Ubuntu :: Setup Personal Server To Use As Proxy/Off Site Backup?

I have a simple issue that I think can be solved with several different methods. I basically want to create a personal server solution that allows me to do two things:
1.) I want to be able to remotely backup data to my server.
2.) I want to be able to pass traffic through it and use it as a proxy.
I am off to college next year and I want to leave a computer/server back home to do the two things stated above. I was thinking of using an Asus Eee Box PC like this:url
I want a low power reliable machine that will only be used as a remote solution. I won't be hooking up a monitor to it (that is, after I set it up).
It will be on 24/7 for easy access.
I will be accessing this server from a Windows 7 based machine.
I do not mind at all installing Linux on my server, but I am not an experienced coder so I will need software with a GUI that can help me set this all up.
I am trying to set up a home web server for my personal site using Ubuntu 11.04 and Apache. I have set up a user called www and given it FTP access to its home area (/home/www) using vsftpd. I then edited /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and set the DocumentRoot directive to /home/www. When I made a test index.html file in that directory it worked fine. Then I FTP'd to the server (as www) from another PC and uploaded the site files. Now when I try to access the site I get an error 403 (forbidden).Obviously I'm doing something wrong here but I'm not sure what. What should I do to fix this.
I don't care so much the practicality and needlessness of actually setting up a computer for proxy server for personal usage, but none-the-less, i want to do it, and i'm just wondering about hardware.The proxy, i don't intend on having a desktop environment, so it'll be a terminal interface.But for a system that will handle traffic for 3 pc's and a ps3, how much hardware would one suggest i need, as far as RAM, HDD space, so on and so forth.
I was thinking it would be fun to do with with my old amd k6-2 processor and it's 32mb of ram, but in order for that pc to work, i'll need to replace a few hardware pieces, and before i dumb money into it and pull it out of the closet, i want to find out if it would even be worth my time to do it.
I have installed proxy server on ubuntu.I have done every process which is needed to establish proxy server.internet is also working fine through proxy but the sites which needs to be blocked it is not blocking.it is opening.I have made entry of sites which i needed to be blocked in block_dstdomain file in proxy
Some time ago, while I was still using Ubuntu 8.10 I began accessing Internet through a proxy server. Even though I had set my system proxy settings - including authentication - to pass the proxy, my online backup service (Jungle Disk) stopped connecting. I finally figured out that I had to include proxy port in the Jungle Disk Desktop tool's configuration (like this: 192.168.0.1:8080). That worked fine until I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 - with the identical proxy setup. This time I can't get any connection at all. Here's the Jungle Disk report:
I have a few friends that have seen me bypass firewalls with a socks proxy (SSH). I explained on how it works and how secure it is for browsing the Internet and checking your email in public places. I had at least 6 asked me if I could set up an account on my server for them and they would pay me! Now what I wanted to know was how I can set this up in a server and website where they can register an account and pay me through PayPal! I don't need help setting up the site! Just on how to set up the server to automate this. What tools are needed (ex. ISPConfig, jailkit.... stuff like that?) I don't mind doing this manually but if I get more people that would like this I don't really want to do every single one.
We currently have a SUSE Apache2 reverse proxy server setup to reverse proxy (proxy_mod) our GroupWise Web Access server. Our SUSE box is located at www.domain.com. Our GroupWise Web Access server is located internally and is called GWMail. We are in the process of migrating from Novell to Windows, so we will have an exchange server with OWA access running on a Windows Server 2008 IIS7 box. That one will be called EXMail internally. Right now when someone goes to www.domain.com/gw/webacc it goes to the GWMail internal server from the outside world. This was all set up by previous techs who used Linux more.
