Ubuntu Servers :: Virtual Box And Installing 64bit System
Aug 1, 2011
I've got a problem with installing 64bit systems on Virtual Box. It is reporting that my 64 bit virtualization abilities (something like v-AMD or so) are present but not enabled. There is also an advice to enable it in the bios but I can't find anything like this actually. My motherboard is Asus M4A88TD-M EVO with quad-core AMD processor. IS there any trick to enable this feature somewhere in the system or it is a limitation of my hardware?

I have been using for over a year now, my 64-bit computer first with Fedora 8 and now with Fedora 10 with 2Gb of RAM just fine. Today I purchased an extra 2Gb for the system and upon installation from the GRUB screen Fedora 10 simply won't boot. It does boot with 3Gb, and it doesn't matter which stick I use for the 3Gb configuration, or what slot do I put the sticks into the motherboard, however if I place the four sticks, F10 simply won't boot. Should I pass a command line argument tot he kernel? If so, which?

I have a client with a pair of Supermicro 6025B-T servers that he wants to have Ubuntu 10.10 64bit Server running on for VM/Cloud experimenting. He needs these to be set up RAID 10. I can go into the Adaptec utility and make the array and make it bootable and get to the point in the installer where it asks me if I want to use the SATA array - then it gets to the partitioning screen and the array is nowhere to be found.

I have the simple fortran codes as:
Code:
integer :: i1=2455121, i2=2455121
real :: s1=0.19123840, s2=0.20749992
real*8 :: a1, a2
a1=i1+s1; a2=i2+s2
[Code]....
When s1 and s2 are stated with 'real*8', the 64bit and 32bit systems get the same results.

Background: I need some help regarding install X server/apps on a headless(ie. no monitor, no graphic device) server. The server is in fact a virtual one by Amazon EC2. So there's no monitor nor any graphics hardware. Fedora server (6, i believe) is pre-packaged. The problem is that I want to be running a server app with a GUI. The app won't start without the GUI (and I probably need to tweak a few things through its GUI too).
I plan on setting up very very bare minimal X on the server and then uses NX for remote access. Can somebody shed some light here?
Simply put, my questions are:
1) What would be the minimal list of package i need to install?
2) Where can I find docs about installing and setting up NX? I could only find very fragmented/outdated docs about it.

I have an HP Compaq nx6125 laptop, which has an AMD Turion 64 2200MHz processor, running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have installed the VMware Workstation 6.5.2 [full] trial and am attempting to install Fedora 11 on a virtual machine.
I understand that the Turion processor is a 64 bit processor, so I downloaded the Fedora 11 x86_64 DVD iso image.
First I have to create a VMware virtual machine (VM) and choose a version for it. If I choose a version that is any of the 64 bit options (for example, "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64-bit", since there are specific options for RHEL but not for Fedora), I get an error message the moment I try to power on the VM and start the install, saying "The buslogic SCSI adapter is not supported for 64-bit guests in this release [...]". Then the VM just shuts down.
I guess this laptop does have a SCSI bus, but my disks are IDE and as far as I can see (System Information) the SCSI bus is not used (?).
On the other hand, if the VM I create is any of the 32-bit option versions, I get what seems to be just a warning, saying that I'm running a 64-bit guest OS (Fedora 11) on a virtual machine configured to run a 32-bit OS, and suggesting I change this to ensure the 64-bit guest OS will function correctly. What would be the risks / downsides of forcing the install anyways?
I will also ask for help on the VMware side, too, and it's not my intention to turn this into a VMware discussion, but I'm just wondering if anybody on the forum has worked with this combination (VMware 6.5.2 and Fedora 11 running within it, preferrable on an HP Compaq 6125 running Windows 7 Ultimate) ? If so, I'd really appreciate some feedback / pointers.
I used to work a lot with Linux back in the days of RH5.2, and it's been a while, plus I'm new to the virtual machine world, so bear with me here.

I've read so many howto's and threads but never managed to get a decent font size on my tty's. Before grub2 I used to use vga=795 (or something like that), but now that isn't working anymore. I have a 24" Samsung screen and the font size is HUGE. Has anyone with same hardware succeeded in setting a decent resolution? I've played around with gfxpayload and all that stuff. I'm using fglrx driver on an up-to-date system.

