I am looking for some monitoring tools (such as disk usage,memory usage, cpu,etc) for my linux machines. I came across two tools, cacti and splunk.Which one is better ? It will be nice if you can also let me know the reason.

I have several machines that backup content to this server via scheduled cronjobs and I'm curious to see if the machine is hitting a bottleneck under load.I attempted to setup cacti on one of our LAMP servers and had a miserable time due to running PHP 5.3 and deprecated function issues.Can anyone recommend an alternative keeping in mind I have only very basic experience with SNMP?

Our primary sever is centos with WHM installation and hosts about 600 websites.(need to monitor mysql & port 80 on this.)The secondary one is windows server with virtuzzu installation and host about 15 windows VPS (The server crashing some times and we need to findout its out of service ASAP .)Should we use monitoring websites such as hypersins.com or siteuptime.com (which is a little expensive for us especially because of international sms rates.) or there is nice tools we can easily configure and use !

I am currently using the built-in firewall to deny all traffic other than ICMP ping/pong and TCP traffic on those specific ports.I am looking for a graphical application which will let me monitor any connections being made to my server in order to keep an eye out for possible security concerns. To be more specific, I'd like to be able to see the source IP addresses, TCP/UDP ports, and individual bandwidth in use by external connections being made to the server, along with any other information that might be helpful in identifying a possible intrusion attempt.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI didn't setup our old system but that server has since been retired due to hardware failure, but we have some new webervers, and a new postgtres database server in place which I need monitoring. Some items include database size, transactions per second, io stats, memory monitoring, or as the DBA put "anything I can get". We had used CACTI in the past for these items, but I didn't do the setup and sondering if that is what is recommended, or something else. I am looking at groundwork open source which include nagios, etc. but figured I would consult the uforums since all these servers are running userver 9.x and 10.x .

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a third party program (tightvnc) which I want to monitor and detect if it loses a connection with a client. I don't care if the client has the program open but isn't doing anything with it, I only want to know if the actual TCP connection is lost.
Since TCP takes forever to die on it's own I was thinking the best way to detect if a connection is lost is by bandwidth the bandwidth on the tcp port allocated to the VNC connection. Are there any tools built in to redhat (RHEL 5.2) which I could use to do this? Since I don't have full control of the operating system I would prefer to use built in tools rather then trying to get a new tool installed.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to install some administrative tools under the System -> Administration tab of the Desktop edition of Ubuntu, so that xinetd, chkconfig, netservices, etc can be controlled? I am left with an uneasy feeling about my Desktop version, and finding that it is running services that I really do not want to allow. Apache2 is running for example, but I really am not a web server (yet). Another service is strigi, the indexer. I prefer to have it turned off at times.What administrative tools does Ubuntu offer that can be placed in the sys-admin tab?

Everything works from public access until I try to link to a CVS repository. The rancid CVS repository is set up as a separate server (virtualhost). It appears the referring link causes a DNS error (105: Server Not Found) when the CVS repository server is accessed from the public address. Things work fine when accessing via localhost.

View 3 Replies View RelatedHaving been a long-time Linux supporter, it was a no-brainer for me to push Linux as the OS when it was time to move my company's website(s) from an external host to an internal server. My company ponied up the bucks for an HP Proliant DL180 G5 server (this was about a year ago) upon which I installed Slackware 12.1 (I kinda default to Slackware, although in the past I've also used RedHat on the server and openSUSE on the desktop).
Well, it's now time to upgrade the OS on the server. Perhaps I'm a little late to the game on this, but I just recently found out about Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5. Bad Oracle ju-ju aside, it looked to be a very good and stable server distro, especially when you consider the availability of Oracle support for it. So I've since installed OEL to a non-production server and have been testing it out.It looks to be a good match for my needs.
However, since installing OEL on my test server I've installed Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 on my home desktop (a 1.86ghz Intel Core 2 Duo HP xw4400 workstation) and in a VirtualBox VM on my work desktop (a 3.2ghz Intel Core i3 iMac) and... holy crap, it's the best desktop Linux I've ever had the pleasure of using. It will certainly replace Slackware as my default "go-to" Linux distro. Which has made me wonder about the Ubuntu Server offering and if it might not be a better fit for my webserver in the same way that Ubuntu Desktop is a better fit for my workstation.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to pull down another server distro, install it, and test it unless I'm reasonably certain that it's going to give OEL a run for its money. So I turn to the forums and the knowledge of the users who frequent them: is Ubuntu Server a strong enough contender to OEL that I should take a more serious look at it? Or, like I'm hearing about the latest Ubuntu Netbook edition, would it not be worth my time if I'm happy with OEL so far?
I switched on bandwidth monitoring on my Ubuntu Server via Webmin on interface eth1. Unfortunately this has filled my disk by writing huge syslog, debug and kernel.log files. How do I switch it off? I can't see a way of doing it in Webmin.

But the installation instruction says install this on webserver01 and that on webserver02. I only have one server and want to monitor it remotely from a simple browser. Is this possible or does Nagios need at least two separate servers? Can't it just run it on my one server?

Now that I have more computers I am looking at new solutions to manage the proliferation.My Linux machine has been replaced and its now much more powerful than before but its still a 32-bit processor. No problem as I am not using anything unorthodox outside the LAMP stack with a few PHP add-ons to support graphics.I use SAMBA so I can edit web sites easily with Windows tools.So now given a Windows Server, who should be king server and have everybody on the same page so to speak.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running ASSP on Ubuntu 10.04.1 it's mostly working fine. I have one problem which has been bugging me for some time. I don't want to filter outbound mail, but if I can relay (proxy) my outbound mail through ASSP, then it can automatically add to the whitelist.
As ASSP is a proxy, I need a server to send it to once ASSP receives it. I've tried my ISP, but this failed and they weren't willing to confirm if a connection attempt was received at their end.
Current setup
Inbound
mx -> router -> ASSP -> Exchange 2003
Outbound
Exchange 2003 -> mx
I'd like to setup outbound as either
Exchange 2003 -> ASSP -> <ISP> SMTP relay
Exchange 2003 -> ASSP -> <relay running on Ubuntu eg postfix>
Can anyone help me with troubleshooting steps or a better suggestion for how I can set this up. I'd love to know why my ISP setup didn't work, but I don't know a tool for monitoring IP traffic in Ubuntu SE, in windows I use Wireshark is there any equivalent I can setup for Ubuntu or a tool I can use in windows which will show all traffic, Ubuntu and windows server are on the same netgear switch, not sure it's smart enough to copy all traffic to another port for monitoring.
I have a freshly installed, updated Fedora 11 installation for which the VMWare Tools fails. It can't compile what it needs, either. It's running under ESXi 3.x.
