I never had this problem with mint 8 but now I run Ubuntu 9.10 and I have installed all the non-free codecs and non-restricted packages I could find, but still can't play them, I am no expert in the command line, but have been using linux distros for a few years
View 5 Repliesi just installed 10.10 on my girls laptop (Acer Aspire 5735z) hoping it would fix the old problem i had with playing real dvd's. it didnt. it keeps saying "Could not read from Resource". when i try with VLC is say "Could not read from file". but if i put in a burned movie, it plays fine. i checked and it has libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 installed. i get the same problems with my laptop (toshiba portege m400 tablet) which runs fedora 13.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI like to make iso backups of my disc. I was going through some game cds that I have not backed up yet. I want to stress I DO OWN THE DISC. I just want to make an iso backup of the disc just in case something happens to them.
I normally use dd to backup my disc to an iso. Typically I use this command

I always replace the numbers for count with whatever the volume size is when i run isoinfo -d -i /dev/sr0. However I have a few game cds that I can not back up. I have tried 3 different disk that have this issue. I think they are all copy protected.
I am trying to backup the following disc:
Microsoft Rise of Nations
Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Warlords
Microsoft Empire Earth 3
When I dd any of these disc I get an iso that is 1.7GB and is not a valid iso image.
I was however able to back up other disc. How can I make an iso backup of the copy protected disc?
I would like to stress I do not condone pirating and I understand that some people may think this post is related to piracy. I simply want to make a backup of a disc that I have legally purchased
I'd like to create backups from some copy protected DVD's, for my private use only.
Does it work this way to circumvent the copy protection mechanisms?

I'm trying to rip Led Zeppelin 2-4 & Physical Graffiti to FLAC's using Banshee, but they come out distorted. Turns out even playing the CD in Movie Player or VLC gives distortion. I suspect this is due to copy protection, since I don't have problems with my other CD's. Reading around, it seems Warner was implementing copy protection around the time I bought them.
Is there a way to find out if this is the case or bypass this? They play fine in another PC running Windows 7.
I have a brand new 3CD opera and two of the tracks on the last CD will not rip.
I have tried on two different machines with the same result. (Grip/cdparanoia)
The tracks appear to play OK on CD player.
Any solutions available?
Can I return disks as faulty?
I put in the DVD and the menu came up alright. So far so good. Then I tried to actually play the movie...

I have used my PC for watching videos for some time. Normalmente with VLC under Ubuntu 10.4. Recently though I have two videos I brought from the States (I am in Argentina) and neither will work. They are ok on my DVD player, but not on the PC. In VLC the control pannel opens, but the video window opens a second and closes. In the Mplayer it says it could not read from source.

Am I missing a codec? Something else I need to install or to check?
I just upgraded to Karmic, I had not previously tried to play dvds but i cant seem to get it to work. I downloaded VLC to see if thta would fix it but to no avail. Any ideas?? I also downloaded a restricted date allowance package but nothing works. It doenst say it cant play it, it just wont start at all.

When I go to 'Open Disc' in VLC, next to 'Disc Device' it lists a string of two very odd characters, ��, as the only option. The drop-down arrow doesn't work. When I click on 'Browse' and navigate to the name of the movie (which I assume is the drive) in the 'Places' menu, nothing happens.
In Movie Player, when I go to Movie > Play Disc "(Insert Movie Name Here)", I get the following error message: "Could not read from resource"
The same thing happens with either drive, with either of two DVDs.
DVDs seem to play fine in Windows XP using VLC.
What's going on here?
I get an error whenever I try to play DVDs in either VLC or movieplayer in Ubuntu. However Windows plays them just fine in either VLC or Windows Movie Player.

It appears to be an encryption thing, because I can play backed-up/decrypted DVDs. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, 64 bit. Another user here got it working by installing Ubuntu from scratch, then going straight to install medibuntu and libdvdcss, but that's not a realistic option for me at this point.

