I tried most methods suggested on many sites to install drivers
## through the additional driver panel only
## through the Nvidia.run file I downloaded
## through the terminal using apt-get
All failed to start ubuntu gui it takes me to the console login and I noticed it says "saned disabled" edit /etc/..something. This problem made me install ubuntu again three times and every time I activate the driver then install the driver Nvidia.run or through apt-get and both leads to a black screen tty1 login. So what to do now I installed and removed many things and I won't reinstall ubuntu again. Also I typed compiz and this came on:
root@ubuntu:/home/sherbieny# compiz
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":1.0".
compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :1.0
Launching fallback window manager. I want to install properly so that I can start normally and enable the extra visual effects and the custom effects. Please elaborate the steps clearly
New Info:
When I enter nvidia-settings : server X opens and says
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server. When I enter nvidia-xconfig as root and restart nothing happens and when I enter:
nvidia-detector it says none
and when I enter: nvidia-smi
Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 260.19.21, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 260.19.29. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.
Failed to allocate an RM client
Could not allocate resources!
root@ubuntu:/home/sherbieny# apt-get update kernel
E: The update command takes no arguments
A new and very exciting error everyone now also the windows 7 that I have besides linux has also crashed and cannot open the login window. I don't know whats happening all I know is that few hours ago I logged in to windows normally now I cannot login to either one of them and the funny part is: I'm working on my thesis on this computer and I cannot work anymore and I'm supposed to meet with the professor on monday.

What are the differences between "su -" in a GUI terminal and directly logging in as root in a text mode terminal (tty1-tty6)? Any environment, path or other functionality differences?

I'm kind of new to Ubuntu. Anyways did a fresh install over windows, would crash with this pixilated purple screen. So I tried "safe graphics mode" and it worked. But now that it is installed, how do I get out of it and have it run normally?
Edit: tried to manually install the nvidia drivers, restarted comp and now it wont boot in. Stuck on a black screen and it says "gpu lockup - switching to software fbcon".

I recently did a fresh install of 10.10 (previously I had 10.04). I could not do an upgrade because the package manager had a problem with unresolved dependencies resulting from the installation of a Nokia package for my CS-15 usb modem.Since it was a new install, I did fresh backups of everything I needed, including evolution. After the install I tried restoring my email from the backup. Then I noticed that the send/receive button was disabled and so was the option to work online in the file menu.
The version of evolution is 2.30.3.I thought this threadhad an answer to my problem but it appears to be something different. I tried posting to that thread but repeatedly got a database error message. A new thread is probably a better way to go anyhow.I tried deleting the .evolution folder in my home directory (as suggested in that other thread) and then re-installed evolution. That didn't work, however. I still have the same problem.Oddly enough all my account details are still there! I tried checking the supported authentication and that seems to work.I've trawled a number of forum posts in this and other forums but haven't seen this problem described anywhere.

I just loaded up the Ubuntu 10.04 onto a newly scratch built computer. It went to the desktop after loading up and asking for my password. I then navigated to SYS>ADMIN>DRIVERS and preceded with download of recommended drivers for Nvadia G430 on-board display adapter. Restarted the computer to activate the new drivers and it's stuck in Command Line Mode. I tried Ctrl/Alt/F7 to escape, along with a bunch of other things but nothing will kick this puppy into the desktop.

How I can get my email to function again?
I have installed Claws Mail and can now access my mail without recourse to a web portal. However, this is a very unsatisfying work-around and I'd really like to get Evolution working again. One very strange thing: shortly after installing Claws I tried Evolution again and for that one session everything was OK. Now it is stuck in offline mode again.

I've been using Vim for several months now via my web host (they allow putty access). All of a sudden, the escape key has become unresponsive. I cannot exist insert or any other mode by simply hitting escape. I have to hit F1 which brings up the help in vim and kicks me into command mode.
I'm most certain that my escape key on my keyboard is functioning fine since all of my windows shortcuts that use the escape key operate normally.
I know this is a ridiculous question and I'm certain there's a lot more to look into regarding a solution. What I really need is a solid lead as to where to start looking.
I'm using vim via putty I'm logging in using jailshell I'm not root

