Ubuntu Servers :: Virtualhost - Within The Vps That Servername Is Directed To The Directory /var/www/the_directory
Jul 10, 2011
I'm sure it's a minor mistake; these are the steps I've taken currentdomain: domain i already have, and works. newdomain: domain i newly bought.
[Code]....
This is to make sure the files are actually there, this subdomain works... simply pointing to the same folder
[Code]...
- all ipadresses in the hosting service of the domain thing is pointing to the vps.
- Within the vps that servername is directed to the directory /var/www/the_directory
- That directory holds the actual website files. This is proven with the subdomain method.

I didn't know exactly where to put this, but here it goes:For the record, I have Apache2 on Ubuntu.OK so I have a "svn" subdomain for SVN repositories. The repositories are actual separate repositories, not a big one for all. So I'm using SVNPath not SVNParentPath (please don't suggest this as a possible fix).
The problem is I want to be able to list the repositories (or even put a blank page for that matter) at svn.mydomain.com. All repositories have a svn.mydomain.com/myrepository path with a VirtualHost for each. So when I create another VirtualHost just for the / path, it overrides all the SVN VirtualHosts, as it covers / and all sub-directories.
I would like a way to set that VirtualHost to affect just the root directory, without the sub-directories. Or to make the SVN VirtualHosts override it. Either way, is this possible? What approach should I take? Thanks!

I applogies if this doesn't fit or if this is right in from of my face but, I'm a bit confused.I'm trying to configure a few VirtualHost in apache2. I currently a default virtualhost and 2 other sites. No matter which domain I visit I still get the default page.. My Confusion is, I've been reading and some places seem to say that my virtual hosts should be in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/*Config File* and other seem to say it should be in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf what the awsner... I've tried both ways with no success .... If I put NameVirtualHost in httpd.conf I get an error saying their are no virtual hosts.

I currently am running 10.04.1 and have successfully setup my home web server to run a single website. My current settings are:
-I have registered the domain name annarrankings.com through godaddy
-A record is - host = @ and points to = 71.114.220.3
-CName is - host = www and points to = @
-on my server I have the site running in /var/www
I've done some research and found that to run multiple websites I need to setup VirtualHost.
-So I created a folder /var/www/annarrankings.com and moved my site to that folder
-Edited Apache2.conf to add the following line
-I then went to /etc/apache2/sites-enabled and copied the default file to a new file called annarrankings.com. Here's the annarrankings.com file after I edited it
-I then created a link in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled to the annarrankings.com file in /etc/apache2/sites-available
-Next I editied /etc/hosts
-When i went to enable the site using a2ensite annarrankings.com I got the following
I figured this was ok since I had already created a symbolic link earlier (a result of trying to following multiple tutorials and ..... videos at once) so I reloaded apache2. I created an index.html file in /var/www/ just for testing purposes and when I load www.annarrankings.com I get the file located in /var/www/ instead of the website located in /var/www/annarrankings.com Do I need to change my A record or CName in godaddy or did I just do this completely wrong?

I've gotten the Ubuntu Broadcom STA driver working on my AppleTV by (not blacklisting) adding the appropriate rmmod statements to my rc.local script. The system now recognizes the card; lswh -C network:
[Code]....
I can now successfully join wifi networks on the device. My ultimate goal is to create a wifi AP using the card via Ubuntu. The card is a bcm4328. I have attempted to create a wifi hotspot using the "Create new network" menu item from the network menu applet. When I try to join the network on my MacBook, it apparently can join successfully, but then gets a "Self Assigned IP" which is outside the LAN's subnet (which is 192.168.200.X, while the IP on the MBP is 169.254.161.193 and the network control panel indicates that it is self-assigned).
It would appear that the AP on the AppleTV is not bridged with the wifi. I have attempted to follow the CLI-based tutorials but chickened out when I saw I had to set the card to master mode as I do not believe the bcm4328 is capable of this.

I created a new user "www". I can login with this user. I can send emails (using sendmail) from this user to other users. But this user cannot receive any email. All emails sent to "www" will go to "root" mailbox. Is "www" a special account under sendmail that all emails will be re-directed to "root"?

