View 5 Replieshaving had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package

I've tried deleting the cached files, changing my server, checking that my date & time are correct (signing can be time sensitive), updating gpg (it was already at the latest), and maybe some other things I've forgotten.
This morning, Update manager downloaded and attempted to install linux kernel image and header files but failed with some sort of error. I get this error when I try to load Synaptic. In addition to that, the Ubuntu Software Center does not work when I try to search for and/or look at applications.
I have installed 10.04 on several machines as well as imbedded inside VISTA. All of these installs work fine except the one on my HP Pavillion dv9000. The synaptics device on these machines is very touchy in all operating systems, but caused a strange issue in ubuntu 10.10. While connected to the internet and working fine I barely touched the pad and everything quit. I rebooted and found no way to reconnect to the internet. On the panel there was a little icon about the connection manager. Hovering over this icon gave the message "Connection Manager daemon not working". The usual tab to "enable networking" was dim and could not be activated.
I searched for several hours and found no reference regarding this daemon. Is there a source of the op sys names for such daemons and what sort of terminal command would I use to restart it if I knew what it was called? I ended up scrubbing the partition and reinstalling. Even the recovery process would not get the daemon to restart.
I keep getting an error message when opening the Synaptic Package Manager. "E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report." I also can't install any software from the software center. When I run the line in terminal, I get lost.

I am running Kubuntu 6.10. I opened adept package manager to create a new repository. It opened and I created the new repository (/home/dell/repository/)it went through. I closed adept. Opened adept and a error message reading this popped up: "The APT database could not be opened! This may because by incorrect APT configuration or some similar problem. Try running apt-setup and apt-get in terminal and see if it helps resolve the problem." I ran it in terminal (I was online) for both and update and upgrade in both apt-get apt-setup, but it tells me "E: type "/home/dell/repository/" is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list E: The list of sources could not be read." I tried opening Add/Remove Programs but it did the same thing as adept. I am a linux newbie, and haven't toyed with APT database. I right clicked on it and clicked enable, it stayed grey. I left the program then. How can I fix the APT database?

my distribution is ubuntu 10.4.
It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