so here's my issue and what I think is causing it right now. I have a 1TB external usb hard drive that has worked perfectly, but recently I set it up a mount point for it in fstab so that I could create a SMB share on the drive so I could stream videos and pictures to my TV through my Wii using WiiMC. This now works perfectly, but now the hard drive has been set into read-only mode. When I use sudo to try to chmod the drive or the folders on it, it does nothing. When I right-click on the drive and check the permissions tab, it says the owner is root and all the options are greyed out.
I've read through several posts on similar topics to this, but none of them have been very helpful as they suggest using command line tools that I don't know how to use, so I'm hoping someone here can give me concise, step by step instructions of what to type in, or what settings to change in fstab to solve my little problem so I can start copying stuff back onto my drive. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and the filesystem on the external drive is FAT32. Here's some more info you might need:
sudo fdisk -l:
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
[Code]...

Card=HDA Nvidia
Chip=Realtek ALC1200
Xubuntu 9.10 64
VLC (also use other video/audio players but this one is my main one.)
I have the speakers plugged into the headphone jack of the audio card. The problem is that I am stuck in either 6ch or 8ch mode, even with the headphone box checked and all relevant settings where they are suppose to be in alsamixer. I am missing sounds plus the volume is lower then it should be over all. Music, for example, does play but it is not the whole song. For example if I listen to one song, it stops all instruments and is suppose to play and guitar solo. But I don't hear it at all.
What I want to do is get it to work in 2ch. I am using Alsa but I have no idea what to edit, or if there is anything I can edit to get to 2ch. I do not want to use pulseaudio at all. One of the main reasons why I won't use Gnome (Ubuntu) right now. I have more headaches with that then I am with this problem.

My GUI seems to be stuck in some sort of debug mode. If a battery or network notification pops up in the upper right hand corner of my screen...there are lines thru the popup (sort of looks like nine slicing), and what looks like a debug message...."<urgencyLevel> - report incorrect urgency?". I'm not sure what might have been done in the system to turn these on....I know they weren't always there.

I realized after spending some time performance tuning my mini Linux server that the hard drive is stuck in IDE mode, and I can't get the controller to be discovered in AHCI mode.EDIT: I should add that I'm running Vector Linux 6.0 Lite, which is based on Slackware 13.0. The Kernel version is 2.6.27.12.
The mobo in question is actually a small mini-ITX board from Foxconn. Here is a links to the specs:url.I use it for a media server, and so far the drive I'm using (Hitachi HDE721010SLA330) is working fine in IDE mode (apparently).
I have a strong suspicion that the crappy Foxconn BIOS supplied with the board is not initializing the Intel 945GC controller in AHCI mode. There is a BIOS entry for setting the controller to "Advanced", but I don't think it's doing the job.
Here is an "lspci -vvnn" of my system:
Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ/P/PL Memory Controller Hub [8086:2770] (rev 02)
Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. Unknown device [105b:0d4d]
Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx-
Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort+ >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Latency: 0
code....
Is there anything I can do to get the drive/controller in ahci mode, or is the BIOS screwing me?

It happened when I updated my php5.4 to 5.5 version on my small Debian 7 server. I am only getting GRUB right after BIOS boot pass, then none of the keys working even C or Shift buttons to go to command promt except CTRL+ALT+DEL.
I have tried rescue mode with live CD, selected myserver/root/ partition to install GRUB but not worked.
How to recover my server, I have some important data in it and I don`t want to destroy them.

So I managed to install Debian Jessie on a MSI G70 2PE Apache Pro that came with Windows 8.
First I partitioned some space on the laptop. Then I put on the net install cd for Debian and installed it on UEFI mode. It installed correctly.
Now I'm on Grub and when Debian tries to boot it gets stuck on "Loading initial ramdisk". The cursor under it doesn't even blink. The only way to get out of there is by Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Secure Boot is turned off. Fast boot is also off. If I try to boot on recovery mode gets stuck all the same.
The options on my grub are
Debian GNU/Linux
Advanced options for Debian GNU/Linux
Windows Boot Manager (UEFI on /dev/sda2)
System Setup.
If I choose the Windows option, Windows boots, no problem.
If I choose the edit option for the Debian entry this is what it shows
Code: Select allload_video
insmod gzio
insmod part_gpt
insmod ext2
set root='hd0,gpt6'
if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
[Code] ....
What is happening and what should I try to make this work? Could it be a graphics card issue since this computer has a Nvidia Gpu?

