Apr 15, 2010I want to share my /home/myname/Public/ directory with other users on my system. The problem I am having is that it seems impossible to do so. I can't use a hard link because it's a directory and I can't use a soft link because the target directory can't be found by anyone unable to read my home directory.
So far, the only solutions I can see are:
1) To move everything from my Public directory to one lower on the directory tree (something like /home/Public) and then symlink to that as /home/myname/Public and allow everyone else to do the same.
2) To use something like samba to share the folder, even if only locally.
is doable because /home and /home/myname are on the same volume but there are times on my system when that is not true (I have users with their home directories on thumbdrives and external HDDs for instance and keeping their public files on a separate volume really isn't an option).

Mar 27, 2010I am setting up a lubuntu nas with all of my music, movies, etc on it. I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it

General :: Location Of Folders Shared Between Group?
Sep 28, 2010What's the best location for a folder intended to be used as a group storage location? In other words, I want a folder called "examplefolder" belonging to a group named"examplegroup" that can be accessed by everyone in that group. Is home/examplefolder the best location or elsewhere?Edit:The folder needs read and write permissions, so /usr would not work. Does anyone think /var would be appropriate? What about something in the root like shared? Is there a reason not to use /home/examplefolder?

I was able to install Linux Mint ver.10/Julia with Virtual Box. My problem now, is that I am still trying to run the tbaMUD program that is on my host OS - Windows 7. I accessed the help files included with the virtual box help menu and was able to add the guest additions that allow me to link a folder from my host OS to my guest OS. I can see it under DevicesShare Folders but I am unable to access the files and folders under this mounted folder. I am able to edit the folder, which lets me mount or add a new folder, or I can delete it.

Jul 7, 2011I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 (guest) on Windows 7 (host) with the guest additions installed. I have an auto-mount folder that maps to my D: drive on the host which I can access using sudo ls /media/sf_D_DRIVE - however, even when my user (ross) is a member of the vboxsf group I get a permission denied error when attempting to explore it. I have restarted since adding my user to the vboxsf group.
This should work because I am a member of the group (which has rwx rights), so why doesn't it?

I already tried the following command:
mount -t smbfs //machine B/public /media/public
And the following message appears:
mount: special device //machine B/public does not exist
But the folder public is already shared cUz I can access it using Windows XP.

I have a bunch of shared files from Windows 7 (which I am normally able to access from any Windows 7 or Windows XP machine on my network) but I can't access them from Ubuntu.I have tried going to Places > Network > Windows Network, but I receive the error "Unable to mount locations Failed to retrieve share list from server"I have also found another recommendation for accessing a windows server, via Places > Connect to Server, but I receive another error message there, "Cannot display location "smb://..." No application is registered as handling this file."Could anyone explain what my problem is and how I could fix it? May 3, 2010I have written an application which has more than 6 threads.Two threads share a common linked list. Out of two threads one thread reads the linked list node and other thread writes to linked list node.I am using pthread_mutex_lock() API to achieve synchronisation between having access to common linked list. The problem is the first thread which reads the linked list accesses the mutex faster making other thread to starve.
I want both the thread to have an access to mutex. It should not happen that always first thread locks, releases and relocks it. The first thread almost require to access the link list every 5 msec which is causing second thread not to gain the mutex.How should I fix this? For information, I am running this application on PXA270 ARM platform.

Dec 6, 2010My spare laptop refuses to load into the OS (it's running 10.10) or even give me a log-in screen - it sits there with a blinking cursor in the corner of a black screen. It's a 7 year-old laptop I mainly use as a mediacenter, which means I keep very little on it so I figured I'd just do a complete reinstall and move on.
So I threw in a livecd to grab the one folder I needed before I was going to wipe the drive, but apparently at some point this folder got permission locked, and it won't let me open it or copy it to an external through the livecd. Is there any way I can get at this folder?

I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong specifically or if lavabit just has some funky folder setup and I don't know how to use it. here's the basic server info, though I don't think that'll do much good for my issue (more specifically: I can log in, send messages and read my inbox, but not use other folders).

May 14, 2010After trying Truecrypt, LUKS, and Ecryptfs I decided to try NTFS encryption. Now, on a dual boot computer from Ubuntu I can browse the encrypted folders but can not open the encrypted files. All attempts produce access denials yet the Unix file permissions appear to be "0777" (owner, group, and world readable-writable).
Is there someway to get Ubuntu's NTFS software to recognize and decrypt the encrypted files? Would a different NTFS package work such as NTFS-3g?

Feb 16, 2011I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 since 2-3 weeks. First I tried live CD and the OS seems to be very good. So i installed it on my laptop.So far i had no problems until I tried to access the shared network folders of my Server running on MS Windows Vista and another trial PC running WindowsXP. I'm trying to solve this since 2-3 days, I haven't found a solution.1st of all my network works fine. All computers can ping each other and as the laptop had Windows XP installed the server was accessable.1st I installed the SMB4k tool with this program. I could see the computer names, but as soon as I select a Windows computer the tool searches and nothing happens.
I tried a lot of different variations of this command but in the end I receive this kind of error. I also tried to add -o user=username pass=password, nothing changed.After this I searched information about this error, some forum threads I googled are telling the SMB4K tool modifies the /etc/sudoers file and cause this error. So i tried to change it back with some kind of sudo chmod 0640 etc/sudoers but this won't work it seems I can not modify or edit thisw file using sudo.With the pyNeighbourhood tool I could only see my Laptop but not the Windows PCs.At the end I will install Linux systems on all of my PCs, but only if all my tests will pass .

All can access to all Volumes, so I want to Deny the users 2 & 3 from accessing my windows driver and folders. BUT i alone user 1 should have permission to access them. I've looked around for a thread for this particular error, but I can't find anything specific to the "cannot create tmp file" issue. I'm assuming it's some folder permission issue. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling samba from the Ubuntu Software Center.
