Ubuntu :: System Requirements For 10.04 - Speed Up Performance?

I have an older PC running Ubuntu 10.04, and the system is slow, especially with Firefox running. I recently upgraded to 2 gig memory, but it didn't help. I have plenty of space on my hard-drive, using only 30 gig of 80 gig. My CPU is Intel Celeron 2.40GHz. I have broadband, and the speed seems good. What are the system requirements for Ubuntu 10.04? Any tips for speeding performance, esp on Firefox? I used to do a defrag when I had Windows; is there any need to do that on Ubuntu also?
I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.
I have A dell vostro v13. I am have installed LMMS which runs ok if I put minimal demands on it but if I start putting to many demands on it like running More then three Zynaddsubfx plugins or multiple sample players the cpu moniter goes into the red and it starts to sound bad and slow down a great deal. I know a small laptop is probably not the best choice to run a DAW on unless it has a good processor but this is the only computer I currently have and I really like LMMS. Is there any way I can get more performance out of my computer? I looked a little into overclocking but dell Bios Does not allow for this. Is there any tricks that I can do to get LMMS to perform better given the limitations of my system?
I have recently upgraded to a M4A77TD motherboard and 8Gig of memory.I have a AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 645 Processor, and I cant say that I see much improvement over the one that died. I have noticed that the HDD light is constantly flashing so I wondered if I couldnt use some of the Ram to create a ramdrive to speed things up . So ..my question ... what should I put on my ramdrive? My own thoughts were the var and usr directories. I would load the ramdrive at startup (which would slow down my startup) And Rsync back again on shutdown.Has anyone done this? Ive had a look through the forum but cant see anything ..but my search terms may not be all that good.

My desktop tower is pretty old and runs horribly slow nowadays. I only use it for a little internet browsing and to upload photographs etc. It runs on 1Gb RAM and has the celeron(R) 2.4GHz processor. What is the best way to boost overall performance speed/response times? would a better processor be viable?
I'm new to openSUSE and my computer is quite slow although my computer isn't that bad. I opened up ksysguard and it appears that my CPU is the bottleneck. My CPU usage is usually 100%, then after a few seconds, it goes down to 20-60% and then it goes back up to 100% after another few seconds. It says I have 141 processes running (I don't know if that's normal or not).
My Specs are: CPU: AMD Duron (tm) processor 1.8GHz Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Memory: 2GB RAM I'm using KDE.
I have recently migrated my file server over to a HP Microserver. The server has two 1TB disks, in a software RAID-1 array, using MDADM. When I migrated simply moved the mirrored disks over, from the old server Ubuntu 9.10 (server) to the new one 10.04.1 (server).I Have recently noticed that write speed to the RAID array is *VERY* slow. In the order of 1-2MB/s order of magnitude (more info below). Now obviously this is not optimal performance to say the least. I have checked a few things, CPU utilisation is not abnormal (<5%) nor is memory / swap. When I took a disk out and rebuilt the array, with only one disk (tried both) performance was as to be expected (write speed >~70MB/s) The read speed seems to be unaffected however!
I'm tempted to think that there is something funny going on with the storage subsystem, as copying from the single disk to the array is slower than creating a file from /dev/zero to the array using DD..Either way I can't try the array in another computer right now, so I though I was ask to see if people have seen anything like this!At the moment I'm not sure if it is something strange to do with having simply chucked the mirrored array into the new server, perhaps a different version of MDADM? I'm wondering if it's worth backing up and starting from scratch! Anyhow this has really got me scratching my head, and its a bit of a pain! Any help here would be awesome, e-cookies at the ready! I have a Windows 98 computer I would like to run a linux distribution on. Note: It has 333Mhz and 64MB of RAM. Currently (using the KernelEx program), I can run the latest Firefox w/ latest Flash and use Microsoft Word 97 and Excel 97. Are there any options in the Linux world that can match what Windows 98 gives me with my system specs?
What are the hardware requirements of openSUSE 64 bit? Is it the same as 32 bit? In particular, I'm concerned with how much HD space I need to install the OS. The ISO for openSUSE x64 was 4.2 GB. Crazy!
i have a sony vaio desktop pentium 4 1.5ghz 128mb and i want to install ubuntu on it,iv tried ubuntu 10.04 but it doesnt meet the system requirements,i also tried ubuntu 8 but it says "this kernel requires an x86-64 CPU and i only have i1586CPU"
I have a 2010 model laptop running slackware 13.1, and after setting up a udev rule for my epson rx700 printer/scanner, this laptop can print to the rx700 without problems, and I can scan straight into gimp with xsane... I can even share the printer and scanner over my local lan.however when I pack up my laptop and hit the road, the other folks in the house cannot print or scan over the network anymore, so I tried to get an older desktop we have laying about to be the cups / sane server instead of my laptop.I tried a Dell Dimension 8300, and a Dell Optiplex GX 260. Both have USB 2.0 however, on fresh slackware 13.37 installs, even after the udev rule, neither old computer is successful finding the scanner with sane-find-scanner, although it is listed in output of lsusb.
does anyone know if there is a workaround on these older machines, or have there been some hardware changes in the last 8 years that the machines haven't undergone, and I should give up trying to get one to be cups/sane server for rx700..
I am wondering if you can play Runescape on Puppy Linux(Slackware) with Java, Flash, and the plug-ins are all installed, and i use a Live Usb. Is this possible? Recommended Requirements(and please don't write the bare minimum)
Trying to make sense of this Linux stuff, by trying to install Fedora 14. First impressions are it?s a parallel universe populated by those who hark back to the era of Windows 3.1 / DOS, and earlier, where command line instructions and messing around with .ini files was all the rage. Which might all be a great little hobby to go back to, being more 'at one, and intimate' with my machine and learning a new skill to take some pride in, but all it means so far is my patience is being really tested by needing to learn it all from scratch!
The installation guides seem to suggest that if your graphics card is not good enough then the installation will default to the text based one. Which is what happened in my case. I can get to the login prompt after the installation, but that's the point where it gets really frustrating in having my machine think it?s a mid 1980s Commodore 64 or something!! Never mind PEEK and POKE, I just want to THUMP or KICK it.
I read somewhere I should start X Start to start the GUI. Nope, x start or xstart doesn't do anything. I then read that only works if I had installed X Windows. Can't find where or how I install X Windows though! I then read, as I say, things default to purely text if your graphics card is not good enough, but then I can't find anything about what the minimum spec is. Seems odd that a card that can cope with Windows can't work with a system as basic as linux/fedora with its frustrating command line-intensive way of working.

