Ubuntu Servers :: Postfix Configuration - Send Mail To Other Domains

Let me start off by saying I am experienced with computers, though my knowledge of Linux and networking is limited. I've just recently started setting up a Ubuntu 10.04 server to be a SMTP server. I've followed this guide by the letter: [URL] What I've attempted, to test the server, is the following:
telnet localhost 25
ehlo localhost
(this returns all the desired information) I then do a MAIL FROM my domain which is accepted, and try to do a RCPT TO an external mail server (gmail) to test sending an email. I am then told 'Relay Access Denied'. I'm sure that there's something fundamental that I'm either not understanding or not doing correctly. I simply want an SMTP server that can send to other domains. What do I need to do?

I am trying to make my elastix voip server to send and receive e-mails. It has built in Postfix mail server, and i tried to configure it.I am not sure about some parameters, such as domain and hostname.Either way, i will attach my config file and the errors that i get from log and mail queue as i get them from webmin.

Two exchange servers internally. One is setup for example.com (192.168.1.10) and the other is setup for example2.com (192.168.1.20) Both are behind a single public IP.
I want to use postfix to sit in front of the two exchange servers. Postfix will accept mail for both domains and relay to the appropriate server. I have postfix installed with only defaults at this point.

I set up my mail server using the guide here: [URL] I am able to receive mail, I can send mail locally, but I can't send to external addresses. I want to configure a single mail server to send and receive mail from multiple sub domains of my domain. I've already installed Postfix/Dovecot and it is perfectly working for mydomain.com. And also installed roundcube for Web Mail. Can I further customize this setup to process mail to sub domains? ex- someone@subdomain1.mydomain.com, someone@subdomain2.mydomain.com, someone2@subdomain1.mydomain.com (someone@subdomain1.mydomain.com and someone@subdomain2.mydomain.com are 2 separate users. they should be able to log on to web interface separately)
Currently i use system account names as email user names. (ex - systemusername@mydomain.com). The only MX record in my domain DNS pointed to current server (mailhost.mydomain.com). I read about postfix virtual domains. but couldnt figure out how to use it to achive my target. I do not need configuration details. Just explain me the way to do it. I can do the rest my self.

I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 and using Postfix 2.7 with Dovecot's SASL. The issue is when sending e-mail it takes a bit of time to send. LIke for it to get connected it takes around 15.20 seconds. How can I reduce this delay so it can be sent faster?

I have spent the last 24 hours searching the internet for an issue to resolve my problem. I have tried the verious solutions posted by people and followed endless amounts of tutorials
In the end i followed [URL] line by line
This allowed me to recieve email fine, but only send email locally.
I either get a "Relay access denied" message, or as of last night is is now "Recipient Address Rejected"

I'm running a server with Ubuntu 10.04 and I have installed postfix and courier. The server can recieve mail and I can fetch them using POP, but when I try to send mail it doesn't work. Postfix itself can send email if i telnet from localhost and I am using my ISP as a relay because they block port 25. I'm using outlook 2007 on my client computer and it just says that the server rejects the login attempt and tells me to check my username and password. Postfix listens on port 12 as well because the client connection also has outgoing on port 25 blocked. I have tried to use telnet to connect to the server, and I can connect. This is what I get:

Now what? I've tried searching for the answer but all I can come up with is AUTH PLAIN or AUTH LOGIN, but I don't know what to type after that.

I have a server with a domain running and im trying to resolve the mail server but i can't see where to start. I use OpenSuse 11.2. Basically, for starting, i want postfix to send incoming emails to a php script or perl. for outgoing emails i guess that i could use php mail function and i will see what else to have. I configured the dns. I do a dig.mydomain.tld MX and i get the following:
mydomain.tld3600INMX0 mail.mydomain.tld
mail.mydomain.tld 3600INAmyNumericalIp
So now my system is receiving MX content but i dont know what to do.

I'm running a server with two sites which both need to be able to send emails. Currently I have Postfix set up to send email via Google Apps. This works fine, but Google's servers ignore the From: address I specify and substitute the one I logged in with. Is there a way to make Postfix log into Google Apps with a different username based on what site the email is coming from? The server does not recieve any mail itself; Google recieves it and we have it set to forward it to the appropriate person's real email address. I'm only worried about sending mail.
(Postfix is not a requirement here, so if there's another mailer that can do this better, I'm open to ideas. However, sending email directly from the server isn't an option as it's a residential IP address and blocked by most of the big email providers.)

I would like to setup postfix to act as a relay for the outgoing mails of a couple of servers each serving it's own domain.The mails we are talking about are standard administrative emails like user registration, password reset request. The volume of those mails will naturally grow as the site grows. Which for me poses the problem that depending on the growth of the site you will sooner or later hit the quotas imposed by (my otherwise preferred) providers like GMail or smtp.com.
So what I need is a mail relay that will only accept mails from authenticated clients from hosts in its access list and relay their mail without restrictions. Is that possible with postfix? What has to be changed in the config and what are the pitfalls?

