Ubuntu :: Sharing And Setting IPv4 Address?
Aug 14, 2010
I can connect & share my dual-boot PC with no problems under WinXPPro using wired or wireless. (I've another thread going trying to get the wireless-n usb adapter to work.) Two questions so I can get the wired shares to work. I want to copy beaucoup files from the Win7 PC to the dual-boot PC. When booting into XP, no problems. When booting into Ubuntu 10.04, nothing. I can see the Win7 PC but can't access it. My two questions then are these. First, is there some switch to enable fire & drive sharing under Lynx as there is under WinXP / 7? (Samba??) Second, how does one set the IPv4 address? Under WinXP it's one address and under Lynx it's another.

Linux has duplicate address detection mechanism for IPv6 and nothing for IPv4 in kernel. At boot time, initscripts take care to check for the duplicate address but when an IP address is assigned using ifconfig or ip utility, no error is generated.

I am new to Linux so thought it would be a good learning exercise to try and setup an FTP server using linux.I have downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10 server edition and installed vsftpd, following instructions found on here I have configured the software and I can connect from an FTP client on my windows PC across the internal LAN.I have a couple of questions if I may:
1) a post on this forum suggests that local users can access the FTP server if the correct line is enabled in vsftpd.conf - I have done this and the fact that I can access it shows this is working I would think, however users added subsequently with the useradd command cannot access the server. Filezilla shows a could not connect to server error.
2) how do I give the server a fixed IPv4 address? It is currently using DHCP
3) I need to be able to put files into users folders for them to access offsite, but I don't want them to see each others filesfolders, can I do this?

I just installed Fedora core 11 and am trying to get httpd to start, but it gives me a [failed] message. When I run it with -e DEBUG, I get an error message like: "failure in name resolution, unable to find IPv4 address of 'uaserver'" In the httpd.conf I have my hostName set to localhost.

I installed it the standard way using emerge/portage, but it fails to start:
Code:
alpha skyer # /etc/init.d/apache2 start
* Caching service dependencies ... [ ok ]
* Starting apache2 ...
apache2: apr_sockaddr_info_get() failed for alpha
apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName [ !! ]
* ERROR: apache2 failed to start
I'm used to have Apache unable to find pc's FQDN, as I don't set it, and it works without it.
From /var/log/apache2/error.log
Code:
[Sat Jul 23 06:41:12 2011] [alert] (EAI 2)Name or service not known: mod_unique_id: unable to find IPv4 address of "alpha"
Computer has IPv4 address set. I suspect that the nature of the problem is in the fact, that alpha has two network interfaces (it is used as router also). I've checked Apache conf files, but didn't find any meaningful directives to set interface or something similar.

I recently installed ubuntu on one of my computers and am trying to get all my sharing worked out so I can access stuff with my windows machine. I'm still very stupid when it comes to linux.
Setting up sharing with Samba, I got my /home/user/media folder to share just fine. However I made a folder located on my second drive that I would like to share.
I have this entry for it in my smb.conf
Code:
[80GBshare]
comment = /media/Sifl_80GB/Shared/ folder share
path = /media/Sifl_80GB/Shared
[Code].....
the second drive is mounted on /media/Sifl_80GB and it was formatted as ext4.
My windows machines see the 80GBshare entry but I get the error "network path not found" when I try to open the folder. Does this mount need to be listed in my fstab for this to work correctly? I'm noticing something in the comments of the smb.conf for auto-mounting a cdrom drive when a cdrom drive is accessed by adding a fstab entry, so I'm wondering if this needs to be done with my second drive?

2 computers, Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 8.04. I have 2 folders named In and Out. Out I have set up on 10.04 for guest use. I am able to transfer files to 8.04 from that folder. Trying to set up In for a specific user to modify files. This requires a login. Both computers have the same user name and both have the same password. I set the file permissions automatically from 10.04 when electing to share In for allowed modiying. When trying to access In using 8.04, a password request window is generated with the user name already showing, and the domain name filled in as "Workgroup". The user name that shows is my login name, by the way.

I want to share 3 email addresses and an address book among 2 users on a small network with 3 computers. Emails come from 3 different POP email accounts. There are 2 users.Each user may use any of 3 computers on the network (2 computers are linux, one is Windows XP). The 2 users have separate userids on the linux machines, but share an account on the Windows machine.
Each user should be able to view, reply to, delete, and otherwise deal with emails from any of the 3 POP sources, regardless of which computer the user is logged on to. Also, each user should be able to view and update entries in the address book, regardless of which computer the user is logged on to. What about using a system like courier or egroupware to retrieve and store the email from the 3 POP sources? Then courier or egroupware could make its mail store (maildir?) available via IMAP to the 2 users via email clients on each of the 3 computers.
The mail would be stored in the single, unique, courier or egroupware maildir store, not in the email clients. So if any user deletes a message or replies to a message, the action is visible to the other user from any computer. Also, emails only need be deleted once, not multiple times from each email client. I have looked at the courier and egroupware documentation, but I can't figure out whether either of them can be set up to retrieve email from 3 POP sources? If they can, how do you do it?
They appear to be email servers that collect emails sent to the domain they are configured to serve? could email clients be setup to share a single mailbox and address book (at least on the linux machines. forget about Windows). I guess the mailbox would lock when any client opened it, so only one client at a time could be active.

