View 9 Replies View RelatedMy main computers are still on 8.04 and 8.10 versions, and it's certainly time to upgrade with a new LTS version 10.04. So, what's the best way to upgrade? I certainly want to maintain my current setup and data for apps like my email (I use sylpheed) and Firefox.
Should I just use Update Manager? It is currently offering me 9.04, for example, does that mean I will need to upgrade through each version a step at a time, or can I jump some versions?
My installatio with 250mg root partition is nealy full after an updrade of linux-generic which has kept the old kernel and modules.
I can easily delete them or is the a way to instruct apt-get or dpkg to only keep the current version?
I upgraded my Ubuntu server install to 11.04 and could not connect to anything outside of it. Its a weird issue because if I run a ping against it as its booting up for about 20 seconds or so I get responses, then it says unreachable. (This is a wired connection by the way). If i login fast enough on the server itself I can ping google for instance and get a response, then it just stops and says host unreachable from that point on.
I then decided to setup a fresh install on the system (virtual server) and I get the same issue. All throughout the install it connected fine, just up until it fully restarts. Its like some service starts that just kills the connection. I rolled back to 10.10 on my other instance and it can connect fine.. Ive been trying everything I can find on the forums but I am pretty stumped by this,
I'm looking to remove my current version of Java and upgrade to the newest versions of Java and hopefully any other components like flash etc.

I have just one gripe about running Hardy on this VPS: PHP 5.2 is horribly outdated!! It has 5.2.4 in the repos, whilst 5.2.14 was released a while ago. As an LTS server distro you would expect these kinds of packages to be updated to ensure security? Please don't tell me I can use Dotdeb, it was never meant for Ubuntu and I have had problems with it in the past.
View 5 Replies View RelatedDuring install of 9.10 server, both ethernet adapters were found. One is built-in to the motherboard, the second is on a PCIe slot. Selected the on-board adapter for eth0 during install, set fixed IP on the web, connected, updated, etc. w/ no problems. The second adapter is for the LAN.BUT, on first and subsequent reboots after installation complete the second adapter is not detected at all, as if it were not even plugged into the PCI or the driver not loaded. This happens on either of two slots, with two different adapters, Intel or Netgear, both pretty recent, and both of which are detected and work in a different box. 'Ethtool eth1' says device not found.This is a fairly recent motherboard 3N78EM).Since the adapter was found during installation I'm assuming that the problem is not with not the board. I've built several server systems with two or three ethernet adapters and have never run into this situation.

I'm not to clear on the difference between LTS versions and other versions, but think I may want to go with LTS. Can someone tell me if my thinking is correct given the following situation: I have some very cool, but very expensive software installed with a group license from my school, a school which I am not going to be attending for too much longer. So I want to go as long as possible without reinstalling Ubuntu, because once the product is licensed it will be licensed until I reinstall Ubuntu (or I uninstall the program). So I think this is going to require me keep the Ubuntu version I install as long as possible.
So in this case, should I go with 10.04LTS or should I just install Natty Narwhal and keep that as long as possible? It looks like 10.04LTS will be "supported" longer, but I'm not exactly clear on all that "supported" entails. Presumable it means security and software updates will be available for 10.04LTS for much longer than 11.x versions? So I'm thinking I should go with 10.04LTS
Is my thinking correct in going with 10.04LTS? Edit: It was pointed out that this would be against my contractual agreements. Which I suppose is probably true.
I have created a folder including some html link pages in /test/htlink . Now I want to create a soft link of that folder as htlink -> /test/htlink in /var/www/html . Now when I m browsing the folder , its erroring (404 Not Found) folder is not found on the server . I have given 777 permission on every file-folder in /test . No firewall & no SELINUX .

I installed 9.04 then tried to upgrade to 9.10 and it froze so I had to reboot. Since then I have not been able to re-install 9.04 or see my partition. Everytime I try to reinstall it says and shows that it can't find the partition like there isn't a hard drive installed.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo today I decided I would upgrade my computer to 10.10 from 10.04. Everything was going great until after the restart. As the title suggests, when booting I get the message "error: the symbol 'grub_xputs' not found." and a grub rescue shell.From this shell, is there anyway that I can load Ubuntu so I can reinstall grub, or do whatever needs to be done? Unfortunately booting to a livecd does not seem to be much of an optiEDIT: After not finding anything I eventually gave up and took a dvd-rom drive out of another computer to get into the live cd and was able to solve the problem through there using kansasnoob's linked solution, so I guess my problem is solved, but only by changing the conditions of the problem.

I was given a computer that has the Ubuntu operating system installed I was able to at least get online with it. I tried to upgrade it (don't know what version was installed on it) using the Update Manager. When the computer restarted I got two error messages:
Error no suitable mode found
Error unknown command "terminal"
The system then went on through the Ubuntu logo screen but then I got a black screen. I couldn't get the computer to do anything. How to at least restore the computer back to its previous state before trying to upgrade.
Can not boot after upgrade - file not found 'loadfont' I have a 10.04 system that I installed the update for. Instead of doing the restart now option I choose to do a shutdown and upon a reboot I get an error and can not boot into Ubuntu.
The error I get is: file not found 'loadfont' unknown command And I get into an endless cycle of it if I try to boot into Ubuntu..can boot into windows fine as this is an Wubi install. Does anyone have a fix for me? This is on a work computer and I need a fix immediately. I have read about the Wubi issues with 10.10 but this is 10.04 not 10.10...?
I was upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 and now my HDD can't boot at all to the 2.6.34-rc6 kernel, I get dumped to the busybox shell, and when I select the 2.6.30.9 I get "The hard drive for / is not ready or not present."
I can see the drive fine with fdisk -l, /dev/sda1 is my HDD, but when booting something isn't working right. Also, is there a way to make GRUB 2 automatically show the menu so I don't have to hold down the shift key?
I performed the Fedora 15 Upgrade from Fedora 14 which worked fine except when I reboot the system does not find Fedora 15 i.e. I see the Fedora 14 Kernel and not the Fedora 15 Kernel in the reboot sequence.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI used pre upgrade command then executed the upgrade (it took more than 4 hours) and I had a success message at the end saying that I have now to reboot. But now I have no more Xorg working, and I had to boot from the live CD to mount the LVM disk to report this problem (thanks to the live CD).
Looking at the Xorg.0.log the reported error is:

The PCI device has a kernel module claiming it.
This driver cannot operate until it has been unloaded
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
How I must do now to get back Xorg? Check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. I tried to remove and re-install Xorg, without success. Then I installed kmod-nvidia and executed nvidia-xconfig. The log says that I have to configure the kernel without nvidiafb support, but I don't know how to do it, and even if it is a good idea. I noticed that if I remove the /etc/X11/xorg** files, I can use startx but no much more.

now 11.3 is out, how do i upgrade from 11.2 (i presume theres an upgrade path via repo's than dvd/cd install)? i've tried 'Software Update', but comes out with no found updates.
done 11.4 update from DVD on my two laptops and I'm trying to do my home machine now.Problem is that the DVD update does not find any repos. I told the update system to set up wired network using DHCP and everything seems OK, when I check the box to use separate media during installation the system won't find any community repositories and when I specify URL it simlply won't connect to the repo. Only OSS card is seen in Xfce mixer, and OSS works, but no alsa card.I have a Via82xx onboard chip and a SB Audigy 1 [SB0092], Emu10K1. Via was set up with an alias as the first to load. All this worked perfectly in 13.0. Now aplay gives the following message:Quote:

I'm using Slackware current. I've updated my current after about two months from the last update, and since there was a huge number of changes I'm having some problems. In particular, I've forgot (my fault!) to give a "slackpkg install-new" before rebooting, so now I'm getting stuck...
Installpkg now claims a "rev" command, but I cannot figure how to find it, since the Slackware package browser on the website is still broken (when will it be available?!?!). Now, each time I try to install or upgrade a new package, I get this error:
/sbin/upgradepkg: line 41: rev: command not found
/sbin/installpkg: line 59: rev: command not found
Where can I find the package containing "rev"?

This is a problem about linux-kernel-3.16-0-4-amd64 and LVM, I guess. I decided to write this here in case other users who installed their debian system with encryption enabled experience this problem with a recent kernel upgrade.
I use debian jessie. Today I gave the command:

After this upgrade my computer cannot boot anymore.

I used rescue environment on debian jessie netinst iso and decrypted the partition and took a backup of my /home. Now I have not much to lose if I reinstall my system but I still want to fix this problem if possible.
I have reinstalled the kernel using debian jessie netinst rescue iso but nothing changed.
I have Timeshift snapshots located at /home/Timeshift but timeshift --rescue command cannot find a backup device, it sees the device as crypted. If I could restore a snapshot it would be very easy to go back in time and get rid of this problem. It would not be a real solution, however.
There is not any old kernel option in GRUB menu. So removing the latest one does not seem as an option.
