Ubuntu :: Slow Startup Of Virtual Machine 10.04

Nov 5, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 as virtual machine and now there is slight problem When I turn on machine I see VM bios but then VM stops and cursor (underscore) starts blinking. I waits like this for 2 minutes and then proceeds normally. There might be VM bios seen again. Since here, no slowness is noticed. It shuts down really fast

I'm using VMware workstation 7.0 and VMplayer 3.0.1, hard disk type used is SCSI.

Fedora :: FC13 Virtual Machine Manager Excrutiatingly Slow

Jul 26, 2011

I used my fc13's "Virtual Machine Manager" to install a FC14 vm image from a new iso. After a week of 8 hour days I got fc14 installed, I think that the "minimal" install option was bad. Now it takes yum 15 minutes to get warmed up. and about an hour for 1 simple package.(It was going in the background while working on other stuff, causing the cpu fan to roar with the extra load)It would be easier to install Fedora on an abacus or perhaps water clock.

General :: Automatically Run A Virtual Machine (made By Vmware In Fedora OS) At Startup In Fullscreen?

Sep 11, 2010

I am an administrator of a student lab with 20 PCs. I was thinking of a way to protect those machines in the long run with the presence of some students with destructive behaviour. The most suitable solution to install a Linux OS and use virtual machines to load Microsoft OS. This way once the OS fails I can simply replace the VM with a clone that was previously made.

The point is that most students have no experience with Linux, that's why I need to load the Virtual machine automatically at login and in full-screen view so that The startup process ends up in Microsoft OS through the virtual machine (VMWare based) in Linux platform.

update : I'm using Fedora13 Linux distribution. I believe that part of launching the VM in full-screen is more difficult than automatically launching VMWare at startup. Is there some way I can tell VMWare to launch a particular virtual machine in full-screen when it starts on boot?

Ubuntu :: Slow Startup, Plymouth Not Showing, Slow Desktop Load?

May 3, 2010

I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?

Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean). Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! I also installed grub2 by hand

Ubuntu :: RAM (4GB) Should Allocate To The Virtual Machine?

Jun 15, 2010

My current plan is to choose a lightweight host OS such as Ubuntu or XP, and then install a virtual machine with Windows 7 as the guest OS. Most importantly, I will use the guest OS almost exclusively. I would like to install all of my software onto the guest OS and then save a "snapshot", as Virtual Box puts it. This is to keep my system free of any unwanted programs I will undoubtedly encounter.

Here are some specific questions I would like answered:

What would be good choices for host operating systems?

What percent of my total RAM (4GB) should I allocate to the virtual machine?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using different visualization software such as Virtual PC, Virtual Box, and VMware Server?

I play a lot of games on Steam. What problems may arise?

I don't know the details of the server and what firewall is set up but i believe that tunnelling uses port forwarding over the ssh connection that is already set up. Where does the port forwarding actually occur? At the actual linux VM or on the router the VM is connected to?

Ubuntu :: Restore A TAR Backup To Virtual Machine?

Apr 9, 2011

I'm trying to use this tutorial (URL...) to backup my Ubuntu 10.10 (ext3) operating system. I've successfully gotten it into a TAR file on my external hard-drive, but inside the archive are 2 folders: sda5 and media (/media/sda5/), sda5 ofcourse containing my operating system.

I run VMWare as my virtual machine software, but I could easily run Virtual Box if the situation calls for it. On my virtual machine I created an Extended partition, made a 2GB swap space and the rest is ext3 (ext3 space is mounted as sda1) (at this point, Swap is OFF) here is what I've tried to do inside the virtual machine to restore:

Code:
sudo -s
mkdir /media/FROM/
mkdir /media/TO/
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/FROM/

[Code]...

but instead it just creates the directory sda5 under media of the live ubuntu cd Do I need to CHRoot in these conditions? AFTER I get the files successfully into the virtual machine, how do I go about restoring the grub2 bootloader? Right now I haven't tried to restore grub on my hardware, but I would be interested in doing so. There are a vast immense amount of forum posts about this subject, but all are to mixed results. Can anybody tell me the absolute definite way to restore grub2 successfully, I don't want to try something if it's going to mess up my install, whether I've backed up or not.

for further reference, here is a link to the previous (failed) thread I made about this same subject:
