Just wondering, what happens when you have multiple server softwares listening to the same port? will it be able to distinguish which service to use by the protocol information, or is it setting it up for failure?
IE: http and ssh both listening to port 80.
I am running Server 10. I have a requirement to perform an action before the MySQL service starts, and perform another action after MySQL service stops.
I found the init script for MySQL under /etc/init/mysql.conf. I added my thing to the pre-start script there and works fine.
I am having trouble finding the script that stops the server so I can modify.
How do you setup Secondary or Slave Servers in NIS? Will the domain of the slave server be the same as the Master Server?

I am installing Nagios Monitoring tool in RHEL5 and I got stuck at one point. The details are as follows:
Nagios version:3.0.1
At the end of installation when I try to execute the command
#chkconfig --add nagios
Its displaying "error reading information on service nagios : no such file or directory".
I'm run 10.10 desktop x64 and when I start setting up an account in thunerbird and enter name, email address and password in the first window and go on to the next next that window flashes pop and imap very quickly before stopping with a showing of imap. There is no edit button and I have not been able to find out how to set the protocol to pop3. Is there and error? Or am I missing something. I like thunderbird and would like to continue using it but my email providers only support pop3. I'm writing to this list because I'm thinking the problem may be specific to my version of ubuntu but I'm not sure.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am on my Debian system right now because of issues after compiling Linux 2.6.35, I followed Alien Bob's tutotorial, but obviously I missed something. I added 2.6.35 to my lilo.conf file, I tried to boot to it, but dhcp wasn't working, then I tried a startx and KDE would not load. No problem right, I will just boot my original Slackware Linux kernel.
I booted to the original, DHCP worked great but when I do a startx, I just get a black screen. Here is some of the terminal output.

It's hard to get some of the output because I am looking at the other screen and typing this.
I'm trying to switch over my old server(9.10) data to a different server(10.04). My old server only had 2 drive bays, whereas my new one has 4. I already have my new server up and running(for the most part), and want to add the old hard drive to it. How would I do this without losing any information. I believe even my old drive is formatted to ext4. I was going to just throw it in there, but I'm afraid of losing information as I really don't want to lose a 1tb of info. I did try to search, but my title had too many common words in it.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am willing to learn. I purchased and am currently reading The Official Ubuntu Server Book, and I think I have found my first side project. First, the book said Ubuntu Server is pretty much coded with a scripting language called Python. I want to define the different init levels of my server. I want to define like init 5 to have a GUI interface, just for kicks. A GUI might come in handy when doing certain things in Ubuntu Server, I just don't know, simply because I've been working on the command line. So my first question is, do I need to learn Python to script in Ubuntu Server? I have very little experience coding let alone scripting. The book has example of Upstart scripts, but I was wondering if the language is Python?
So I guess my question is a general question to scripting If I were to focus my time in learning Python as well, would I be able to customize/utilize more of Ubuntu Server? I'm not exactly sure what to learn/read as well to this. I'm trying to broaden my horizons, and I've decided to experiment with Ubuntu Server.
How to get the following information using terminal in ubuntu I googled entire internet but could not find it:
1. What patches has been selected(installed) in my installed kernel(current kernel).
2. List of installed drivers.
Though I have uninstalled and rm -rf'ed everything I can find having to do with ufw, I am still getting weird output from iptables -L If I type in

Currently the way tabs on the taskbar look (the bar at the bottom) make it a bit hard to distinguish between them. sometimes they all look like one big clump of text. its quite messy. when you look at something like the windows xp taskbar [URL] its much easier to see between them. I guess its also because the buttons look 3D in that they stick out a bit. Plus the choice of colours used for when you are on a tab helps.
How do I change/find a theme for this?
On a new fresh install of Lucid I am unable to fetch sensor information using this procedure [URL]... LM sensors et al are installed, but after running the sensors-detect command (twice), typing sensors into Terminal gives me "no sensors found". This same system (with no hardware or bios changes) displayed all the sensors OK in Jaunty. etc/modules looks like this. Am I supposed to uncomment # Chip drivers w83627ehf?

Worked fine for ages, ran an update and now I get the following error message when using the updater:

I'm interested in setting up and providing my own DNS services for public use. I have two separate server machines and can easily put an extra NIC card or two in any machine, if required. What would it take to create such a service like ZoneEdit or EveryDNS?
I know I'd probably need to register 2+ static IP addresses thru Comcast and open a whole host of ports on my router. How would I set this up in terms of software? Is BIND the right tool for the job with a control panel in Usermin/Webmin?
I just updated my server, (Ubuntu 8.04) and had to restart. Now I can no longer SSH into my Linux box or access my website from the internet. Apache is running and everything worked fine before the restart.

I am running a server at home, and on rare occasion my server will shut down. Is there a logfile I can check to determine whether the server was shutdown due to a script on the computer, a power loss, or someone hitting the power button? I am not by any means a linux guru, but I know enough to get around.

..and I can get to the site with the browser.
