Aug 14, 2010I can connect & share my dual-boot PC with no problems under WinXPPro using wired or wireless. (I've another thread going trying to get the wireless-n usb adapter to work.) Two questions so I can get the wired shares to work. I want to copy beaucoup files from the Win7 PC to the dual-boot PC. When booting into XP, no problems. When booting into Ubuntu 10.04, nothing. I can see the Win7 PC but can't access it. My two questions then are these. First, is there some switch to enable fire & drive sharing under Lynx as there is under WinXP / 7? (Samba??) Second, how does one set the IPv4 address? Under WinXP it's one address and under Lynx it's another.

Aug 2, 2010I am new to Linux so thought it would be a good learning exercise to try and setup an FTP server using linux.I have downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10 server edition and installed vsftpd, following instructions found on here I have configured the software and I can connect from an FTP client on my windows PC across the internal LAN.I have a couple of questions if I may:
1) a post on this forum suggests that local users can access the FTP server if the correct line is enabled in vsftpd.conf - I have done this and the fact that I can access it shows this is working I would think, however users added subsequently with the useradd command cannot access the server. Filezilla shows a could not connect to server error.
2) how do I give the server a fixed IPv4 address? It is currently using DHCP
3) I need to be able to put files into users folders for them to access offsite, but I don't want them to see each others filesfolders, can I do this?

When I run it with -e DEBUG, I get an error message like: "failure in name resolution, unable to find IPv4 address of 'uaserver'" In the httpd.conf I have my hostName set to localhost.

Computer has IPv4 address set. I suspect that the nature of the problem is in the fact, that alpha has two network interfaces (it is used as router also). I've checked Apache conf files, but didn't find any meaningful directives to set interface or something similar.

Apr 8, 2010Ubuntu LTS 8.04 + DHCP. Works fine except for fixed addresses. I mean all devices which need to get fixed IP according to their MACs don't get them and keep to receive random IPs from the range (almost everytime all machines receive the same IP they got from DHCP for the first time).

Looking further, I note that /etc/init.d/networking is not symlinked into anything other than the rcS.d directory. It's been a while since I've been tinkering at this level, but I understand that there should be a symlink from rc2.d/Sxxnetworking into ../etc/init.d/networking. So I wonder where eth0 is getting configured.

Disabling IPv4 packet forwarding but i already changed it to 1 at sysctl.conf One of the online forum says i need to configure the named.conf deleted some and run it(named.conf) and successful but still when I run network service I still get the :"Disabling IPv4 packet forwarding: net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0" The network is getting the IP range but it doesnt get any Internet connection.

But when I went to connect it to my wireless network at home, it showed that iwconfig wasn't installed by default like it did in 10.04. Does anyone know how I can either connect my system to the network without using iwconfig, or how I can get iwconfig and install it from a flash drive or some other form of digital media? And I can't do apt-get since I can't get on my network. And I also can't plug in a ethernet cable because my network port is broken.

In order to allow the VPN clients to connect to the internet, I had to enable IPv4 forwarding on the server. Is this is a security hole? Can a hacker access my servers connection from the internet (without authenticating with OpenVPN) and access my network. Can someone use Ipv4 forwarding to access my LAN network from the WAN
I used this command to enable ipv4 forwarding
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
Without IPv4 forwarding my VPN clients can only access my LAN and router, but they cannot reach my modem or the internet.

messages appear in syslog each day. Each URL has from 2 - 6 attempts at various ipv6 addresses. My question is why is bind9 trying to resolve ipv6 addresses? I have done nothing to enable or disable ipv6 and thought that if not explicitly enabled I would not have to be concerned with it.

I'm computer savvy and I use various linux servers frequently for work, but this is my first time trying to setup my own. Is it possible to have a Samba server setup so it is both secure and facing the Internet? Two questions:
Will opening Samba ports make my default Ubuntu server particularly vulnerable to penetration? More than having an SSH server running? Does Samba/ can Samba be configured to encrypt traffic or is it sent plainly? If so, does Windows and Mac support this secure communication?
If not, what would you suggest? I'd like to achieve something like a network drive and at a difficulty level that my parents could use this if they really wanted to. I will be storing things like financial information and tax returns, but no weapons-grade secrets.

I have a dedicated server (fedora core 7) with 3 IP addresses on the same eth0 interface. On the default IP address 62.193.226.127, there is some routing problem because I can't connect from the server to some other sites. Using one of the other IP addresses, like 62.193.252.129, I can connect fine. Additionally this address is better for sending mail because it coincides with the main domain name from which the mail is sent.My question is: how can I configure networking so that outgoing traffic from the box goes via 62.193.252.129?

Wireless mini-pci is broadcom 1600.Anywho,did a netinstall and all works well except I can't get the default ip that comes up with the cool wireless strength meter to change. I've tried (almost ) everything. The network gui lets me modify all the values, but is useless. I can get the wireless to work by going in and modifying the interfaces file and getting rid of the avahi-daemon function that discovers the addresses.
So, if I reboot with the re-written addresses in the interface file, and then 'iwconfig wlan0 essid' to my netgear it works. But, no pretty signal strength and I have to manually assign the netgear portion with iwconfig.While installing 'etch' on a desktop I noticed belatedly that if I had no cable connected the install asked me for ip, gateway, etc. Which bring about the questions.Is there a way to change the default values that come up with the automatically assigned ip.Will the netinstall give me a chance to input a manual ip and will it then plow under all the currently installed 'stuff' on the drive. The system runs well except for this.Failing that, is there a step I can take early in the netinstall to modify the data.Or, failing that, is there a way to modify the default if I instead make a disk 1 of lenny and run it?

Ubuntu :: Emu 1616 And ALSA - Function Snd_ctl_open Failed For Default: No Such Device Or Address
Feb 25, 2010I'm running 9.10. I was installing ALSA so that I could run my EMU 1616, and when I tried to go through the steps to install, I'm running into two errors that I've noticed so far. I think. Anyway, the first is that is states that the panelw library isn't there, and that alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device or address. The alsamixer one is really odd, since it's there, but I don't know why it won't run.
I initially had it running, and now it isn't. I've yet to get sound out of my EMU. the terminal window also tells me that it can't find the snd_emu file, even though it exists on the computer as well. I need an answer for a dummy.