I have a server with a static IP that I use as a sendmail server. The problem is that port 25 is exposed. As a result, anybody can login to the SMTP server and send mail from my domain as a user that does not exist as well as email from other non-existant domains. I'm sure there are sendmail options that I can enable to do some checks, like if the user exists on that server or if the domain is the same on the server, etc. I was wondering if you guys can mention a few that I can add to my sendmail.mc file?
I have thought about auth login, the problem is if auth login is on my public port then I won't be able to receive email from gmail because it would be unauthenticated. Also, I only have 1 mail server. I know the ideal solution is to have 2 mail servers. One for outgoing mail/internal mail server where you can enable auth login and the other for incoming mail which just acts as the relay to the internal mail server. That way spammers can't login to send mail out. That's another question I had, how do I configure sendmail to only send email out/in?
Anyhow, so I have to make do with 1 mail server for now. So I decided to add a few rules on iptables. I grabbed the IP range that gmail uses when I receive mail from then and added it to my iptables with the following command.

I'm having a problem with a new install of postfix... it won't relay mail to external domains. Internal mail is fine.I'm using virtual_mailbox_domains so that I can have multiple domains, and I've set dovecot to use local files with encrypted passwords.Here's my main.cf

I have Postfix + Unix Accounts + Virtual Domains. I have a bunch of domains hosted on my machine, let's call them [URL] [URL] and [URL]... etc Until know, domain2.com, domain3.com were mapped in virtual domains to [URL] So this is how /etc/postfix/virtual looks like:

Like I said, all mail accounts are unix accounts, so, if for example I have the user "paul" this user will receive e-mail for ALL DOMAINS. [URL]But as it turns out, I now need a COMPLETELY ISOLATED domain... let's call it [URL]. So If I create a new user, let's call it "steve" I want steve to receive e-mail ONLY on [URL] and not on all others.
I would have to redo the whole thing from the beginning. I'd have to comment out the $mydestination parameter in the main.cf file and start using only virtual domains. So if I have the following users: paul, steve, sally, megan, jenny and I want paul and steve to ONLY receive mail for domain1.com, sally and megan to receive mail for domain2.com and jenny to receive mail for domainX.com, my /etc/postfix/virtual file would have to look like this:

I'd have to create the unix account and then start modifying the /etc/postfix/virtual file.

I've set up a mail server using Postfix + dovecot. It works just fine sending email to users in my domain. However, I can't send email to external domains (like gmail, yahoo, etc) different than mine. I've tried sending from a remote connection using Evolution and I get the following message on mail.log

When I use sendmail (or, most commonly, a PHP or Perl script uses it) to send to any other domain except my own, it works great. When I use it to send to my own domain, however, it's trying to deliver it to localhost. Problem is, all our mail is handled by an Exchange server on a different machine, so I really don't want If I run sendmail manually for a test message to myself, here's how it comes up after the message is closed out:

The message then gets dropped into my box at /var/mail/xxxx, but that's really not helpful to me -- I need to to connect to that other machine to deliver the mail there. This machine isn't used as a mail server at all. Also, if it's trying to send to a username that doesn't have an account on this server (we have many), it just fails entirely with "user unknown" (that makes sense, as there are only a couple of user accounts on the web server). how to get sendmail to connect to our mail server instead of "local"?

I'm having a problem with Postfix sending email. To be more specific, Postfix sends mail perfect but when my web server running webmail (RoundCube) connects to my mail server to send email, it fails & there is nothing in the logs that explain to me why:

I have recently installed the ISPCP web hosting control panel. It seems that after a while running and testing I can receive but I cannot send e-mail. basically I get an error which goes

what do I need to change in postfix/ dns to send email to one one of the email server hosted by 1and1.
I'm using zenoss to monitor system/ network and devices. I wanted to setup email notification , so I installed postfix. All works fine when I use my private account on yahoo or hotmail. but when I specify email account that is hosted by 1and1 I receive error 421. "

i installed a new server ubuntu server 9.10 with lamp, etc.

i am trying to set up a mail server that will support users in a LAN in my school. I am using postfix on a Mandrakelinux distro.
I can send mail when I am root to the other user on my (same) machine both when in command line (mail command) and on Graphical mail client (Kmail ) but the user (sam) cannot send mail to the root account on either interfaces.
I followed the postfix configuration settings on John_Wiley_-_Redhat_Linux_Networking_and_System_Administration_3rd_Edition.

I am going to try and replace our crappy Windows/imail server with a new ubuntu 10.04 LTS based machine. It will end up with about 400 domains on it with around 3000 users total. 96% of the domains have very light use. 4% of the domains have heavy use but do not send any bulk mail.
Can someone here recommend a mail server software package that would be easy to administrate and easy to backup/replicate? All we need is POP with webmail. We do not need IMAP or want any group/collaborative functions.
What do you usually use for anti-spam on a linux mail server? We want to keep it all open source if possible.
For hardware we are looking at an HP DL360 G5 with dual Xeons, 4G of ram, and the P400 controller with 6 SAS 15k drives. Do you think a server like this will be able to handle the mail on linux? Volume is around 400k messages a day inbound with about 10% being legit/90% being spam. The server will be dedicated to mail hosting and will not host websites.