We would like to set up reverse proxy to be able to reverse proxy to the Exchange Server from the outside world. Unfortunately the snag we are running into is that Exchange needs to run on port 443, and forwarding to port 443 has been a little tricky. I've read elsewhere we need to implement a generic TCP proxy, such as IPtables. what we need to do to get our SUSU Apache2 server to be able to reverse proxy to our Exchange server on port 443. For the save of argument lets call our SUSE server ExtranetServer. Below is our default-configuration.conf file's configuration:
My ISP seems to be having some configuration problems cos of which I cant download certain files (mostly exe and msi and some rpm files) as the download either doesnt start (firefox download window showing "Starting..." all the time) or download gets stuck at some point of time.
However I have access to my college computer through SSH using public key authentication and my college computer has internet access 24x7. I would like to be helped with 2 things: How do I use the internet through my college computer? Like when I use the internet, the requests go through my college computer so it must appear that the requests come from my college computer IP while I use firefox from my home computer How do I configure yum to download packages through my college computer? I want to setup yum to use the IP of my college computer to download the packages.
looking for a bit of assistance from those that know. i would like to setup an offsite backup server preferably using my current ubuntu 10.10 server.i would like something that has a client that can be used on windows PC's and that is managed so i can controll bandwidth and storage space.it will only be used for storing important files and not full backups of machines.i thought about using something like comodo backup for the clients and just setting up and FTP server but just wonderd if people know of a better solution.
I currently have my server setup with a web page and ssh. I am looking to find a way to access the internet from my work computer, but all proxies that I can find have been blacklisted...I can however access my home server webpage. Is it possible to create my own proxy so I can surf from my work laptop?
on my server I have atMail and a intranet site being hosted using mySQL for the database locally, and obviously backing it up would be a good thing. I got the backup package from the list if you use the add/remove software called dump-0.4.etc.. can't seem to find much on how to use it, set it up, nothing. Granted I could be looking for the wrong thing which I'm sure is the case. As of now it's looking like a USB drive is going to be my only option, that will change in the future as this "project" goes further (we are a windows shop trying out Linux, and the next step is going to be adding another server that's a file server at that point we'll probably go to NAS for the backup and then transer that to a USB for offsite/secondary backup).
i was tasked to setup a proxy server to block access to some websites. i'm using centOS 5 and Squid 7:2.6 STABLE21-6.e15...i appended the following and tested the configuration with the supposed server i am using and the it does seem to work but now i'm wondering how i can test it with a client computer..i have 2 LAN cards and i just connected the other to one PC (can a direct connection work or does it need to pass thru a switch or hub)...i just can't figure out how it should be... how do i configure the 2nd LAN card to use this computer as its proxy server?
I have an interesting situation. I'd like to use bittorrent for legitimate purposes (mainly linux distro based) but the powers that be have blocked access to bittorrent at my university. I have an ubuntu VPS that I use for odds and ends and was thinking that I could setup a SOCKS5 server on it. That way, I can input the SOCKS5 info directly into the proxy section of my local bittorrent application (Transmission 1.92 running on snow leopard) and be good to go. The problem, however, is that I cannot find a way to get a SOCKS server up and running on my VPS. I've heard that ssh can be used as a simple SOCKS server, but I've also heard that i may need to install a more complete SOCKS server such as dante. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
I want to settup a proxy server who just redirect the internet connection to my second computer. I try Squid Proxy but its too complicated for me. Can you sugest me another more simple program to do what i want?
Could you suggest feature-rich disk-based personal backup program for Linux (and I've seen a few)?
I want to do nightly backups of the whole system and be able to rollback to any of last 7 days. And, it must be incremental backups. What tool should I use? The tutorials I've read about rsync tell only how to store latest incremental backup and I need last 7.
I have 2 servers. One is an operational CentOS + cPanel server and the other is a blank CentOS server. I want to use cPanel's backup suite to backup our customers accounts but I want to do it so the blank server is mounted to the cPanel server, rather than an FTP backup. If that makes sense. I believe from previous experience that NFS is the way to go but I'm not sure.
