I currently have a server running Windows Home Server and was wanting to know if Ubuntu Server could do the following requirements I currently enjoy
1. Media Streaming, to multiple devices simultaniously i.e. pc/xbob360/PS3 all at the same time. Possibly re-encoding OTF.
2. Remote Access, not just to the server but linking(so i can rdp to my main rig through the server from any internet location) to other systems on the "Home" Network both Linux and Windows.
3. Drive Pooling with redundancy, I want to be able to add and remove HDD and just have it expand the pool so current folders can just grow, but also have it duplicate or make redundant copies so if a HDD fails it can still be recovered.
4. Backup of machines on the network, either manual or scheduled, of both Linux and Windows machines
5. App sharing would be a plus but not required, so I could run a Linux app from the server seamlessly on my windows pc.
6. Basic file storage and browsable structure from windows machines.
I realise this may be a tall order and I don't expect it to be easy or straight forward in any way, but I really hate WHS, it has the slowest file access speed of any os i have ever seen, and is so buggy its unbelievable.
I use a headless 8.04 server for media storage. The system is a P4, 2Gb RAM, gigabit network. Some cpu/IO heavy processes are scheduled to run at night, typically the server is at about 3-6% CPU load, but memory is pretty fully used:
Tasks: 95 total, 1 running, 94 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.0%sy, 0.0%ni,100.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 2075584k total, 1944612k used, 130972k free, 30472k buffers
Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 1364788k cached
When playing back media (DVD, MP3) from the server, I find that playback gets interrupted every 10-15 minuted for about 5 seconds, and then resumes.
Any command line tool to create a m3u file from directories?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm building a new file/media server for my household to use, and would like to hear the experiences of others, and suggestions, or links to appropriate howto's. I'll be using two (2) 250 GB Western Digital RE4 drives mirrored via mdadm RAID 1 for the Operating System. The storage area will be handled by four (4) 500 GB Western Digital RE4 drives in a RAID 5 array, managed by an Areca 1210 controller.
What I'd like to configure is a basic Samba file server, on which we have individual user folders, and a shared drive. As well, I'd like to add the ability to manage our movie collection so it can be accessed by the Boxee Box attached to the television. Twonky looks promising (and I don't mind paying the $19.95 for something that works well). However, as this is new to me, there may be other solutions out there that are better, and easier to administer. Moving forward, I'd like to explore the feasibility of configuring LDAP on this machine to authenticate users on the network (perhaps even integrate the mail server somehow), and the remote users (only two) who VPN into the network using the pfSense firewall appliance. There are no Windows servers, so Active Directory is not a factor.
I'm having a very strange problem with my ubuntu apache2 server running wordpress. i want do download media files (from within a flash-mp3-player onsite or by link [url]) but the file transfer just stops after a while. (at least sometimes) at random positions. after that i have to clear the browsers cache and try again.
It is really annoying, though it is my band's website and we want to share our songs with our friends. i checked from several clients, seems to happen everywhere (linux, mac or windows clients)

I am installing server 10.04.1 (non-gui) on an old Dell box. All goes well until it gets to the point of "Install the base system". I get a dialog "Media Change" with asks: Please insert the disk labeled 'Ubuntu-Server 10.04.1 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - Release i386 (20100816)' in the drive /cdrom/ and press enter. I thought that was the disk I had inserted. I looked at the disk in another machine and it appears to be labeled simply "Ubuntu-Server 10.04.1 LTS i386". I did a check of the media before starting the install and have even tried a different DVD reader in the machine as I thought it might be an issue with the drive failing to read the disk. I again and again get the error shown above.