I have figured out how to use virtualhost, proxypass and proxypassreverse. So far, so good.
The problem I'm experiencing is this:
I have a reverse proxy server running apache (123.123.123.123)
Behind this proxy server I have a http server running apache (124.124.124.124).
This http server has multiple sites (virtualhost), it's only reachable via the proxy server.
If i run a nslookup on www.somedomain.com I get 123.123.123.123 (Not really but you understand what I mean)
I put my proxy to have the IP 123.123.123.123, so far so good. The requests come in to the proxy server.
I want my http server to be named 124.124.124.124.
In the http server I wish to set up my virtualhosts like this:
How do I get my proxy to grab the data from the http server?
If I do like this I will only make another request to my proxy server.
If I do like this, only the first page in the httpd.conf in my http server will work.
Do I need to setup a different DNS server for the proxy server? I would hate that. Perhaps use hosts-file in proxy. Or maybe I can use sub-domains?

I currently use 192.168.1.10:85 to refer to my localhost ip address, and I setup port-based virtualhosts because this seems like the only feasible/practical way to view this from within Windows XP on my Debian's VirtualBox. Is anyone else aware of some advanced techniques in which I could view it by the ServerName instead? I would assume I have to hook it up to some sort of DNS server? I know I can also edit the hosts file in my Windows XP and point certain urls to my IP address, but it will always resolve to the primary default virtualhost.

I was wondering if we could cd in the directory of the PATH variable. For example, if I type in echo $DISPLAY. It will give me /tmp/launch-3ee4fg/org.x:0
Is there any way that I can just take the value '/tmp/launch-3ee4fg/' from the output of $DISPLAY and exclude out the filename to the end of the command. I tried using the read command and the IFS variable..apparently IFS does not recognise / I guess.

using FTP Directory mounted, thus it could make my life easier. And the fact, it's not.well, I'm putting in the /etc/fstab file to be like this;
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
[code]....
in a conclusion; every file i copy, move, to that mounted directory will fail. and the error given is that Input/Output error message only.Is it this effect, due to the script i put on fstab is wrongly?
NB: I'm using Ubuntu Server here.

I've got a Ubuntu 10.04 Server edition installed as a VMWare ESXi VM. It's been working great for about 6 months. This morning, after not making any changes, I started seeing some errors. First problem was that my website (managed by apache2) was offline. SSH/ftp didn't work either. So I go through the console through vSphere. Tried a quick ifconfig, and I got this:
Code:
bash: /sbin/ifconfig: No such file or directory
mmk. Tried ls /sbin/ifconfig, got this:
Code:
bash: /bin/ls: No such file or directory
[Code].....
Commands known to work: dir, vi, dmesg, rmdir, mkdir, ifup (but it then returns ifconfig not found), shutdown, reboot, fsck (but I chose no to prevent damage) Commands known NOT to work: ifconfig, ps, ls

I am trying to setup 2 individual FTP users. They should both have access to the same directory. They both need to be able to read/write into the directory. But, I want them not to be able to write to each other's files (e.g. delete, remove, rename, etc.).
So let's say the shared directory is: /home/ftp/shared/
UserA needs read/write access to /home/ftp/shared/. UserA should only have write access to his own files.
UserB also needs read/write access to /home/ftp/shared/. UserB should only have write access to his own files.
It would be a unix box of sorts, but that is the only restriction. I could use whatever software. I am currently thinking pure-ftpd or vsftp but I am open to all ideas.

I'm trying to jail a sftp user. All I want is for my daughter-in-law to be able to download pictures of my grandson on his step-uncle's motorcycle. But I don't want her browsing around. She's not a techie, but she's smart enough to catch on how WinSCP is looking at my files. I've set up the jail using jk_init, adding ssh, sftp, bash, netutils, basicshell, jk_lsh.
The physical root of the jail is owned by root, as are all the binaries loaded by the jk_init. The user's home directory is owned recursively by the user and is writable only by the owner. The passwd and group files are in the jailed /etc and populated by the user's lines. Shell is bash, and bash is there too. The error message must be coming from some other problem that's not notifying, but what?
