file manager and now banshee and rhythmbox play without sound. I had a similar problem but was fixed by adding pulseaudio & to my fluxbox start up file. code...

When playing the Java based Game "Runescape", I am able to get the game music, but absolutely no sound effects or scenery sound. I have checked that all are at maximum volume, my sound works for everything else I do in total - this includes skype, ..... and minecraft - but not for the sounds in runescape.
I can copy and paste into a terminal, but that is about it.
