Ubuntu Servers :: Df -h Not Updating With Changes Made By Other Machine?

Mar 22, 2010

I'm running a virtualised backupserver. This makes backups to an LVM volume on the host. /dev/mapper/system-backupserver is put through as a block device to the KVM-based, libvirt-managed backupserver and there it's mounted (obviously) rw.

I've also mounted the same volume, as ro, on the host, so as to get at my backups more easily. So now the same partition is mounted on two different machines, both thinking they've got sole access.

Now when the backupserver VM alters the contents of this partition, it sees this happening normally on its df report, but on the host machine, this remains mostly unseen. I tried doing a mount -o remount, but that doesn't help, although umount/mount will do it.

Meanwhile I seem to be able to get at all the data just fine, and it's just the total used/free that gets out of whack. Is there any way to regenerate/reread those totals without doing a full umount/mount cycle?

General :: Automatically Run A Virtual Machine (made By Vmware In Fedora OS) At Startup In Fullscreen?

Sep 11, 2010

I am an administrator of a student lab with 20 PCs. I was thinking of a way to protect those machines in the long run with the presence of some students with destructive behaviour. The most suitable solution to install a Linux OS and use virtual machines to load Microsoft OS. This way once the OS fails I can simply replace the VM with a clone that was previously made.

The point is that most students have no experience with Linux, that's why I need to load the Virtual machine automatically at login and in full-screen view so that The startup process ends up in Microsoft OS through the virtual machine (VMWare based) in Linux platform.

update : I'm using Fedora13 Linux distribution. I believe that part of launching the VM in full-screen is more difficult than automatically launching VMWare at startup. Is there some way I can tell VMWare to launch a particular virtual machine in full-screen when it starts on boot?

Server :: Fdisk Does Not Like Md Devices On Machine Since Configured A Raid And Made Changes To Main Workstation

Mar 24, 2011

It's been a while since I configured a raid and have been making some changes to my main workstation/server.
fdisk does not like md devices on my machine... always says it has an invalid partition table. While this is said to be normal all over the net, I don't feel warm and fuzzy about that fact. What is best practice these days, to create a non-partitionable md device or a partitionable mdp device?

If I create a partitionable md device, I would imagine it would look good in fdisk. However, I am concerned about growing the array afterward. I would then have to grow the array, redefine the partition, and then grow the file system. The PITA factor goes up. Has anyone worked with both? Pro/Cons? My array was created with:

mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --force --raid-devices=3 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1

FYI: I have backups. I understand RAID 1 may be a better choice of raid level.

Debian Installation :: Updating While Moving To New Machine?

Sep 9, 2011

My Debian Lenny box has two hard drives: a smaller one, upon which I installed the system and a 500GB drive which, during installation, I assigned for mounting as the "/home" directory. A few days ago, the smaller (system) hard drive crashed. Although fsck was able to make the drive mountable again, many system files (esp. things like inittab) were lost.

Since the machine, itself, had actually been pretty old when I first installed Debian (Etch, originally), I am going to be replacing it with a new system and I have a few questions about getting this all done.

First of all, the old computer was a Pentium 4 and the new one is a Dual-core, 64-bit Pentium (E6600) with 4GB RAM and a 500GB SATA drive. I'd like to install 64-bit Debian Squeeze onto that drive and, since I've never used the 64-bit Debian before, would like to know if there are any pitfalls or caveats - especially any dire reasons I should stick with 32 bits, instead.

Next, I would like to keep the other 500GB (IDE) drive mounted on "/home" so that my things would be where they already were on the old system - especially files relating to Iceweasel and Icedove. Of course, there are no binaries on that drive, since I had all of that on the drive that crashed, but are there any other things I must take into consideration? Also, what would be the best way to make that drive "/home" during the new installation without wiping it out, but having it ready for when I create the users so I can point them to their appropriate directories?

Finally, since the old computer had been an Etch system that had been upgraded to Lenny and since I would be installing Squeeze (and, likely, the 64-bit Squeeze, at that) onto the new system, would there be any problems with the above scenario, considering the potential of older configuration files, etc. on the old "/home" drive?

My subject line says, "Updating while moving to new machine," but these really may not be "update" questions, per se. Then again, the presence of that old hard drive does introduce some update-like elements into the equation, and that is why I am asking these questions.

Ubuntu Servers :: Backing Up Server Before Updating?