I have a second network card in my ubuntu desktop that I have sharing my internet connection with a wireless router. I have set the router to a static ip address within the network cards range. But, every time I restart the computer, the network card uses a different ip address. One time it will be 10.42.43.1, the next time it will be 10.42.46.1, ect. This makes me have to hard reset my router every time it does this. How can I set the network card to use the same ip address all the time?

have a home network with two desktops and I also have a netbook. The netbook and nettop (desktop) both run UNR 9.10 and my other desktop runs Ubuntu 9.10 with all updates in place. So all 3 machines are hooked up to my home network via wireless router (secure and password protect). I want to set up file shares between machines in order to move files between machines and also to have all machines connected to and accessing one shared printer. Fair enough. According to Ubuntu help I click on a folder, then properties then the share tab and click all checkboxes and give the share a name. Then I do likewise on my two other machines. So in theory once every machine has a share setup then you should be able to access via the other machines by simply going into Network, finding the machine, opening it and mounting the shared folder. In some cases I see the other machines but when I click to open them it says "unable to mount location". So now I would like to ask... where should I look to resolve this? The wireless router settings? Some type of network or security settings on each of my machines?

This has already been asked, and answered here: [URL] but there is one problem, this requires a window manager, and network-manager. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 Minimal with no window manager, and i want to recreate the exact effects of the second post in the above thread.
I have one desktop (Ubuntu 9.10 Minimal) with a USB wireless adapter (wlan1) and an ethernet port (eth0). I want my second desktop (also 9.10 Minimal; connected to desktop 1 via ethernet on eth0) to recieve the connection through desktop 1's wireless. I realize this is rather easy with network-manager, but I am not sure how to go about it through command line.

libsmbclient
samba
samba-common
smbclient
I logged out and logged back in but whenever I right click on a file and go to the sharing tab it says that "You need to be authorized to share folders". I can click on the "Configure File Sharing" button but all that does is gray out the button and nothing happens. How do I get this to work?

I'm having issues setting up file sharing between two Linux machines. I've tried the forum cookie cutter answer of "right click folder, sharing options, share, allow others to write and edit, allow guest accounts", but I simply cannot get my two Ubuntu 10.10 machines to see each others shared files. I HAVE been able to download and use the program "Personal File Sharing", and with it I CAN share the "Shared" folder between both machines. I'd prefer to learn the correct way to link these two boxes up though, and be able to share more than 1 directory. Am I missing any programs to complete this link? Do I need to use Samba? I've tinkered with it, and I can get both computers to see a workgroup name I set up, but cannot get them to view each other in it.

I am having a problem with Ubuntu 10.04. I was setting up network sharing with Samba. Set up went fine, then I decided to change the hostname.
Following instructions I found on the web, I edited etc/samba/samba.conf to reflect my desired hostname.
Now I have to use superuser to run synaptic or update center. I don't know what else I have "broken".
I would like to change my hostname, if I did it incorrectly for 10.04 please enlighten me.

I have a server running ubuntu 8.04 with apache2. What I'd like to know is how to go about setting up a domain name? I've looked at a heap of hosting sites, but they son't seem to allow you to specify your own IP address that you already have. Also, I'm not sure about what, if any kind of DNS software I would then have to run on my server. At this stage I'm only doing preliminary research about it I guess.

how I can define a local static IP address (so that I can run a web server off of the same IP, rather than letting my router DHCP it)?I've tried doing the YaST->Network Devices->Network Settings->Traditional Method with ifup->Set NIC to desired IP->Set Default Gateway to router address method, and afterwards I can't even get into my router anymore (not even responding to ping).

I would like to set a double range of IP address with my DHCP3-server. Now, I have eth0 (which is my only network card) with this IP address : 172.16.93.1 and I have created a second interface eth0:1 with this address: 192.168.3.1. The goal is to give an IP address 172.16.93.X to phones (with option 66) and the IP address 192.168.3.X to the computers.
This is my DHCPD.conf :
ddns-update-style none;
option domain-name "mycompany.com";
option domain-name-servers 172.16.93.1;
default-lease-time 3600;
max-lease-time 2347200;
authoritative;
log-facility local7;
option ip-forwarding off;
default-lease-time 20;
max-lease-time 20; .....
Right now my DHCP server work fine, (I means, no error at the startup ) but the server give always the same kind of IP address, whatever if it's a phone or a computer. I notice something "wired", if I put the :
subnet 192.168.3.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.3.100 192.168.3.199;
option routers 192.168.3.254; }
(Which is first in the dhcpd.conf) after the "subnet 172.16.93.0 netmask 255.255.255.0", the server will give IP address 172.16.93.X at all the clients. Is it possible to give more than one IP range with one network card at the same time? And how set the option 66 to only give IP address (172.16.93.X) to the phones?