Naturally a Windows user, because all of my computers were with pre-installed Windows and I was young.. and I get used to it..In the time of.. growing up I became programmer and learnt how bad is actually Windows coded. Not only that.. Linux has better support for developers.So.. I was Windows user till yesterday. I finally decided to work on Installing Linux or more specifically - Debian.I love everything part of the GNU - GIMP, GTK+, Gedit, GCC...
Well I can't use my PC, both of my operation systems are non-functional.Windows get stuck (which is something completely typical for Microsoft stuff) on Windows logo screen, or safe mode loading files..Debian installation is messy.Firstly I installed Debian 6.0 on a Virtual DVD Disc mounted. I followed the installation process strictly and move forward to Debian startup. It asked me for account. root as "username" and the password as "password" didn't work so I logged in as "localhost" normal user.
However.. I started to realize that I actually also had to install the Graphical Environment in order to have Debian with the desired GNOME Desktop.. I went to aptitude to install the Graphic Environment Package but it said that I have no root rights.. I tried to log-in again, using the correct details but failed.I tried to get in, using the sudo command, but the sudo command also didn't work. Of course.. since I can't install packages, I can't either install sudo."su -" or "su" also prompt me to select a password which I apparently have no clue of.
Then I went to Debian Recovery, because there I was logged as root. It also pointed out that "Root Account is locked". I went to install packages finally.. But when the installation started to proceed It asked me for disk insertion in a specific folder? There I got lost completely.

my computer is currently stuck in "Grub Rescue mode" I don't know how to get it unlocked. I tried installing the latest ubuntu from wubi after I deleted the partition for 11.04 beta I had already had (I had some issues with 11.04 so I went to windows (it's a dual boot machine) and cleared the partition) After I got rid of ubuntu from there I don't think it automaticlly got rid of grub, which I was unaware of. So I continued to go through Wubi for to install 11.04 side by side Windows and to be used with the windows loader.
After I got thorugh all of that stuff I was instructed to restart my computer (as usual) and I did. But as soon as my computer came back on it came into "grub rescue>" with the error message at the very top of the screen "error: no such partition." I am currently using a different PC to type this. I would like to know how to get out of the rescue loader and at least back into windows (I have windows 7). I don't care to much if I can make it into Ubuntu as I have most of my more important files on Windows. I'm kinda scared atm, because I read somewhere earlier that I can't really do anything unless I have the windows boot disc, which I don't.

I am remastering Ubuntu 10.04 and would like to know if I can change the look and feel of tty1. Instead of having simple text based look can I add background image or customized the entire look of it?Just like with OpenSuse or currently I am using BackTrack. [see the attached images].Also does any aware how to keep permanent changes in Kmenu. I need to add my own menus; Kemuedit does provide you that option by not sure how to make that persistent or how can I replicate those changes on my live CD which I am remastering.

I want to use Ubuntu to build an information terminal. This will basically be an X application that displays interesting information. I has to be lightweight seeing that it is installed on compact flash memory.I started with a 10.04 command line install and added xserver-xorg. Please note I am not using a window manager or desktop environment; bare bones X only. I have created a /etc/init.d/myapp file which can start my application by calling "/usr/bin/xinit ${MYAPP}". I used update-rc.d to create a symlink in rc2.d that points to /etc/init.d/myapp. Here is my problem:
On startup the application runs but the system sometimes switches to tty1 (virtual console 1) instead of displaying the X console. I then have to manually switch to it by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7. How can I make it *always* display the X console with my application? Another thing I noticed is sometimes the X server runs on virtual console 7 and other times on 8. I though that X starts on the first available console and Ubuntu has 6 ttys configured by default. So I would expect it to always run on 7, like and ordinary Ubuntu desktop.

But i also want it to load desktop environment, but not to show it, only load it, so if i ALT+CTRL+F7, it goes to desktop environment. If its not loaded, it will not go to desktop environment or it will take like 15 sec to load it, this is why i want to load it while i am in the terminal. Also, how can i switch resolution in terminal?

Also in .xinitrc file I have the following line:
Code:
sysresources=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xresources
whereas .Xresource doesn't exist in that location. Is this related to my problem?
