I have an icon theme going, and when using 'gnome-terminal', the window of the terminal uses the icon from the theme. When using 'xfce4-terminal' however (which I prefer, given how I now run xfce), the window uses its own icon (that draws a large dollar sign in the middle of a black monitor) and simply ignores the terminal icon from the theme.
I would like to rectify this disturbing matter
I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
Is there a way to set a default terminal window size when I click on the "Terminal" icon? I need my terminal to be of a certain size every time I click on it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop computer and a NAS, running Kubuntu & Ubuntu. I use WOL to wake the NAS and then mount the drives (NFS) on my desktop.
I've placed an icon on my KDE desktop which wakes the NAS and mounts the drives, this works great, but I've set it to run in terminal so I can enter the password for mounting the drives. This leaves me with an open window which I don't want to close because the NAS is set to shutdown 15 minutes after ssh logout.
My question is how can I minimize the open terminal window to an icon on my taskbar?
I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.
i'm not sure for using the correct channel here but i hope someone out there can answer my little questions. 1st in older version i was able to change the settings of the terminal look as the font color, background color and so on. I was also able to define a default window size of a new terminal window. But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Is there a way how to set up the terminal default window size?

View 9 Replies View Relatedrecently i made a bold move to slackware (13.1) i have set it out how i like (gdm, themes etc) but my xfce icon box does come up showing the icons i have chosen the rest look how i want but just not icon box, i add (always into usr/share...) i have tried editing the .theme files with the inherit= section but nope still nothing ,
if i move the icons to somewhere the pc wont use them nothing replaces them. any ideas as this an boot times are all have left to do for my "dream install"
I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.
1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel?
2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts
3) Enter: regina fv2
I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.
Newly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.

If I can't get the samba config window is there a way I can configure in terminal window?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI really a newbie to xfce. I was using gnome 2 orignally then since I'm using Arch Linux (64-bit), it was updated to Gnome 3. After long weeks of daily use, I didn't like gnome 3. Now, I decided to use xfce. I did a fresh install (after formatting my hdd) of Arch, I put installed XFCE + SLIM login manager. Almost all works fine until I decided to install Compiz. After installing Compiz, for some reason gtk-window-decorator --replace (the one that you put under CCSM > Window Decoration > Command) does not work. Only "emerald --replace" and "kde4-window-decorator --replace" works. Unfortunately, I don't like emerald. When I run gtk-window-decorator --replace in the terminal it gives me this error:

gtk-window-decorator: error while loading shared libraries: libmetacity-private.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I made sure I installed the complete compiz+gtk package from pacman. BTW, I never had a problem with gnome 2 + compiz + gtk-window-decorator. I don't know if I have to do something extra in xfce to make gtk-window-decorator work.
EDIT: FYI, I use fusion-icon as an autostart application for me to automatically start compiz during startup.
When starting Xfce, there's a ~50% chance that the theme (no matter which one) doesn't work properly and all the window frames are black. Sometimes it does work, but I can't reproduce either - it's random.
I've had this problem before on 13.1 and somehow managed to make it disappear (I switched from KDE and blamed it on me not getting all the settings right immediately). However, after installing 13.37 and starting with a clean homedir, it happens more often that it did on 13.1 and I just can't get rid of it.
PS: The whole Slackware / X11 / Xfce setup is fairly generic, but I do use the binary Nvidia driver from SBo and I have two TFTs configured as separate X11 screens.

I've been using Slackware for about five years but I've never been bothered about compiz so it's all a bit new to me. Since I installed Slackware 13 (64bit) yesterday I noticed that compiz is one of the pre-installed packages so I thought I'd give it a blast.
I should probably have done a bit more research but I read on a forum that running "compiz --replace" will replace the default window manager with compiz so I gave it a try. The problem is that now none of my windows have borders so I can't move them or do anything. The worst part about the whole affair is that I can't even figure out how to revert to whatever the old window manager was.
EDIT : Just thought I'd add that I'm using XFCE.
EDIT++ : I've managed to revert the window manager by deleting my .cache directory. XFCE obviously maintainted the apps that were running and one of them was compiz. Now just to figure out how I can get compiz working. I presume emerald is the key...
I often swapped window managers between fluxbox kde and gnome back when I ran ubuntu to suit my needs. When I installed slackware, I picked KDE because of the convenient app suite. I don't wish to uninstall kde but I'd like to be able to pick which environment I use when I swap to a GUI. Something like a flag, startx --fluxbox.
View 2 Replies View RelatedGood day! Just finished setting up my 11.04 home server this week. Installed GNOME initially and ended up not feeling it (a bit too slow for VNC on my Atom box). Performed sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop and then installed xfce.
Now, I can't use tab-complete in any Terminal app in xfce when using VNC to access the box. It still works properly over SSH. Have ensured that all lines referring to auto-complete are un-commented in the following:
/etc/profile
/etc/bash.bashrc
~/.bashrc
I have verified that bash_completion is installed (reinstalled using Synaptic just to be sure). It seemed to work intermittently when I changed the above config files but has reverted back to not functioning anymore.
Is there a way to FULLY maximize the Xfce Terminal (or GNOME Terminal) under Xfce? It will only maximize to the nearest whole line for me.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use squeeze + xfce + an nvidia gtx 460. With both the stable and sid nvidia driver, window redrawing in xfce is really slow. This isn't a problem in gnome. An example of this is having man windows open, filling up the screen, and then taking another window and moving it around the screen on top of the other windows - it slides around the screen slowly like those old dvd player screensavers, leaving a long trail in its wake. I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas on how to remedy this. Turning on compositing fixes the problem, but that is not an option for me as xfce's compositing creates massive screen tearing while using vdpau. I should also add that this wasn't an issue when I was using Gentoo and xfce.

In my Ubuntu 10.4, there's no icon but a small black radio bullet instead. (I already moved the button order to a more traditional one: "menu:minimize,maximize,close") How can I get the window icon back there? I installed udiskie, modified fstab, and finally got it working, but somewhere in the process, my terminal emulator just... died. Now, when I try to launch it, I get this error message: "" (I think I can translate that as Failed to execute child... process? not quite sure) "getpt failed: Not such file or directory." So far, I've been looking but couldn't find anything similar anywhere. also: this happens with all the terminal emulators I've tried (Terminal, gnome-terminal, sonata), except for xterm... which does just nothing: doesn't launch or send error messages.

With it, I can add a shortcut menu and a Stack icon. From there,I can add applications, but they have a generic *.desktop icon. 1. About 6 of the icons normally residing in the top half of Settings Manager are missing (names are their and functions work). Selecting 'Appearance -> Icons' and re-selecting the one choice available restores one, the rest remain MIA.
2. Default xfce Terminal launch fails with error <????> Re-selecting the default 'Preferred Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal -> Xfce Terminal' has no effect. 'Properties' shows the usual 'exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator'.
Setting 'Preferred Applications' to 'X Terminal' launches an xterm successfully as expected.
When you go to System/Preferences/Appearance/ and the Appearance Preferences window displays the graphical representations of the themes, on most of them the gnome image-missing.png is displayed where the window menu icon (far-left on the titlebar) should be displayed. I never had this happen with Intrepid, but I do have this situation now on Jaunty. It's not just with new or added themes, it's the system's default installed themes as well. If you search around the net you'll see that this is a pretty common problem. Is a .png getting deleted, or is it something else in the process that is 'broken'?
Many of my apps display their proper menu window icons (like nautilus, ff3, etc.) - but others do not. I used a custom firefox icon (included in hydroxygen theme) in jaunty. Now, in karmic, the window icon is stuck with the default firefox icon. I managed to get the gnome menu and panel icons to change by sim-linking to my desired icons and naming the links "firefox-3.5.png" I can see my custom icon when I first start Firefox, when the "starting firefox" window appears in the tasklist. After the main window is up, the icon reverts to the default icon.If you don't know what I mean here's a screenshot where I have an already-opened window alongside an opening window. I would like the window to use the icon in the instance on the right.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'd imagine I sound like a complete clown but I am completely new to ubunto and linux in general. Having "fiddled around with it" for a matter of weeks I am finding generally I am quite pleased and am taking my time sorting through the chaff. Talking of chaff I have a problem from downloading a program previously which turned out to be unnecessary. Avast, I have removed the program and associated files but for some reason an Icon remains in the applications box at the bottom, not in a grouped file. I have tried various terminal commands taken from forums etc but none of these appear to have done the trick. A simple right click doesnt give me a remove to waste basket option and the drag and drop to waste basket doesn't work either. Amongst terminal efforts force remove etc etc., don't have any affect and the lines about the avast file does not exist.
