I have benn using ubuntu on an old laptop to run a samba server and a torrent server and it has been working fine till a few days ago when it stopped letting me write any files to the disk, So i tried deleting some of the files i no longer needed to free up some space and the disk usage didnt decrease so i checked it out using the disk usage analyzer and it says its full but i know for sure its not.

I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. Some thing is using up a huge amount of my disk space about 10G and I can not determine what it is. When I look at my disk usage in system monitor it say I have used about 25G and when I scan the directory in disk usage analyzer the entire file system used is 15G.

Yesterday on start resume from hibernate, it looked as if my encrypted home directory was unmounted; or at least instead of my $HOME contents I got a bunch of files related to this.
I rebooted the system, and since then my desktop has been rendering icons for every file in my home directory, but not updating the icons until the next reboot, if I change anything in $HOME while it is running.
I opened the gconf-editor and checked: the box for using the home dir as the desktop is not checked. I even tried toggling it and the option that controls drawing the desktop on/off in every possible combination. Nadda. The only thing that works is turning off drawing the desktop.
Here is quick fix I did for HP Proliant servers where landscape shows wrong temperature eg:

I'm not too sure if this is the right topic to post in but if it isn't please move it to the correct topic. I recently opened some ports for my Playstation 3 and the connection test on the PS3 tells me that the ports are open . But when I execute this command

I could be executing the wrong command or something but I have read through the manual and couldn't find anything that helped. I have tried this command on other machines that I have opened ports for and get similar results except for a few Ephemeral ports (80,443 etc.) which also makes me wonder why these aren't listed as open on the PS3?

I have a issue in that my 30gb creative zen is showing up fine as a media device, I can delete and add files. It is showing up as z 3.9gp partition. I formatted inside the Zen I formatted inside Windows Vista It showed 28,800ish megs free and it still showed up at a 3.9 gig partition There is no .trash folder How can I fix this? Qlix installed don't know if that matters.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI've been running Debian for a while, and now have the chance to do some enterprise-level experimentation. I stumbled across a very cheap EMC Clariion CX300 fibre RAID unit on eBay with 10 disks (£90!), so I snapped it up with a fibre HBA. It's not a SAN, technically a DAS in its current configuration. I'd like to know how hard it is to set up one of these as an actual disk device in Debian.I tried installing the HBA (an Agilent Tachyon XL2 PCI-X card, 32 and 64-bit modes) in my current 'live' server (a Celeron 1.2GHz-based machine), but while Debian detected it as a FC controller card, mapping the LUNs within Navisphere on the CX to the host caused nothing (obvious) to show up in the OS. From what I've read about setting up SANs (not DASs, there seems to be precious little info on setting up these), there's firmware involved with the card, and there are no references to getting a Tachyon running under Linux.
I also snagged a good deal on a PowerEdge 1850 server, but as it's the PCI-Express version, the Tachyon won't fit, so I'm considering buying a PCI-E HBA. I found a QLogic QLE2460 for a good price, but I'm hesitant to buy it, in case I still can't get Debian to see the disks. I'd most like to have the device connected to the PowerEdge instead of the Celeron machine. Have I missed a step in the configuration, or is there anything I can do to test if the system is working as it should be? The units we use at work are much simpler: set the RAIDs up, map the host LUNs and the disk shows up in Windows. I'm also sure I've set everything up correctly on the CX, as the same LUN is available to Windows. I realize bleachbit is supposed to "clean files", but my disk usage is at 11.8%. My disjk usage was at like 6.0%. How in the world did it jump so much? It doesnt appear to be right. The only thing I did not check were the Firefox checkboxes..

However it says that 55.7GB is used even though disk usage analyzer shows me that I have only 21.4GB filled up with data (filesystem). well I went to wubi-installer, and installed Ubuntu, and I love it, I don't want to go back to windows 7, but anyways, I set Ubuntu to my D: Drive, (200GB Space) and I installed Steam (Steampowered.com) to get my games on Ubuntu. I installed all of my games, but here is a big problem, I can't figure out how to use more than 30GB on Ubuntu, it just doesn't work. I got GParted, and the D: drive is set to 195 GB (200, but Ubuntu used 5GB)

But after a few days system started to behave strange - first it shows the message that gnome-power-manager is not correctly installed on login screen. The it wasn't able to log in even - so I found that problem might be that it shows not enough space on the root partition.This is really strange for me - I do not have any special data there.

I am running latest apache2 available in the lucid repos on my desktop. All packages are updated as of this moment. Now in the root of my web server I have placed several soft links that point to folders on another ext3/ntfs partitions on the same disk. When I try to download any large file (say above 500M)on this server using firefox, when the 'save' window appears, my desktop freezes, I notice very high cpu-ram-disk usage, even though I have not yet clicked on 'ok' to save the file. This issue is not present when the file size is small. Note that firefox and the webserver are running on the same computer.
Also I have tried nginx and lighttpd and the issue is present there as well. When I tried downloading the same files using Internet Explorer 6.0 using a XP VM the issue is not present. However on Windows as well using Firefox the issue recurs.
I've just installed ubuntu 10.04 and the message text that shows when you ssh in shows the disk usage of /home.How do I get it to show the disk usage of the entire root / instead? (like it used to on some older version of ubuntu)

When I look for specific info about what is taking the space using du command I get that the space used by the root system is 7.2Gb. I get to the same conclusion when checking the space with Nautilus.
I have the default Conky script, but want it to also monitor my secondary drive.

I'm currently somewhat confused by disk usage within my filesystem, so I'd like to do the following:
Display directory size of all, or say, the 10 largest, subdirectories to a specified directory. So, if I passed the root (/) directory, output would list the subdirectory of / with the largest disk usage first and its associated disk usage listed in human readable format (either M or G suffix as appropriate), followed by the subdirectory and usage for the second largest directory and so on.
Can anyone suggest a command or series of commands to do this?