A similar thing happens if I try to watch it in the "Dragon Player" that came with Fedora, except it doesn't play any videos at all (that's why I downloaded VLC). How can I get DVDs to play?

Again, I'm not trying to rip or decrypt anything, just play. All DVD & players give me the same results in Ubuntu, but all play fine in Linux Mint.
I've tried everything I can find. On Karmic I have libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4 installed, along with VLC 1.0.2 and latest Mplayer. I also installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. Of the following DVDs

I recently installed Kubuntu, but I can't play back DVDs.
I also added handbrake and VLC, because I would like to rip my DVDs and I understand that I need libdvdcss.
I've followed various instructions on the forum for adding files from Medibuntu, but I still can't even play back a commercial DVD.
I'm running UNR 10.04 (fresh install) on a new Acer Aspire1 250 and just cannot get encrypted DVDs to play at all (as far as I can tell), using any media-player software.I'm having the most luck so far with xine (it is at least properly playing a DVD that I think must not be encrypted), so I'd like to start with trying to get xine working.

I'm using a LaCie external DVD to (try to) play these. After inserting the DVD, I start up xine, which will play usually a brief introduction to the DVD (like the FBI warning, studio logo, maybe start up the menu) and then crash, giving the error message:

The last line of course varies with the DVD, and there are many of these messages (one per track, I think). Like I suspect, does this mean that xine doesn't realize that libdvdcss2 is there (or some codec)? If so, how do I tell it where to look?

The test DVDs play fine on a standalone player and a Windows laptopNow the problem: This machine (a Dell T3400, very boring) was upgraded from Kubuntu 8.04.1 64-bit to Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit a couple of month ago. Before the upgrade I was able to play and rip encrypted DVDs successfully using VLC and dvd::rip.
After the upgrade neither playing nor ripping works reliably. Some DVDs will play in VLC, but a lot will stop halfway through or close to the end of a track. I've not been able to rip any encrypted DVD at all. Usually dvd::rip will get a failure when it runs lsdvd to read the DVD's table of contents. If it gets past that it will inevitably freeze up part of the way through ripping a track.
I've booted the machine back into 8.04.1 64-bit from a USB key and verified that I can still play and rip DVDs that will not work in 10.04, so it doesn't seem like a hardware problem. As I say above, the DVDs work fine in other players and machines.The failures seem to be related to a libdvdcss seek error:

The block number will be different with different discs/tracks but it's usually some variation on this. I initially thought it might be this problem: [URL] but that patch seems to have been merged in ages ago. The attached logs show my attempts to run vlc, lsdvd and dvdbackup on both 8.04.1 (hardy.log) and 10.04 (lucid.log) with the same DVD ("The Shield", season 4 disc 3). As you can see there are a lot of errors logged by libdvdread3 on 8.04.1, but it does work eventually. No such luck on 10.04.

The movies will not play with VLC or SMC player either, but will play on windows. I believe it might be the driver.

The image and audio work fine so it can obviously read the data, but it can't manage the menu and finding the first 25 minutes of each track.. Everything is up to date. Nothing appears broken.I have been using Ubuntu for 3 years now and have challenged many Windows friends to change. Some have. But without a dvd player... That's going to be like selling a three-wheeled car.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 on an AMD quad-core machine. Totem, vlc, and xine all refuse to play video DVDs although music CDs play fine. I installed the restricted extras from Synaptic but no joy.When you try to start a disc with VLC, it will kind of give a quick flicker like it tried to open the screen and then goes back to the control panel. I notice that it's set to /dev/dvd but there is no such file there. The same with /dev/sr0 (the DVD player is an ASUS Sata DVD player.)
When I type ivtv-tune -c3 in the terminal, I get that it failed to open /dev/video0. I'm also missing that file.Can I create any of these sub-dirs/files? If so, what would the contents be?When I first did the installation yesterday, I had a Logitech webcam hooked up and knowing how they can mess up video assignments, I unplugged it but still no success.