Feb 27, 2010

I've been running my little server at home for a few months now, and I've noticed that Webmin has detected that I'm in need of over 100 updates. I'm a bit scared to run the updates because everything is working just fine right now, but a part of me still wants to run some of the updates. Now I know backing up the server would be a good idea to do before this happens. This server is a media server with videos, music and pictures taking up the majority of the hard drive space on the server. I just have one partition on the server, outside of the swap partition. I would like to back up everything on the server except the videos, music, and pictures, because if even an update messes with the server, I could always retrieve those, and the external hard drive I'm going to back up to wont be big enough to hold everything anyways.

if I were to backup up everything except for those directories that hold my videos, music, and pictures, and something were to go wrong, if I were to restore all of those, would I then be back to the state my system was at when I backed up? I've never done a back up and restore in a linux environment before. I just want to make sure that just doing that will be enough, because the last thing I want to do is hose my server after taking several weeks to get it to the working state that its at.

Software :: Automatic Updating Of File On Different Machine / When User Saves File

Mar 1, 2010

I just came back from a meeting with someone wo wants this functionality:When he saves a file on *his* machine, it will automatically get copied onto a server (this is on an office LAN). This is so if there's a virus attack on his machine, he will have an uninfected backup copy.
To make matters worse, the client machines will be WINDOZE. Apparently he's seen this kind of functionality at an office somewhere (he was saying something about "Microsoft" , but my brain has erased that part of the conversation ), and now wants it for himself.

I was thinking about Samba obviously, but the tricky part is doing the copying when the user *saves* a file. This will require hooks into the OS to see when a file is being saved.*If* I manage to persuade him to switch his client machines to Linux (which would be the ideal choice and make life far easier), how would it be done? I'd have to use the File Alteration MOnitor in the kernel, right?Would it be possible to write the copying code in a shell script?

Ubuntu Servers :: Multiple FTP Servers On One Machine?

May 20, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 and have a secure (SSL/TLS) FTP server on it. However, I'd like to use this FTP server to update programs I made using Microsoft Visual Studio. Unfortunately, in Microsoft's infinite wisdom, secure FTP servers cannot be used. Rather than use an insecure FTP server, I want to set up my secure FTP server to be able to access whatever I need to on the machine, and then add an insecure FTP server that only has access to the directory where I put my update files. I am currently using vsftpd as my FTP server. Is there any way that I can set up two FTP servers on this single machine?

Fedora Servers :: Process Of Updating All The Clients Nodes To The Same OS?

I'm having a problem with NFS. I'm trying to mount /home, which is on the server, to the client nodes. The server is currently running FC14 (64 bit) and I'm in the process of updating all the clients nodes to the same OS. Currently, all the client nodes are running FC8 (32 bit) and are capable of mounting /home on the server. However, the one client node that I have updated to FC14 is having problems mounting /home. I can ssh to the node with no problem however I get the following message:

Could not chdir to home directory /home/myuserid: Permission denied. Now, if I excute the following command: "sudo mount -a" I get no errors and now I can see my home directory.

Ubuntu Servers :: Users On The Machine Can Login Into Vsftpd With Their Username And Password On The Machine And Go To Their Root Dir "/home/username"?

I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

Ubuntu Servers :: FTP Directory From Another Machine?

using FTP Directory mounted, thus it could make my life easier. And the fact, it's not.well, I'm putting in the /etc/fstab file to be like this;

Code:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

[code]....

in a conclusion; every file i copy, move, to that mounted directory will fail. and the error given is that Input/Output error message only.Is it this effect, due to the script i put on fstab is wrongly?

Ubuntu Servers :: Php Only Works On Server Machine?

Feb 22, 2010

I'm trying to setup a server at home so i can work in a LAMP based web app from a Windows 7 laptop. I downloaded Ubuntu Server 9.10 and installed it on one of my desktop PCs. I also installed phpmyadmin and everything seemed fine (tested with lynx) I started noticing the problem when I tried to connect from the laptop to the server in the same LAN. when i tried to access [URL] the browser kept loading forever and nothing appeared. The default [URL] it works" page display just fine I then created a testing.php file containing just <?php phpinfo() ?> in the /var/www directory and it works on the server, but from the laptop it displays the same hanging behaviour, any php code doesnt seem to be properly executed when apache serves other machines.Im guessing its some sort of php configuration causing this, and it might be obvious for ppl with more experience with server setups, but i've never setup a server before and Im having a hard time solving this.

Everything else works but I cannot add machine accounts "on the fly" using the "add machine script" as provided in the server guide. I have been able to make it work by enabling the root user but not as a user with admin privileges and sudo in the script. Despite multiple attempts including a new 10.04 install and following the instructions (in the 9.10 server guide) to the letter. Does anyone out there have a samba PDC actually running on Ubuntu and able to add machines on the fly without enabling the root account (i.e using SUDO in the script and a user from the admin group)?