I am looking for a version of vmware that manages 2 severs at the same time and that mirrors them such that if one goes down we can still work on the second and of course it also works as a backup. Also, must work on a ubuntu server I have looked but there are so many version that I don't know which one is the best.

What would be the advantage of running a 64bit system over a 32bit system? I only have 3GB of ram but plan on kickin another 1GIG into it. But i wanna try 64bit Linux(probably slackware) on it. But first im just wondering what the advantages are people have seen who have used both 32/64bit linux. Speed? Smoothness? And also what are major disadvantages such as compatibility, configuration, etc.

I have a problem similar to the one the poster in [URL]. I can't install Skype and some some other programs. The error message says something like this: lib32stdc++6: Depends: gcc-4.4-base (=4.4.2-3ubuntu1) but 4.4.3-4ubuntu5 will be installed Depends: lib32gcc1 and will not be installed
I just installed 10.04 and almost all settings are at their defaults.

I run a Minecraft server and it uses Java on a VPS that has Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala amd64. I have Java 1.6 running with no problems, however many people say Java 1.7 makes a major performance increase (I have tested this on my Win 7 64x computer) which would help reduce lag that my players encounter. I downloaded the Linux x64 tar ball from [URL] how to install it (no deb or auto-installer).

Yesterday, NVIDIA released a new set of drivers. For ubuntu 10.10, I downloaded 270.41.06. I havent been able to set it up on my fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10.
I have tried the following methods:
1. First changed the settings for updates to accept proposed updates. This is also suggested at [url]
Then installed the additional driver proposed by Ubuntu.
On restart, no login-screen. (Xserver fails to come up!)
2.Edited the repos by adding ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates. Unfortunately 270.41.06 is not the latest driver available there - 270.41.03 is the current version. On adding this repo the driver is searched successfully by synaptic. Installing nvidia-current brings up the driver version to 270.41.03 without any issues.
Nvidia X Server Setting prompts to run the nvidia-xconfig. On doing so a new conf file is created.
On restart, the Ubuntu splash screen is not displayed. Again Xserver fails to start!
3. Finally, I tried installing the .run file provided on Nvidia's website. First, I dropped to a root shell. Then cd'ed to the location where .run file was saved. On running the .run file, the installer asks you to change the run-level to 3. On doing so by telinit 3, the driver starts installing. As soon as I accepted the terms and proceeded to the next screen, a warning was displayed saying the pre-install script had failed!
But the driver installation does proceed to completion.
Even this method failed. The Xserver still does not start. No splash screen.
Currently I am running the system by restarting the Xserver in failsafex mode.

The default (graphical) installer did not work on my PC (i7 quadcore 8 GB DDR3). I have installed Ubuntu using the alternative installer (Desktop, 64 bit) on my external USB drive. I installed grub on the MBR of the second drive (/dev/sdb) as I did not want to touch my (first) Windows disk. After reboot (chosing the USB drive as boot device, else Windows is booted) grub reports an error and enters the rescue mode. I tried all possible combinations of "root=(hdX,Y)" in grub.cfg to no avail.
I repeated the whole procedure but now disconnected the internal HD with Windows. Installation went smooth again (Windows disk was not seen this time), but after reboot (the internal drive connected or not) I again get (slightly different this time) grub error: can not find file.

I am attempting to install Ubuntu on my girlfriends laptop, She is pretty much fed up with windows, and has been seeing me rub linux in her face (Compiz helps haha). The major problem for me is she does not have a CD/DVD drive, Nor do we have USB drives. Daemon tools will let me boot a virtual drive at boot (in theory according to their forum) so this will be my choosen method. The concerns/questions I have are these:
1) If I install from a virtual drive, Will the Ubuntu partition list that as a device and try to load from it? (When I am done, I am deleting windows and thus the drive) will that cause any major issues?
2)MS Will have to stay on the drive for awhile, I plan on shrinking it down as far as possible (Most likly with gparted) then formatting it as EXT and extending Ubuntu to occupy the whole space, Can gparted do that? (I've only used it with Linux, Never tried with MS)
3) Is there anything I should do PRIOR to installing Ubuntu, other then backing up files?
