Ubuntu Servers :: Cant Add Files

i wanted my own server so installed ubuntu and installed apache2, vsftp etc apache2 works, typed in localhost and it showed the 'it works' page. now, after setting up vsftp, i am now able to access the server via ftp on another pc. i used my username password which was created at the beginning of the Ubuntu installation. it connects fine, but everytime i am trying to upload a file to the var/www/ directory, it says permission denied. what do i have to do in order to transfer files into that directory?

I would like to have multiple php.ini files for multiple sites.
I've a production site (word wide available) and a test site (available to some selected IP-addresses). I would like to set some different PHP settings for the test site, for example, 'error_reporting' and 'display_errors'.
Is this possible? I'm not looking for some CGI hack, unless it wouldn't work any other way.

When we download ubuntu iso images from the download mirrors, md5sums, sha1sums and sha256sums are provided for the download. But, there are also some .gpg files provided. Are they used to verify some signature or something? How do I use them to verify the signatures of the packages?

I am on Ubuntu 10.04.2 on Amazon EC2.I want to use the Cherokee web server and have it (and php) running under www-data then have the files also owned by www-data. I am only able to ssh and scp into my server using the user ubuntu. This means that I am unable to edit the files.I want to be able to edit the files owned by www-data through ssh/scp.Could you assist me in setting my server to allow me to edit the web files through scp?

I have found a login script I want to use for a website I am making. I have followed the instructions on here but don't know how to actually use the .php files properly. I open the .php file in my browser and it gives me the option of downlaoding it. How do I get it to work? I know you normally need to provide options to a php script, as far as I have seen, but I don't know how to.

I have a VPS with Ubuntu 8.10 64bit and I was looking at / and found like 10.000 files from "core.1000" to "core.10000".What is that? Something I can delete or it is a application that I have installed?

I can't get my apache2 log files to rotate on an Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit server install.
Does anybody know of logrotate creates an error log somewhere by default?
Here's my /etc/logrotate.d/apache2 file if someone has any insight if I am doing something wrong.

I have apache2 installed along with php5 and mysql5.0. I have installed them by themselves along with just installing the full LAMP install through terminal. My problem is that I cannot parse php files, it will just download them instead. I did change my apache server to nick/projects (nick is my username). If I navigate to localhost/index.html it works fine but will not parse the php files I have put there. I also have rails working fine in that folder too using apache2.

trying to send email from php I'm hosting a website from my pc. LAMP is installed, and php and mysql is running fine. i want the web site to send automated e-mails i found the code mail($to,$subject,$message,$headers); but its not working. I'm pretty sure i need to configure the php.ini file, but the problem is I have 2 php.ini files, and I dont know what one to change, or why I have 2
the two files with path are :
/etc/php5/apache2/php.ini
/etc/php5/cli/php.ini
why is there two?
what one do I need to change?

My computer crashes occasionally and all of the files that have been written in the last few hours seem to disappear. On XFS sometimes they turn up in lost+found after xfs_repair. The files in ext4 seem to be gone for good.Is there any way to force linux to flush the meta-data more often or something so my files stop disappearing?

I am trying to copy the files from my WHS disk to my Ubuntu Server disk. I have the windows disk mounted at /media/WINDOWS and I want to transfer to /storage so I ran;Code:sudo cp -r /media/WINDOWS /storageIt takes about 4-5 seconds and is complete, but there is about 500 GB worth of data there so I know it didn't really copy everything over. When I look at the files in console it shows them, but when I look at the /storage through SAMBA on my Windows machine, it only shows the directories.?

I wanted to see if anyone knew of a system that can be used for sharing files between companies? What I am looking for is a web based system that will allow an engineer to upload drawings or CAD models and put them in a "mailbox" for someone at another company. Here are the requirements I need:
1. Any type of file can be uploaded with no restrictions of file size (needs to be able to handle several GB of CAD data).
2. Only the person who the files are intended for can see or download the files.
3. A record of all transactions (uploads & downloads) must be kept.
Basically, I need a web based mailbox system that can handle huge files. Anyone know of such a beast?

I'm looking for ideas on how to transfer a group of xml files from one server to another server, either in a regular interval or ?I have a listing program, it creates a directory or classified ad type listing. When one of these is created, or an existing one is edited an XML file is created. I need to take these files and get them to another server. I've read about SOAP, FOPEN and of course FTP.

I generated a patchfile of 2 directories using this command:

Now I would like to apply the patch, doing this:

But it then asks me for the file to patch. Why? Something that looks strange to me in the patch file: there are a lot of "common subdirectories" lines. Like this:

I'm moving my site to a new VPS and need to learn how to move the files from my current server to the new one. I'd rather not download everything to my computer and then re-upload everything... seems like a lot of wasted time. There has to be a way to copy between the two servers, but how? I have heard someone mention rsync... is that a program I could use? If so, how?

i am running 10.10 server. i shut down the server to install a new hard drive for backups. When i remounted the drives and restarted the shares, About 10 very important files were missing. The rest of the data on the share is fine.

I'm having problems with the ftp-server ProFTPd,If I transfer files from a Linux host to a Windows client, it says that my transfered files are damaged, so I'm unable to open them..I've searched this forum and several people say I have to set the default transfer mode to 'binary' mode.I did that, but it didn't work at all for me... so despite the binary transfer mode my files are still damaged when I transfer them.when I do it through SSH, it works fine, so the problem is the FTP-server...

My problem is that I can' t launch my PHP files in Firefox to see them local.
I have Apache, PHP and MySQL installed.
I also moved my web folder to /var/www but still can't see them.
I can see the default html file: "It works!" but not my files.
Firefox is still asking what it should do with the file, if it should open or save it. But I can't see them.

I recently inherited an Ubuntu server where the previous admin had installed sendmail and FCheck IDS.The issue I am encountering is that sendmail appears to be rewriting both /etc/mail/m4/dialup.m4 and /etc/mail/sendmail.cf constantly (at least once per hour).dailup.m4 never seems to change (other then the creation date), while sendmail.cf has the line describing who and when it was built changed.So far I have had no luck tracking down why sendmail would be rewriting these files.

I'm new to Linux and have taken over at a company where the linux admin walked out. he has several older linux based servers running version 8.1 i tried running the command sudo apt-get install swat xinetd to setup swat but i get an error that it can't find the package. in addition, this directory xinetd is no where to be found under the etc directory. i've verified that samba is in fact installed on these servers but for some reason the xinetd and inetd directories are not on these servers.
Could it be possible that this older version of linux does not support Swat? i'm considering upgrading very soon to the latest but my main problem right now is i need to copy all web server html files that he had on the web Server i know there are different ways to copy files from linux systems but need the best way to copy all the files so none of the website links get broke off this linux server over to my windows server.
Since i don't have access to anything of the directories nor files on the web server, what is the best way to copy these files and folders off this server?

Ive been trying to figure out a method to upload (copy) all files and sub folders under that folder to my content delivery network, basically run it every 30 minutes.
Whats the best way to do it? I tested a few that I was reading about, one just copied files nd not sub folders, another moved all files.

I've tried FXP and rsync, none worked and I can't find much info on how to get them working, just alot of google results with people in the same situation as me!
