Ubuntu :: Simple Editor For .rtf Files?

Feb 20, 2010

Anyone know of a simple file editor for .rtf files similar to Windows' Wordpad? OpenOffice Writer is much too big and clumsy for my purposes.

Ubuntu :: Simple Small Text Editor 3 Features

Mar 7, 2010

I am looking for an editor to fill a specific request for a mostly non-computer person. He uses a computer to write manuals and other books for classes he teaches. He has come to ubuntu so he can more easily access updates, gimp, etc. than he felt he could in Windows.

1) I need a text editor that can be kept open without bogging things down, or can be loaded fast enough to make him think it is "TSR" (made usable in either case by a keypress on his MS internet antique keyboard)

2) Spell check as you type with editable dictionary (he can add words that will no longer show as incorrect). Ability to select spelling suggestions easily (left click a misspelled word is his current method).

3) Ability to highlight words that most of us would call syntax highlighting but for words having NOTHING to do with a programming language etc. I would call it ability to edit the keyword file(s) to make his own languages to be highlighted.

Already rejected:
* anything with millions of complex keys to @#%$^%#$ remember that don't make sense
* gedit
* geany
* kate
* openoffice
* treeline (though he does use it for other things)
* tomboy (the cuss words there are an art form)
* anything emacs/vi or similar (see #1 reject reason at top)
* some gtk-nano clone he has no idea where he found

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting Simple Graphic Editor For Arrows And Text?

Feb 4, 2010

I need to add arrows, text, geometric shapes, etc. to graphical charts. Gimp doesn't have any way to easily add arrows (that I know of) -it's way sophisticated compared to what I need.Back in the MS Windows world I used to use Snagit Studio. I could probably run that in Wine but I'd prefer something native.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: OpenShot Editor Does Not Support OGV Files

Aug 9, 2010

I've been using gtk record my desktop, which does a very good job and records nicely as a .ogv. The problem is, the Openshot editor doesn't appear to support .ogv files, which means I have to find some way of converting the .ovg to something Openshot can use. Having used both Pitivi and Arista to re-encode the file, I find the picture quality suffers some substantial loss by becoming noisy.

So, can anyone suggest:
1. A way to get Openshot to recognise .ogv files natively? or,
2. Suggest another screencast program that records to a high quality file that Openshot understands? or,
3. Suggest a video editing program that can open and work with .ogv files, allowing the addition of music and titles (text), and then save to a high quality file like mp4?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Simple Backup HD Including All Files?

Feb 20, 2010

I am somewhat new to Linux and I am looking for a way to back up my HD with all my Linux files. I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7. The HD has been partitioned so that the computer can run Red Hat Scientific Linux. Using Grub I can dual boot to either Windows 7 or Linux on start up. I want a simple way of backing up the entire contents of my HD (both partitions - everything) - so that in the event of my laptop being damaged I can reconstruct my set up and data as before with all my files and settings in both Windows 7 and Linux intact. Is there a simple program that will enable me to copy everything to an external HD for back up. Can anyone recommend a package that will do this?

Ubuntu :: Text Editor Column Editor And Regex Search/replace, Incrementing Number Insert?

Jul 25, 2011

On windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved.What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line.The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.

Syslog is used to store simple log files or we can manage them too? Well, the thing is, that I need to run a software (like syslog) to collect my logs and put them in order and organize them so it makes them "understandable". I have been told that syslog can do the job and that it doesn't need a complex configuration to work.

Ubuntu :: FileZilla Not Opening Remote Files And Not Recognising The Default Editor Gedit?

May 26, 2010

I just started using FireFTP instead of FileZilla because I got fed up with FileZilla not opening remote files and not recognising the default editor Gedit.

I really want to use keyboard shortcuts with FireFTP, which is possible according to the help docs on-line, but there is no option to use shortcuts anywhere even having enabled FireFTP to open in a new window. I tried it in Shiretoko 3.59 and Firefox 3.18 with no luck.

I just tried removing FileZilla and it does not appear in my list of installed apps. It appears in the full list as uninstalled but when ticking the box to install gives this message. FileZilla FTP client cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type. I already have FileZilla..so how is that?

General :: Firefox Viewing Text Files In External Editor

Mar 10, 2011

I would like to make Firefox view text files not in its internal editor, but in the external editor (namely EmacsClient).Is it possible to change this default behavior of Firefox?I beg your pardon for being inconcise, I'll try to state the matter once again. First thing to mention is that I use the Linux version of Firefox. That means that unlike the Windows version the contents of the application bindings dialog is very scarce.

When I click on the link to a text file (be it remote or local) by default Firefox opens it in the internal browser. I've tested, somehow it looks at file extension - when for example I make a file with .mpg extension, the behaviour is as it should be - the dialog with "Open With..." and stuff. When the file has unknown extension (unknown to /etc/mime.types), in my case it's .out, pure text format - the default behaviour is to open it in a Firefox window.