Basically I'm wondering if there is any way to lighten Gnome and Ubuntu I would like to keep Gnome if possible. I am a pretty experienced linux (or for you hardcore GNU fans GNU/Linux) user having used it for almost 4 years and I just built my Arch system but have found that alot of the functionality that I've come to love about ubuntu isn't in the default Gnome package but that Ubuntu's Gnome is heavily modified so I want to switch back but do to my lack of modern hardware I can't run Ubuntu as smoothly as I want.

I am also a Developer so I know I can compile the Kernel my self and remove some not needed junk and optimize it. But I was wondering are there some Highly intensive processes that don't really need to be running? The only thing I would be using Ubuntu for is Web Browsing, Coding, Gimp, Text Processing and probably Music; thats really all I need I don't do much else besides that. tl;dr: Basically all I'm trying to do is lighten Ubuntu and Gnome without putting 3 days worth of work into it.
I install KDM cause I couldn't run fglrx on GDM since i install the drivers of my GPU and the KDM ... I am suffering from poor system performance youtube videos mostly HD run very laggy and overall performance decreased ...
I am running the newest linux (ubunbtu 11.04) on an old laptop (2.3 Ghz celeron, 760 mb ram, bios is the latest version). I don't expect it to perform well, it's not a fast processor.But.....it performs so poorly with linux...and I am beginning to wonder whether the machine is broken or malfunctioning. The processor utilization seems high at all times, but I am not sure what is normal/typical.Which of the many benchmark software packages should I use in order to quantify it's performance (or lack there of)? Are there web resources that will list benchmark values of various machines, so I can determine if my punch box is broken or whether it's just slightly slower than other similar machines?

I need evaluate the ext3 file system performance; i need define:
- services provided - parameters and - the performance with different parameter values; for example, changin the value of the "data" parameter (journal, ordered, writeback).
I do not know what services ext3 provides. Well, i know intuitively that it provides services to read, write and erase files. But, there are anything more?. Where can i find the API?. Is the ext3 file system POSIX compliant?

Last I upgraded one of our cent 5 boxes which is running kvm with a mix of centos and windows VMs.After the update performance just tanked on the XP guest, but the others (including other windows VMs) are just fine.I checked with our good friend google and didn't really get any help there.We're hoping to NOT have to rebuild the XP guest, so I thought I'd check in here first.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Pentium III (Coppermine) Memory 182 MiBEverything seems to run extremely slowly. Am I a bit short of resources for this installation?I am a complete tyro with regard to Ubuntu.
I am running Ubuntu 11.04 off of an 8GB flash drive. I have no hard disks but I do have a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading and 1 GB of RAM. So, it shouldn't be my system that is causing it to run slow, but rather limitations of the USB (I'm pretty sure it's USB 2.0). Is there anything I can do, unnecessary processes I can kill, etc. to make it run faster?
I'm running Kubuntu 10.4, and I'm having a really slow Internet connection, with Windows everything works fine.
When I upload a file to an internal Ubuntu server the speed is ok ~15MB/s.
The problem is only with Internet Firefox / synaptic, any program using Internet. Last download done with synaptic display 18KB/s when normally it should be 500.
I have this new flatmate who uses all my Internet data up before the end of my monthly clockover. Instead of having to buy heaps of data top-ups at the end of the month, is there a way I can limit the speed of his computer through the network? I have tried looking through my router settings (which is a Thomson router) but there doesn't seem to be any options in regards to limiting activity of a system on the network.
I am upgrading my (as I call it) archive server. It is server used for archiving anything from user files, to images, backup data etc. lots of files of different sizes. It has 8 WD320RE disks in RAID5 for total little above 2T space. Disks were working perfectly good for 4 years. I will be replacing them with 8 WD2000RE disks in RAID-5, somewhere around 12T of usable space. I am currently using RaiserFS as file system, because it was hip at the time and as turned out once, when I had to copy data to other disk, is about 20% more efficient than ext3. I can save about 20% more data on Raiser. My question is. What file system do you suggest for using with new configuration considering that space is more valuable than speed.
I have Fedora 13 installed on my laptop. For some reason it always seems to run at 1GHz even though the maximum is 1.67GHz (even under 100% load).

I tried changing the limits by setting cpufreq-set -r -g userspace -c 0 -d 1000MHz -u 1670MHz but the output it still identical (in particular "frequency should be within 1000 MHz and 1000 MHz").
