View 3 RepliesI have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my PC with 1GB of RAM and 3GB of Swap partition. But the machine gets hung or reboots itself when the usage is even marginally higher. This is the output of "free -m" for Swap:

I have tried increasing the swappiness to 80, and this not made any difference. I believe the RAM is taking up all the load and none of the pages are going in to the swap. Hence the slow response and the frequent hung system. I know this is an old PC but Windows XP (installed on another HDD) runs way better on the same configuration.
All my other apps and Nautilus when I open a folder can display the menu perfectly, except for Filezilla. I need to use Alt + E to use the inner menu items. but the main menu is always invisible to me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have benn using ubuntu on an old laptop to run a samba server and a torrent server and it has been working fine till a few days ago when it stopped letting me write any files to the disk, So i tried deleting some of the files i no longer needed to free up some space and the disk usage didnt decrease so i checked it out using the disk usage analyzer and it says its full but i know for sure its not.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1764 with 4GB of RAM. I have Win7 and Lucid as a dual boot. My processor is quad core Intel Core i5 M430 @2.27GHz. The problem is that I should show 4GB of RAM but the Ubuntu side only shows 2.9GB and the readout on conky shows 2.88GB. Why is this? Is Ubuntu not utilizing all available RAM?

The upgrade went well and I'm satisfied with it, however I have a question about the repositories.All the sources in /etc/apt/sources.list correctly point to Lucid, but in Software Sources / Other Software I still see references to Karmic. Is this something to be concerned about? Can I (or should I) change them to Lucid?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results.For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:

The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":

Having one issue with evolution not showing html websites showing up in email like verizon sending a promo. I have gone to edit, preferences, mail preferences, html messages and have always load images from the internet chosen. I have also added sender to contacts. I am currently writing a JAVA script to monitor certain unix processes through JConsole. Upon having lots of trouble with runtime.exec, i decided to bypass the top/ps command call and just get the information straight from /proc/*pid*/whatever.Now i can pull back any information from any of the files I want, and the current way i determine the CPU usage of a process is as follows:Add the UTime and STime of that process from /proc/pid/stat then divide my pidCpu by UTime + STime + NTime from /proc/stat, then multiply that by 100, should give me the % cpu usage a process is using, right?Theory being if I get the jiffies assigned to my process, I can divide that by the total jiffies the cpu assigns.
However, my results seem to vary from the ones gathered from top and ps. What am I doing wrong?

I am running Slackware 13.0. I am aware of free -m, vmstat, top, etc. However, none of these programs display how much ram each program is using. Is there a program that displays how much ram each program is using? I run a headless so I'd need a program that runs in CLI.
I know that top command shows %MEM (only two programs were using 0.1%MEM) but after running free -m I only have a total of 400 MB ram left out of my 1.5 GB of ram. Where is all that lost ram?
my linux bos red hat Ent 5.0 is reporting CPU usage 100% for the service/agent cimserver.basically is slows down my system and I have to kill it so my system is OK again.my question is Can I set the CPU usage for this service?
