General :: How To Dd A Copy Protected Disc

I like to make iso backups of my disc. I was going through some game cds that I have not backed up yet. I want to stress I DO OWN THE DISC. I just want to make an iso backup of the disc just in case something happens to them.
I normally use dd to backup my disc to an iso. Typically I use this command

dd if=/dev/sr0 of=someimagesname.iso bs=2048 count=1234567
I always replace the numbers for count with whatever the volume size is when i run isoinfo -d -i /dev/sr0. However I have a few game cds that I can not back up. I have tried 3 different disk that have this issue. I think they are all copy protected.
I am trying to backup the following disc:
Microsoft Rise of Nations
Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Warlords
Microsoft Empire Earth 3
When I dd any of these disc I get an iso that is 1.7GB and is not a valid iso image.
I was however able to back up other disc. How can I make an iso backup of the copy protected disc?
I would like to stress I do not condone pirating and I understand that some people may think this post is related to piracy. I simply want to make a backup of a disc that I have legally purchased

I'd like to create backups from some copy protected DVD's, for my private use only.
Does it work this way to circumvent the copy protection mechanisms?

I never had this problem with mint 8 but now I run Ubuntu 9.10 and I have installed all the non-free codecs and non-restricted packages I could find, but still can't play them, I am no expert in the command line, but have been using linux distros for a few years

I have a brand new 3CD opera and two of the tracks on the last CD will not rip.
I have tried on two different machines with the same result. (Grip/cdparanoia)
The tracks appear to play OK on CD player.
Any solutions available?
Can I return disks as faulty?

I'm trying to rip Led Zeppelin 2-4 & Physical Graffiti to FLAC's using Banshee, but they come out distorted. Turns out even playing the CD in Movie Player or VLC gives distortion. I suspect this is due to copy protection, since I don't have problems with my other CD's. Reading around, it seems Warner was implementing copy protection around the time I bought them.
Is there a way to find out if this is the case or bypass this? They play fine in another PC running Windows 7.

I have this project for my operating systems class and I have put together the basic flow chart to aid me in writing the program. I know how to use pipes as a buffer to hold info. I know how to create a binary semaphore. But what I dont know is this:
How to "use a delay adjustment parameter K in the critical section to adjust the speed of the display process to show that without semaphore protection the displayed contents of the buffer are randomly interleaved."
First off, I am definitely not asking anyone to give me the solution. But I do need some guidance. So I figure there will be an if statement with two options:
1. If true, use semaphore protection to enter/exit critical section
2. If false, no semaphore protection -- this is where the contents of the buffer should be interleaved.
Now does that mean that as each child process enters the non-protected critical section, it should "sleep" for a randomized time? I mean, will this allow my output to be interleaved?
So lets say my command line looks like this:
what happens to the 100? Is it randomized using rand and srand and passed as a parameter to sleep() inside the critcal section?

so i have a promotion audio cd from 2008 and i simply cannot rip it it is copy protected i simply want to copy it to my computer but whatever is in there does not allow me to i have tried

can see i have used quite a few of the heavy guns any of those would work to rip any other audio cd i think here i need some űbernerd expertise ok it tells me there are no audio tracks on the disc which of course is not true as it plays in my stereo it pretends to be a data disc but is not

I was given a CD for work purposes and when I put the disc into the drive I get 2 disc icons on my desktop. One has data (a pdf file) and the other has serveral audio tracks. I tried to use dd to image the disc but it gives an input/output error immediately without copying anything. If I try to use brasero or k3b to copy the disc it only copies the audio portion. The data portion does not show up in the drop down to copy - only the audio. If I right-click the data (or audio) desktop icon and select 'copy' from the shortcut menu then it creates an image of the audio portion.
for dd i tried:
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/username/test.iso
This give an immediate error with no data written to the iso file.
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/username/test.iso bs=2M conv=notrunc,noerror
This copies a small amount of data to an iso file but it wasn't usable.

I want to copy this video DVD to another DVD. I have 2 DVD drives (1 ROM, and 1 RW) on my desktop. I have tried a number of different programs including K3B with no success. What I want is the DVD to be able to be played in a DVD player for a television. On my laptop, when I right click the DVD's icon on the desktop it gives me an option to "copy disc". The only problem is my laptop is only DVD-ROM so I can't write DVDs leaving the only option to do it on my desktop. Both my desktop and laptop are 10.04. However, when I right click the icon on my desktop it does not give me the option to copy disc.

I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.
sda1 - swap
sda2 - /
sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

this blew my mind today, because i've been using ubuntu for 2 and half years. Brasero 2.28.2 in Karmic does not have an option enable multisessions when burning disc or import a disc which has a multisession.
Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.

I'm sorry for this stupid question, but I have nowhere found it.I need to access to my USB disc from text mode (In Fedora LiveCD I see it and i can access /media/New Volume). In F12 runlevel 3 in mc I see it in /dev/disc/by-label as @Newx20Volume. But I don't know what is the correct path.

I use Ubuntu 9.04 exclusively on my own machines, but I have a couple of flash drives that got infected by some corrupt windows executable (*.exe) files, probably by somebody's trojan (they are Cruzer 4GB so came with installed fancy programs that I dont need but didnt remove and Windows keeps installing unwanted ini files and other trash every time I use them in somebody elses machine or in an internet cafe). I deleted quite a few files, but some are stubborn.
$ sudo chmod +w-X doesnt seem to work. How do I unprotect and remove them? The filesystem is vFAT.
I suspect the files were created by some kind of a trojan as my work requires my flash to be pretty promiscuous.
When I 've backed up all the good files I need, I'd be happy to reformat the flash drives as straight vanilla data storage and retrieval, provided I can still use them on a variety of machines running MS windows as well as on my Linux machines. Any guidance on reformatting?

How to copy a Read-Only file in Linux and make the copy writable with a single cp command in Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)? The --no-preserve and --preserve seemed to be good candidates, except that they should "and" the mode flags, while what I am looking for is something that will "or" them (add +w mode).
More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.

At work I'm using a windows box with local and network drives. One of drives I have mapped is my Linux home directory (We have separate windows and linux accounts and home directories here). When I view it from windows, all of the files and folders beginning with . are shown, as would be expected. (Although . and .. aren't in any folder)
Just wondering if there is a way to tell windows to not show anything starting with a dot. I was hoping there's a registry entry or something that defines what a 'protected operating system file' is, so I could put dot files in the same category as thumbs.db etc.

I have AMD athlon 64 processor, Seagate 160GB SATA Hard Disk, ASUS A8VMX mother board.With this configuration, I can Install FC7 without any error. But all the latest releases after FC7 is not detecting my Hard disk. Is there any solution to solve this problem? Actually I'm searching for a solution when the FC8 released. My computer has two hard discs; one contains Windows 7 and the other is completely empty and has a capacity of 160 GB. I want to install Ubuntu and another distro - possibly Fedora - on the empty HD but I am stuck as to how to go about partitioning the drive.Should I partition the drive first so that it is ready for two distros or should I install one of the distros first and then let the second one do its own partitioning?If I should partition the drive first could someone in the direction of a step-by-step guide to this;preferably a guide for dummies. I already created /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdb2 thinking that these would be the equivalent of two logical drives in Windows e.g. D: and E: but this didn't seem to be the case because when I started to install Ubuntu it asked all sorts of questions to which I did not know the answers so I have now returned the drive to its original state.