System update v3.21 will disable the console's "Install Other OS" feature, which allowed users to install the Linux operating system. The feature is currently only available in PlayStation 3 models released prior to the "slim" redesign that launched in September 2009. The update will go live on April 1. SCEA's corporate communications director Patrick Seybold notes on the PlayStation Blog the feature is being removed due to "security concerns."
"In addition, disabling the "Other OS" feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system," Seybold wrote. Those who use Linux can choose not to upgrade, however, Sony lists several features that will no longer be available: Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later.Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings) Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later."For those PS3 users who are currently using the "Other OS" feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the "Other OS," as they will not be able to access that data following the update," Seybold added.
I want to install a DLNA server on my ubuntu home server. It will primarily be used for photo browsing on my PS3, but general media support would be nice. (I use Squeezebox server for music.) What are my options, and what are the main difference between them.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new hard drive so that I could convert my XP-only machine into an XP-Ubuntu-Windows 7 triple boot machine.Since the drive is absurdly huge (1 TB) I wouldn't mind throwing ReactOS into the mixtoo.I just found out that master boot records are limited to 4 entries, meaning 4 primary partitions. I had Windows XP set up on my old drive as a boot partition, a program files partition and a media partition. Since I really didn't want to install XP from scratch, I cloned this setup on my new drive.
This leaves me one MBR partition entry for installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and ReactOS. I'd like to avoid having to install XP from scratch like the plague, partly because it's supposed to be a safety net in case things go wrong with my other OS's and because I've invested a lot of time getting it set up exactly the way I like it.Here are the options I've considered and why I don't like them:Install Windows 7 on my media partition. This would work, but I prefer to keep my media partition completely separate from any OS, so that I can reformat an OS partition without affecting my media partition at all.
Use wubi or something to install Ubuntu in the same partition as something else. Again, this is brittle.Move all my media to a logical drive on an extended partition. Create another logical drive on this extended partition for Ubuntu. The problem here is that extended partitions are rather brittle--if you nuke one, it renders the rest useless.Just put the old drive back in my computer and run XP off it. Use the new one for the other OS's. The problem here is that the old drive is slower and uses extra power, generates extra heat, etc.
compaq presario sr2150nx <-- my computer.[URL]NO operating system but vista home appears to work with this computer. Does someone have a ISO/image of the Playstation 2 linux cd ?
I can't seem to find it anywhere.
I downloaded the appropriate iso for the ps3 from here:[url]
(specifically: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-powerpc+ps3.iso via torrent)
Installation runs smoothly up until 100% and then i am prompted to reboot.
When i click reboot, i get info on some daemons(?) shutting down(i think) and then the cd is automatically ejected and i am prompted to press enter.
So far, so good. After i hit enter though, i get a large amount of various read errors and finally a segmentation fault. The system just hangs there :/.
I forcibly reboot the PS3, and then i am greeted with the pack of errors that are shown in the screenshot.
I'm planning on setting up a home file server. I was wondering what platform would be recommended for something like this. The server would be used mainly for media storage which would be shared between an HTPC and a couple desktops and laptops. I was thinking of just getting whatever motherboard had the most SATA headers on it (which currently seems to be something P55-based) and setting up a RAID5 fakeraid with some 1.5 or 2TB drives and the OS in RAID1 with whatever drives I have laying around. It there anything flawed with this approach? P55 boards with 10 SATA headers are currently upwards of $200, which is kind of pricey. Is there a more economical route that I should consider? Also, are there any known problems with setting up a fakeraid like this using certain motherboard's SATA controllers?

I have a LAN of about 70 computers that I would like to share media files between. I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. The thing that I am having a hard time with is allowing a couple of administrators (on Windows 7 machines) read/write access for all files/folders. I am completely new to Ubuntu and Samba so please make explanations thorough. Here is /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

I'd like to install an IRC server on my website (it's hosted on another server location).I can log into the server side of things but am not sure how much control I have of installing applications. I'd like an IRC that's easy to install and easy to set-up. I logged into the cPanel page of the site and found this "general server information":
Operating system: Linux
Kernel version: 2.6.9-78.0.22.EL
Machine type: i686
Apache version: 1.3.41 (Unix)

Unfortunately there's not an IRCd/server type of application available on the "Fantistico Deluxe" application installer feature.
So when I install 10.04 LTS server with all the defaults. ie root parted with lvm, I get a grub error. Apparently the install script at the end of the installation does not take into account that I might install ubuntu on a different drive.
Without LVM, I can get it to work. If I drop down to shell and mount the root drive, then run:
grub-install --root-directory=/ /dev/sdc And all is good. But I want LVM on my boot drive. Does anybody out there know of an easy way of doing this? This really should be a bug. But I'm too much a noob to know where to issue this.
Attempting to install 10.04 Server on an IBM Series X 232 server. Its an old server with dual p III's, 4 small drives and an adaptec controller with a RAID 5 array. The server is currently running CentOS 5.5.
The CD I am installing from is known good. I verified it after I wrote it and verified it again during the install process. The system boots from the CD, I accept the defaults, then it fails at "adding additional components".
This is a draft write up. There could possibly be some errors in paths.
EDIT:I made a test version of a live PXE CD.

excersise is a pxe install & utility server targeted to home users. This is particular interesting since many device sold now does not have an optical drive. We want to use a proxyDHcp since most people are using dhcp on a home router without pxe support. I do not include a sub structure 32bit/64bit, in this example all is 32bit.I have documented this since it was quite a struggle to put it together. Not a lot of correct information out there.I think a consilidated wiki page should be created. My own contribution is making it work and collecting the info. I have copied much of it from:

im totally rubbish at command line. I have a small business server for home use, thats where i work from. I have Windows Small Business Server but a lot of the time its crap and am trying Linux. I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a desktop and while im new to it im very impressed. I also have a MAC and i must say id rather have Ubuntu.
Now i want to use Linux Server but its all command line and i want the GUI. Iv tried to do this on Ubuntu Server 9.04 and no sucess at all , iv followed the instructions from other posts, (1) sudo apt-get update, (2) sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and nothing works. Is there a way to install the GUI or is there a Linux Server with the GUI pre-installed?
