I'd like to start Tomboy (the sticky-note application) at start-up but have it minimized to the Gnome panel. I tried adding tomboy to System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications, but then Tomboy opens up in full-screen mode. Then I tried adding tomboy-panel instead, but that doesn't seem to do anything at all. What's the trick I'm missing?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI forced a quick restart with 'sudo shutdown -f now' and when logged back in gnome-panel doesn't start at all. I can right-click on the desktop & run terminal from there, so I'm running web browser from terminal. I tried 'sudo killall gnome-panel' & got 'no process found' I tried doing a full restart, still the same.
I tried running gnome-panel from the terminal.
'gnome-panel' gives me my panel after a 4 or 5 second delay. If I exit the terminal or Ctrl-C I lose the panel again.
'sudo gnome-panel' gives me what appears to be the panel for the root user.
Recently updated to 10.10 Wondering if it's possible to change the start icon on the gnome panel? In the past I have been able to accomplish this by navigating to the theme's icon folder (usr/share/icons), replacing it with my new icon, updating the cache and restarting gnome. That method doesn't seem to be working however.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter upgraded to 11.3. Do a operation that active a network node, the Knetworkmananger will active a display on "Task Bar" (see figure 1). And it can't be minimized to "System Tray Panel", just can't be minimized to "Task Bar".
And the network list display pops up without all display some time (see figure 2), it's very boring.
If I kill the Kneworkmananger and restart it again, it will just have a Icon on "System Tray Panel" normally. But if it change to another network node automatically or I change it by clicking the icon, the display on "Task Tar" will appear and can't be resume to "System Tray", just like mentioned above.
I don't know why have this problem, I tried to reinstall the Knetworkmanager, but the problem also exist.
then I tried to move something to a workspace and it got locked into opening every time i opened firefox,. I tried to fix that and because i have no idea what i am doing whatsoever i lost the whole bottom panel. I can hear music playing from two different minimized windows,... but cannot find them to close them.. Can not even see them
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running a week old 11.3 install with KDE (no desktop effects), compiz, nvidia. Last night I was working away. I had Thundertbird, Firefox, and VMWare Workstation open. Maybe something else, but I don't remember.
I was typing away. Maybe I hit something on the keyboard, but maybe not. All apps just disappeared, meaning that they're windows were not open and were not minimized to the panel. I could open *new* windows, and I fire up a terminal and ran top, which showed that they were all running, just not visible. Obviously, this is a Bad Thing.
I installed avant-window-navigator and followed these instructions to remove gnome-panel from startup: URL...However I have since uninstalled AWN and now cannot get gnome-panel to load at startup.I think I have put my settings back where they should be -- looking at them in gconf-editor:
1. desktop > gnome > session, the required_components_list is [windowmanager,filemanager,panel]
2. desktop > gnome > session > required_components_list, the panel value is "gnome-panel"
Yet gnome-panel does not load at startup. Any ideas why?Clarification: I can get gnome-panel to load by listing it under Startup Applications, but I am curious why it won't load via the gconf settings.
I'm trying to start tomboy in the tray, but every time it starts the "Search all notes" window pops up...
How can I stop it from doing this?
If I don't have it running and run command tomboy, it starts in tray fine, running again brings up the search all notes window... If I put tomboy in the startup preferences, it acts as if it's been called twice (But if it's not in there it doesn't run at all)
I'm putting a program in my startup applications that is completely GUI, with no command line options. The program is Calibre, if anybody is curious. Is there any way to start this program minimized? Gnome, Lucid, x64
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've updated to Maverick and I'm running Gnome Shell at login, the version from the repos.
My problem is that Tomboy in the tray does does not list the titles of my notes. There's just the yellow note icon. The rest of the text (Synchronize, Preferences, etc) all work normally.
If I log in to the normal Ubuntu desktop, there is no problem with Tomboy.
Kontact is automatically started when I log in to kde 4 and I would like to figure out how to make it immediately minimize to a tray icon. When I used kde 3.5 I had a script in .kde/autostart that ran a dcop call to close kontact, which effectively minimized it to a tray icon. I assume that I should be able to do the same now with dbus and a script using dbus-send. The problem is that I haven't been able to figure out the exact dbus call that I would need. Has anyone else tried to accomplish the same thing? I've googled but all the results I've found are for kde 3. I'm using kde 4.1.3 and kontact 1.3.

I'm surprise that synaptic wants to remove gnome with tomboy, how can I avoid this disaster and remove only tomboy and other application i don't use.?

If I:
1. Add drawer(s) on the gnome panel
2. add items to one or more of those drawers
3. reboot then:
1. all empty drawers can operate normally
2. drawers that have stuff in it cannot be opened.
Is it possible to install Gnome-panel in Xfce? I'd like to completely replace xfce-panel with gnome-panel. It is possible the other way round so maybe this way too?

Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
How I can set that my left panel fit the top edge of the screen (instead of top panel)?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 10.4 and the gnome-panel appears half, as you can see in the attached picture, if I try resolutions over 1024x768.If I kill the gnome-panel and it restarts, or if I change its properties, it became OK, but in startup it appears like the image.I've tried other Gnome 2.3 based distributions and occurs the same issue. With Gnome 2.28 it doesn't occurs. Then ii seems a gnome 2.3 problem.

I am using Rhel5 and I'm new to linux so pardon me for sounding a bit green around the ears.Anyway..I got an error message a few weeks ago about how the start up script that displays icons on the far right of my start panel was malfunctioning and it was going to be deleted from the start-up. didn't really know what it really meant and I just clicked ok.wireless eth0 status icon as well as my amarok status icon are hidden on the start panel. How do I get it back/add that script back to the start-up

symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?

I suppose my question would be, where is the "panel-shadow.png" file located that I can edit and make transparent? I found it before but cannot for the life of me now.

I've managed to ALT-RIGHT-click-add some launchers to the top gnome-panel. When i now click on a launcher the gnome-panel crashes(?) and reappeares, but the program starts without problems. If i do this two times in a row (1 sec diff or so) the gnome-crash screen appears and i've got to log out although all the programs are still running without any problems.

I recently bought a second monitor and I had this set up perfectly fine with two panels on my primary display and one on my secondary. I've now gone away for the weekend (leaving the monitor) and I went to turn on my laptop and it didn't work.
When I login to a gnome session (or indeed a failsafe gnome session) I just got two horizontal white bars (where the panels would be). I switch to a terminal, login and run top and see that gnome-panel is on 100%. Running 'killall gnome-panel' does nothing (tried a few times).
I've had to install xfce4 just to type this message. Is there any way I can 'reset' gnome-panel or any other fix? Or even a workaround would be nice. I'm on 9.10 by the way. I am going to upgrade at some point but its not really an option yet.
For some strange reason, my gnome panel does not start up when I log in. I have created a thingy following some instructions that I found in another thread, on which I have to click twice every time I log in in order for the panel to appear. This seems to be related to configuration issue in my user account, because if I create a guest user account, the panel will appear normally. Now if I move my home folder to that account, the panel will not start.
I believe this has to do with the fact that I installed and then uninstalled compiz
New to ubuntu 9.10...here is the deal..i movd the gnome panel on the right side of the screen and it was hidden...but after few minutes i lost the panel...