I'm using a Debian box as a gateway. I'm planning on bridging my DLink 604T modem/router so that traffic on the LAN goes to my gateway (which only has one NIC). The Debian box is running a PPPoe application which I'm hoping to log into the ISP through the DLink. I plan to configure the box as a squid transparent proxy. Most Howtos I've seen use NAT with 2 NICs, eth0 for the LAN and eth1 for the Internet. Any step-through to set up NAT for this?
I have changed to ubuntu a few months ago from windows, where I used to have a mediawiki set up on a local server. This wiki was used for notes, archiving, document management, file storage, calendaring, almost everything that most people do with a normal directory tree on their drives.
Unfortunately, I have not yet managed to install a local media wiki on my ubuntu 10.04 LTS system so far. I have tried it once and messed up the php-stuff so badly that I had to reinstall the entire system in order for it to work in a acceptable speed.
how to set up a current version mediawiki (or an older version, if that's the only chance) as a local wiki in 10.04 LTS? There is no network access to the wiki, just local access using a firefox browser on the machine where it is installed.
I am doing a LVM replicate to another server. Example: server1.foo.com has / , /boot , swap and few LVM partitions. All are in /dev/sda disk of size 80GB. /dev/sda5 is a LVM partition which has only one vg00 and it has 2 LV's (/var and /usr) and a SAN storage connected to this server which has around 500GB of single partition(a LV partition) called /data and its under vg00 .
Now I have build another server called "server2.foo.com" with same RedHat OS version - RHEL 4 and want to import the same LVM setup at destination. Down time or unmounting the filesystem is not a problem (but am trying to reduce the down time as much as possible). Is there any way that I can take a proper snapshot of whole LVM disk and restore with same setup at destination without losing the data and the lvm file system layout?
I have windows 2003 with high memory and HDD in local network which i want to make it as backup server. there are few linux and windows clients which are all running in redhat,centos and windows 2003. As i want to setup netware backup, is there any best open source backup s/w available so that the backup would run periodically. i need to isntall backup server in my windows 2003 and backup client in other linux and windows 2003. any free backup software.? i went through zmanda but that is not freely available.
I'm trying to pass multiple dpmains thru one ubuntu server to various hosts on my local network.

I have tried placing VirtualHost entries in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and [url]and [url] both work but [url] gets forwarded to the c:inetpub folder on the IIS box.
I have created some little .deb packages which are running fine within my local box. Now I like to create a personal repo for testing branch to distribute those .deb. I have a hosting space based on cetos server where I have both ftp as well as ssh access and I can create a subdomain there pointing to a folder which I can define. So based on this scenario what might be the best way for me to create a debian signed repo ? I have found - dpkg-scanpackages - reprepro Which can create such repo for testing branch; as main non-free contrib style.
I have Fedora 12 installed on my computer and I'm trying to set up a printer and a scanner for my personal use. The printer is a Canon LBP 3200 and the scanner a Mustek 1200 UB Plus. Both are connected via USB.For the printer i managed to install a driver, but it will still not print. It only ejects blank pages. For the scanner i tried sane, but to no avail.

I install Redhat9 and run proxy(squid) on this server. I test with a PC with IE put it proxy ip address any other web site is working fine but not for radio&TV channel online, i found many radio and TV online web site can not start to play after click the link.Please anybody help to advice what should i check on squid?
I am trying to backup data files from a Debian Lenny server (in my office) to a second Debian Lenny box at my home. I was going to try rsnapshot configured for daily & weekly backups.My question has to do with access to the backup files. I can get into my hmoe server via ssh (specifically putty & winscp). If I need a specific file, is it easy to log into my home machine and simply find the file(s) I need in the directory tree? Is there some other (simple) method you would recommend instead?
I've discovered that after restoring my site's backup this has happened to me again. How to delete the hacked /home/crocbits directory so that I can restore the backup under the same username. When I try to delete /home/crocbits I get this message when logged in as root:
