Ubuntu Installation :: Partition Not Found After Upgrade?

Feb 10, 2010

I installed 9.04 then tried to upgrade to 9.10 and it froze so I had to reboot. Since then I have not been able to re-install 9.04 or see my partition. Everytime I try to reinstall it says and shows that it can't find the partition like there isn't a hard drive installed.

Ubuntu Installation :: 'grub_xputs' Not Found After Upgrade?

Oct 14, 2010

So today I decided I would upgrade my computer to 10.10 from 10.04. Everything was going great until after the restart. As the title suggests, when booting I get the message "error: the symbol 'grub_xputs' not found." and a grub rescue shell. From this shell, is there anyway that I can load Ubuntu so I can reinstall grub, or do whatever needs to be done? Unfortunately booting to a livecd does not seem to be much of an optiEDIT: After not finding anything I eventually gave up and took a dvd-rom drive out of another computer to get into the live cd and was able to solve the problem through there using kansasnoob's linked solution, so I guess my problem is solved, but only by changing the conditions of the problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Option Found For Specific Partition

Oct 31, 2010

To be honest, I am trying to install Linux Mint, but since this is based on Ubuntu, and I am comfortable with Ubuntu on my VM I decided to label it Ubuntu.

I have a 235 HDD and it is partitioned like this:
C: 150 GB (Windows) NTFS
D: 70 GB (Data) NTFS
G: 15 GB (for my not yet installed Linux) NTFS

I also followed this tutorial and now I have some sort of LiveCD inside my USB: [URL]. So, now I have a pen drive with an Ubuntu LiveCD and a 15GB ready for my Ubuntu!

This is what I do:
1 - connect pen to computer
2 - turn on computer
3 - pen start running and I load Linux like a LiveCD (yey!)
4 - Linux loads and I wait
5 - I click "Install linux"
6 - I configure the language, time zone and keyboard with no problems
7 - Disk partitioning ... it offers me 2 choices:
7.1 - Erase entire disk and install Ubuntu
7.2 - Manually partitioning: but drive C:, D: and G: do not appear!!!

I want to install my Linux on driver G:, but I don't find a "Install Linux in this specific partition" option!

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade From F11 To F12 - No Screen Found

Feb 18, 2010

I used pre upgrade command then executed the upgrade (it took more than 4 hours) and I had a success message at the end saying that I have now to reboot. But now I have no more Xorg working, and I had to boot from the live CD to mount the LVM disk to report this problem (thanks to the live CD).

Looking at the Xorg.0.log the reported error is:
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01@00:00:0
The PCI device has a kernel module claiming it.
This driver cannot operate until it has been unloaded
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

How I must do now to get back Xorg? Check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. I tried to remove and re-install Xorg, without success. Then I installed kmod-nvidia and executed nvidia-xconfig. The log says that I have to configure the kernel without nvidiafb support, but I don't know how to do it, and even if it is a good idea. I noticed that if I remove the /etc/X11/xorg** files, I can use startx but no much more.

Fedora Installation :: F12 Upgrade - Boot Failure / No Root Device Found

Jun 1, 2010

I'm a long time Linux user. Finally got around to upgrading my Fedora 11 system to Fedora 12 by using the 'preupgrade' tool. The upgrade appeared to go well (downloaded packages, rebooted into installer, etc). However, now that the upgrade is complete, I'm unable to boot my system.

Here's my configuration:
/dev/sda (80Gb)
200Mb /boot partition (ext3)
52Gb / partition (ext4 - managed as logical volume)
2Gb swap partition (managed as logical volume)
20Gb /spare partition (ext3 - managed as logical volume) .....

All worked fine under Fedora 11 for the last few months. Grub now presents me with 'Fedora' and 'Windows XP' boot options. The /boot/grub/menu.lst file is essentially the same as it was for Fedora 11, except for the different kernel versions, etc. The boot sequence shows the Fedora bubble (??) and gets about 80% full when the screen goes black and the message displayed is:

No root device found
Boot has failed, sleeping forever
If I boot Windows, all works fine.

Am able to boot using a SystemRescueCD disk. The disks all look okay and I can mount/modify all partitions, etc. The grub menu.lst file read as follows (sorry, typed in, not copied):
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE)

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 8.04 To 10.04 To Another Partition

Oct 21, 2010

Is it possible to upgrade (in my case from 8.04 to 10.04) into another partition?

Explanation: I have a system with 2 200GB disks:

Disk 1:
1. swap (4 GB)
2. / (20 GB)
3. /home (40 GB)

Disk 2:
1. /srv (200GB)

Is it possible to create a 4th partition on the first disk and to let the upgrade procedure to use the new partition as target?

The advantages will be:
1. Possible to execute without disturbing the running system.
2. Possible to keep the original partition as a fallback.
3. Very simple activation/fallback procedure: reboot on the correct partition.

I must say that I'm using Sun Solaris at work and I'm doing this operation regulary with the "Live upgrade" tool.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Lucid With /home Partition?

May 13, 2010

I just need some clarification on the best upgrade path for me. I currently have Karmic installed with a separate partition for /home. I want to do a clean install of lucid with the CD.

What's the safest way to ensure my /home partition remains untouched? Should I install lucid overtop the karmic partition and then indicate a mount point for the other partition? or should I leave /home alone completely during installation and then just manually configure the mount point after install?

Edit: I had previously upgraded from jaunty to karmic via the update manager. This worked well but Karmic has felt very buggy overall so I feel a clean install might be best. although the audio is silent when the live cd boots :S

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Wubi To Real Partition?

May 25, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu NR 10.04 LTS for almost 1 years now with dual-boot with Windows XP by Wubi and I had great time using it. Now I want to experience the full potential of Ubuntu by creating another partition just for Ubuntu alone since I heard Wubi makes a lot of trouble and works slower than independent Ubuntu install.

Here's my question. Should I really create another partition to get full potential of Ubuntu or should I stick with wubi? I haven't got any problem running Ubuntu with Wubi but my video playback sometimes gone haywire which didn't happen in windows especially .mkv files

If I should create a partition, how do I want to shrink Drive C: to get enough free space for another partition? Mine was Windows XP so it doesn't have shrink option in Disk Managament unlike Vista/7.

And last question... Can Ubuntu run Window games or MMORPG smoothly like Counter Strike and WarcraftIII? I did try to play it before but it run too slower in Ubuntu. I used Netbook Eee PC 900HA, 2GB RAM, dual-boot Windows XP Home Edition with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 Lucid Lnyx LTS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Mount Downloaded Home Partition After Upgrade

Code:
sudo mount -o loop -t auto /mnt/storage/home.img /mnt/oldhome/
but I get an error of wrong fs type, bad option or bad superblock.
fdisk -l shows:

Code:
Disk /mnt/storage/home.img: 0 MB, 0 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 0 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /mnt/storage/home.img doesn't contain a valid partition table. But in nautilus it shows it as the full 23.6 gb its supposed to be?

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed Upgrade: Partition Locked As Read-only?

Nov 26, 2010

I was updating from 10.04 to 10.10 earlier today when my laptop shutoff in the middle. I fixed a grub error by reinstalling it with a live-cd, and found out I had a "kernel panic-not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on" waiting for me. I booted an alternative kernel and tried fixing things from there, but got "general error mounting filesystem". So, I tried a live-cd and when I mount the partition, it is read-only. I tried running fcsk to no availThe only thing I could find helpful was this."It's probably because your filesystem has suffered a failure - it is configured by default (in /etc/fstab) to remount as read-only in such cases in order to minimise the risk of data loss."

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 9.04 To 10.04 Using A Clonezilla Hard Drive Partition?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm trying to "upgrade" from ubuntu 9.04 to ubuntu 10.04.2 via a clonezilla (using a maverick usb clonezilla software with it's vmlinuz and initrd.img). but this clonezilla is not from a bootable usb flash drive, usb drive or CD, it's from the hard drive.

Here's what I have:

1) one 500gig drive with a primary partition under LVM. this partition has a 490gig root partition (ubuntu-root) and a 10 gig swap partition (ubuntu-swap_1). It has an extended partition (/dev/sda2) that's not under LVM consisting of one logical drive (/dev/sda5) that is the /boot partition.

2) I've upgraded the grub to grub2 (version 1.96) which has better features.

3) I've deleted the swap and reconfigured this partition with a name of (livehd) and it has an ext3 filesystem. I've copied the clonezilla software to this partition which also has the ubuntu 10.04.2 image that I want to restore to the root partition.

4) I've modified the existing grub2 using the 40-custom file so that the grub menu has the "Clonezilla Ubuntu 10.04.2 upgrade" entry in it.

5) the initrd.img from clonezilla has LVM support since I opened up the image to a directory using "gzip -d -c /boot/initrd.img|cpio -i" to check it.

6) grub2 sees the (ubuntu-root), (ubuntu-livehd), (hd0,1), (hd0), and (hd0,5) devices and can list (ls) their directories

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Lucid From Wubi Install To Real Partition?

Jun 4, 2010

I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.

I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).

There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.

I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.

Is there anyone who can suggest if :

1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?

2. Any other way I can do this ??

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade From 11 To 12 Via Preupgrade / Mirrors Return "HTTP Error 404: Not Found"?

Sep 21, 2010

I`m having a problem with upgrading my Fedora 11 to either Fedora 12 or Fedora 13. When i start preupgrade, it lists all packages that need to be upgraded, but then it ends with the message that none of the mirrors can be found. I`m seeing the messages in the console, and indeed all the mirrors return "HTTP Error 404: Not Found". Any idea how to change this and eventually do an upgrade?. I also downloaded the Fedora 13 DVD, and tried to upgrade that way, but it never showed me the window which must give me the option to upgrade instead of doing a fresh install. The explanation in the official website clearly shows that this window exist, but after several tries with the DVD I did not get it.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 To 11.04 Upgrade Fails With "ubuntu-minimal" Cannot Be Found Error

May 6, 2011

I've seen this happening to others, but can't find the original bug report I saw. From what I can tell I'm getting the error because I am using a local mirror, as others have successfully updated using "official" mirrors.

What would cause the installer to differentiate between a local and an official mirror? I'm pulling everything anl.gov has for Lucid, Maverick, and Natty, and had no problems using the local mirror to dist-upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10.

The exact error is:

Code:
After your package information was updated the essential package 'ubuntu-minimal' can not be found anymore.

This indicates a serious error, please report this bug against the 'update- anager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report. main.log from /var/log/dist-upgrade:

Ubuntu :: Partition Not Found Grub Rescue

I've used my windows disk and repaired my mbr and boot (bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fix mbr) multiple times, yet I always get this problem.

Only way I can boot windows is if I leave my install disk in my drive. It will say press any key to boot from cd / dvd I just wait a couple seconds, and it boots into windows. Without the disk, I get the grub problem. I have only 1 partition on my HDD, and that is my windows 7 partition, nothing else.
