View 4 RepliesI'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 and have a secure (SSL/TLS) FTP server on it. However, I'd like to use this FTP server to update programs I made using Microsoft Visual Studio. Unfortunately, in Microsoft's infinite wisdom, secure FTP servers cannot be used. Rather than use an insecure FTP server, I want to set up my secure FTP server to be able to access whatever I need to on the machine, and then add an insecure FTP server that only has access to the directory where I put my update files. I am currently using vsftpd as my FTP server. Is there any way that I can set up two FTP servers on this single machine?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have this intra net server project going on and now I moved to 10.04 however there are still some things that I would like to see clarification and instructions on. I am interested to set up multiple parallel websites for my apache server, however I am not sure how to do this exactly. Now I have solid address rivera.wippies.net and port 80 redirecting to my server. What I would like to get done is that I get multiple independent of each other websites for my server I was thinking of making websites like this
/var/www/site1 (which would be as rivera.wippies.net)
/var/www/site2 (which would be as rivera.wippies.net/othersite)
/var/www/site3 (which would be rivera.wippies.net/secondothersite)
etc, so that I have multiple "individual" websties for my server. Requirements would be that each of these websites could have SSL encryption as needed available too, since some of the website could have confidential information.
I keep getting this error trying to connect to newly installed postgres server on Amazon EC2 running Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat....
Could not connect to server: Operation timed out Is the server running on host "....ap-southeast-1.compute.amazonaws.com" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432?
I've updated config files, as follows...
pg_hba.conf
added
host all all 124.168.242.0/24 trust
where 124.168.242.0 is the IP range of my ISP
postgresql.conf
listen_addresses = '*'
port = 5432
I am attempting to connect with pgAdmin 3 client. I don't think the problem is the client.
I have nine barcode scanners, each of whose input I want to send to a separate instantiation of a program I wrote. Each device shows up as /dev/hidraw_ (I'm using Ubuntu 10.4). The problem is that they all act as simple keyboard input, and I can't seem to redirect the output from one to a specific instance of my program. I've tried something like cat /dev/hidraw5 > ./myapp, and that doesn't work. I've tried actually opening the device in my program using open("/dev/hidraw5"), and it returns success, but subsequent reads don't do anything, and the scanner output is just printed to the console.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have KDE 4.4 and Firefox 3.6. Whenever I click a link from a plasmoid widget, it tries to open Konqueror and another instance of Firefox. The page actually loads in the opened Firefox window, but the task bar shows an instance of Konqueror and another instance of Firefox, that keeps loading for a while then close. See image below:
I currently have setup the browser default application as "firefox". If I set this option to use the default application, it opens in Konqueror and I don't see additional windows in the task bar. If I change the option to "firefox %u", then it exhibit the same issue, but the process is much faster, so the loading windows don't stay for long in the task bar. Additionally, it opens the link on a new Firefox window and opens the page twice. Although Konqueror is not loaded, the bouncing icon next to the mouse pointer shows up and stay for a while.
I am running Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud on two PCs, one as Controller, one as a node. I have downloaded two Ubuntu virtual machine images from the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud Store and can successfully start instances of them with: euca-run-instances -k mykey emi-XXXXXXXX -t c1.medium
If I run this command I can see the instance is running: watch -n5 euca-describe-instances
I can ping the IP address of the VM instance from my Controller but I can't make an SSH connection to it. I'm following the instructions @ [URL] so I have tried connecting with: ssh -i ~/.euca/mykey.priv ubuntu@192.168.1.250
The result is: Permission denied (publickey).
If I try adding -v to the ssh command I get:

We are working on a project to create a display wall of 8 monitors arranged as 2 high by 4 wide. Each monitor is connected to a single machine and all machines are networked with a master machine with its own, seperate monitor.
Our goal is to get the 8 machines to share a single desktop, with the master machine acting as the server. We have looked at using Xinerama or NMM, but we are unsure about how to get started configuring the multi-machine, multi-head display.
I need to set up an ubuntu 10.04 instance on ec2, but there are some instance ready available I tried with few but I am not really happy with that since those are meant for test puporse.
I have to deploy a java/j2ee based web app with mysql. 1)need to install tomcat 2)java runtime 6 3) apache web server
What would be the best image to use for my requirement and I initially planning to launch with the micro instance if my web app demands I may further move to small and larger instances. So it should be eligible for free usuage tier.
Hi. I need to create second mysql instance on the same server but another port. What is the right way to do that?

I have setrup Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud on a single machine.
1) I am able to run the instances from store (karmic) On running the instance two ips are assigned (public and private) as 10.B.C.X and 172.19.1.2
2) I am able to connect to the instance (10.B.C.X) through ssh (using key)
3) However I am unable to access the instance outside the UEC (using public ip). When I try pinging, I get an error Request timed out or sometimes Destination host unreachable.
4) I have provided the following access using euca-authorize
Details below:
1) Hardware : Blade (64 bit)
2) Version : Ubuntu 9.10; Eucalyptus the one using apt-get install eucalyptus
3) Topology : Single physical system
4) Mode : Managed no-vlan

I had installed UEC 10.04. It is a 2 server configuration with CC, CLC, SC and Walrus on one server and NC on another server. I could run instance of images, But when i try to ssh to the instance, it doesn't work.
It shows ssh: connect to host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 22: No route to host. This to me seems there is a problem with my network connection. Pl find below the ifconfig output of the two servers:

I've got my first EC2/cloud instance of Ubuntu up and running. This is my first time really dealing with the server edition. I've loaded Apache, Tomcat, PostgreSQL, and Webmin. I've got a public IP on the instance and it is working. I've opened, for now, ports 80, 8080, 443, and 10000 to 0.0.0.0/0.
I cannot get into Tomcat Manager or Webmin at all through a browser. For Tomcat, I've restarted, stop/started, and verified that Tomcat is running. I installed Webmin all through apt-get commands so any dependencies should have been installed (first time doing it this way), but cannot get to the login screen. But if I just go to the IP, Apache goes to the "It Works." splash page. Did I miss some set up? Is there an internal firewall in Ubuntu Server edition that needs to be set?
I have installed vsftpd. When I run the command sudo service vsftpd restart, I get the following response: restart: Unknown instance. But if I run the command sudo service vsftpd start, I get the following response: vsftpd start/running, process 3804. To understand what is happening, I run the command ps aux | grep vsftpd, I get root 3805 0.0 0.0 27120 620 ? Ss 14:00 0:00 usr/sbin/vsftpd.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm looking at setting up a couple automated systems: Here are a few examples:
* Internal accounting system to download and process emails
* Public web server to visit
I could put each system on its own separate box -- for example, it's generally good practice to separate anything that external users have access to (such as a webserver) from internal processes such as accounting. Now, rather than dishing out the money for two separate servers, could I get away with just installing new instances of VMWare on the same box for each system?
To give you an idea, these are not large scale computationally sensitive systems. The accounting one is simply downloading and tallying emails, and the latter is just a webserver with maybe 5 hits per day on a good day. I could definitely pick up a new box for say $50, but I wanted to know the general practice of using VMWare on the same box versus two separate boxes.
I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.
These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'
From: [url]
I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.
1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?
2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?
I always keep my headphones as well as my 2.1 speakers connected simultaneously on my PC (Gigabyte motherboard). Both these audio devices work fine simultaneously on my Windows 7, but in Ubuntu, only my headphones work, speakers don't work at all. I tried changing some settings in SOUND PREFERENCES as well as ALSA SOUND MIXER, but not luck so far.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat's is the most efficient way to install multiple concurrent Java JDK versions on the same Linux machine?
I need Java5 whilst my current Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic comes loaded with Java6.
I know I could setup a VM for this but I am looking for alternatives.
I currently have a group of 3 servers connected to a local network. One is a web server, one is a mysql server, the other used for a specific function on my site (calculation of soccer matches!).
Anyway, I have been working on the site a lot lately but it is tedious connecting my USB hard drive to each computer and copying the files. This means I am not backing up as often as I should...
I have a laptop connected to this same network that I use for development so I can SSH into to the computers, is there any software for ubuntu that can take backups of files that I choose on multiple computers? I know I could rsync but is there something with more or an GUI?
Then I can just every 2 days move the most recent backup from my laptop to the USB drive. Then I will have the backup stored in 2 places if things go kaboom somewhere.
Sorry for the hard to understand title but it's difficult to describe in one sentence. What I'd like to do is install Windows and several different versions of Linux on the same system. After everything is installed, I'd like to switch between operating systems *from inside the operation systems*.
Example: I'm inside Windows but I want to reboot into Ubuntu 9.04. I need to run a command to update the boot manager so it knows to boot into Ubuntu 9.04.
I do not want to walk to the physical box to make a menu selection. EDIT: I'd like to be able to switch between Windows 7 and Ubuntu (9.04, 10.04, and 10.10)
I have a program that attaches to an interface. I can run two copies of the program on two systems (each running one instance), connect it to a switch, say 1.1.1.1 & 1.1.2.1. In this configuration two instances of the program can communicate and everything is fine. Now, to reduce cost, it want to use only one system with two nics connected to the same switch, running two instances of the above program, each instance attached to two interfaces respectively on the system. I have the following settings:
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
inet addr:1.1.1.1 Bcast:1.1.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
[code]....
However I cannot ping one from the other.
Neither "ping -I eth1 1.1.2.1" nor "ping -I eth2 1.1.1.1" works.
I am find myself in need of building what amounts to 3 ip networks on 1 physical lan.
first LAN is another companies network on the 10.0.0.0 network a mix of pc's and equipment
second is LAN new company network 192.168.168.0/24
third network is an ip phone system for both i would like to use 192.168.200.0/24
i am hoping to use the same dhcp server to do this, assigning address to the old company's 10. network via mac address reservation.
I am searching for a way to have multiple sessions or users on the same vnc server. I have a machine that I need to remotely access as root (for admin purposes) and as myself (as the normal user) the rest of the time. I probably will never have to remotely login at the same time as both root and myself (I am not that multitasking!)I searched the web for almost 1 hour without finding anything useful... Right now my /etc/rc.d/rc.vncservers.conf looks like:

I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBookPro5,1 system that can boot into Fedora 12 x64 as well as Mac OS X. My installation of Fedora is set to use the nVidia graphics drivers to provide 3D acceleration when running the operating system natively. I have installed VMware Fusion on Mac OS X, and I can use it to boot my installation of Fedora into a virtual machine. However Fedora refuses to go into X Windows and just sits there with a blank screen. I can use Ctrl+F2 to switch to a command line and log into the system through the command line interface.
I'm not exactly sure why this is happening. However, I suspect that it is because when the system runs virtually, it does not make use of the nVidia graphics card. Instead VMware Fusion provides a virtual VMware SVGA 3D adapter. What would it take so that Fedora would use a driver that is compatible with this virtual display adapter when running in a virtual machine, and then use the nVidia driver when the system boots natively?
I am curious if yum can be used to export a list of packages from machine 'A' then I can take it to machine 'B' and import/install the list so my machines all have the same software.
