Apr 14, 2010Palimpsest Disk Utility was working fine able to read the SMART status of my hard drives till I rebooted my machine. After rebooting Palimpsest Disk Utility reports SMART is not available. Any way to get it to start working again?

Jan 22, 2011I'm running Gnome 2.30.2 on a Gentoo amd64 system. A few weeks ago, one of my hard disks started to go bad, and suddenly some kind of GUI version of the S.M.A.R.T. disk analyser popped up (not malware, honest). It was really cool because it showed me S.M.A.R.T. analysis results of each of the disks in my RAID1 array, and it showed me that there were some bad sectors on one disk.
Anyway, since I fixed my array, I haven't been able to figure out how to get that GUI window back so I can play around with it. There doesn't seem to be anything related in my Administration or Preferences menu, and there doesn't seem to be a "gnome-smart" or "gnome-disk-monitor" program accessible from the command line. I can install "smartctl" myself and use that, but how do I open up the GUI interface?

Sep 5, 2011I loaded the live CD (Gnome) and I got a warning about my Hard Drive, saying it was in danger of failing.Further details were that there were 360 Reallocated Sectors, and I should back data up and replace Hard DriveI re-ran test under windows, and it advised only 154 Reallocated Sectors, and that this was within acceptable tolerances.Is there any way to tell which tool is accurate?

General :: Damaged Hard Disk Doesn't Pass SMART Test, And , Won't Boot With It Connected, Even From A Live CD?
Sep 19, 2010Its basically an old SATA Hard Drive with a Windows XP partition I was trying to sell.When my computer does the BIOS checks, it doesn't pass the SMART test (but I can boot it anyway), although I can't boot Linux in any way with this Hard Disk connected (I even tried Live CD distros, like Parted Magic).I can boot the XP partition from inside the disk, although I guess its pretty close to not being able to. Is there any way to "fix" this Hard Drive?

Ubuntu :: SMART Status Suddenly Unsupported?
Oct 21, 2010I recently received an automatic update to my 10.04 system which included some kernel stuff. I am using vanilla repositories, I haven't added, removed, or altered any of the default repositories. I downloaded and installed the updates using the graphical Update Manager found in System->Administration
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and my kernel is listed as 2.6.32-25-generic. I haven't installed any new hardware whatsoever; my hard disk drive is the same as it has always been. When I go through System->Administration->Disk Utility, then view my hard drive, the line: SMART Status: reads with a grey circle and then "Not Supported" I am able to run the Benchmark application from Disk Utility and it completes without problem. This happened to me where I was unable to view SMART data after automatic updates involving the kernel when I was using Ubuntu 9.10.

Jun 21, 2011I'm currently running ubuntu 10.10 64bit. My problem started occurring a couple days ago. When I check my disk space using either disk usage analyzer or Gparted it says I have about 69 gigs left. But say I am in a folder on the bottom of the window it will tell me I only have 48 gigs. And just to test I tried going over the amount specified in the folder window and it tells me I have insufficient space.

Jun 22, 2011I have a server that, due to the amount of data it's moving, tends to trash up the hard drive when I have a power outage or crash. It doesn't have a keyboard or monitor attached to it normally so it's a real pain when I have to boot it back up. I have to hook one up just to hit F to have it fix all the errors. Is there a way to have it do this automatically on boot rather then having to confirm it?

Aug 2, 2009On my FC11 installation Palimpset Disk Utility icon in the top menu bar is reporting that I have a disk failure with the caption "one or more disks is failing".When I open up the details section in Pilimpset I can see that "2 sectors are failing",I have checked this with gparted checking facility and it reports that the disk is OK.What I would like to do is to check the disk using a command like tool or ofline tool, which would then tell me where those bad sectors are on that partition so that I can resize it (using gparted) and have the bad sectors in NON ALLOCATED DISK SPACE.

I am running Ubuntu 10.4 64bit on an AMD64 2.2gh.
I have been doing my research about distros and know a bit about what is going on with Linux. Sort of transcending past newbie I think. But I want to know what is the most stable distro for the least amount of Disk errors, or how to get ubuntu not to have so many errors. Maybe install the 32bit version? I want something fast and simple where I can run gimp/inkscape/openoffice/and maybe some of the video editing packages like Kino/piviti/cinerella.

I have recently setup a small file backup server (2 500GB drives) running Centos 5.2, with a rsync daemon (via xinetd). However I have noticed that after about a week of usage, if I reboot, then the disk that rsync uses, has a lot of multiply claimed blocks and inode errors, such that I have to run fsck multiple times to fix. Dec 16, 2010I had a set of rather unusual problems on installing a new 500Gb hard drive on my F14 system, I've solved them, but they were that unusual that I thought I should share them in case anyone else gets the same thing! I'd been experiencing intermittent faults on one of my drives, (lock ups for no reason, occasional boot ups that failed due to ' disk unreadable errors' and other odd errors). I assumed that the drive was failing, but it always showed 'Heathy' on disk utility! This was the disk with the OS on, plus my main 'data' disk had some bad sectors, so I thought I'd buy a nice big 500Gb and reinstall the whole system.
I backed up all my data to an external 'USB' drive, opened the case, (a big old under the table 'desktop', why do they still call them 'desktops'?) shoved in the new SATA drive and rebooted, intending to format the new drive to EXT4 and partitioning it before installing F14 again! OOOOOOOOOW! Major drive failure, missing OS, whole list of SDB errors! Control D, to reboot, BIOS only sees one drive; SDA (I have three, two IDE and one SATA) plus the one I just put in makes four. I go into BIOS and discover that it not only cant see any of the other drives, but my two DVD drives are missing too!
Now I've been building my own systems and mucking about with computers since before you could buy them, and Ive never seen a problem like this one! At first I thought the new drive had screwed my system, for on removal, the problem persisted! Then I noticed that the IDE connector in drive SDB, (the long 40 pin job) was just slightly out of line with the back of the drive, pushed it firmly in and what do you know, everything works! We moved recently and I think the vibration was enough to loosen the connector to give intermittent faults, and pulling the cables about to get the new drive in, pulled it out further......
OpenSUSE Install :: When Verifying A Disk After Burning Suse On It It Keeps Giving Errors
Nov 20, 2009I've been trying to burn Suse 11.2 to a DVD now for a couple of days but I keep running into trouble. When verifying a disk after burning Suse on it it keeps giving me errors. I've tried Nero and ImgBurn, different burners, different ISOs, different burning speeds (downloaded via torrent and http) but it keeps giving me the verification error.
The only thing I haven't tried is a different brand of DVDs but until now I've never had any problems with this brand.

Apr 9, 2010This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...
In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.
When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.
First laptop, first try:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
"use entire disk" works perfectly.
Second laptop, first try:
Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.
Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.
Ubuntu Servers :: HW RAID Disk Shows Up In Fstab But Not In /dev/disk/by-uuid?
Jun 28, 2010I have an SiI hardware SATA RAID card, with two 500GB disks in mirrored RAID configuration. When I first plugged them in and set it up, things seemed to work ok, but on boot the raid controller told me that the RAID needed rebuilding, and it would happen automatically after POST. So I didn't worry about it, and the drive mounted fine, and it's been that way for years. I just went in and manually on-line rebuilt the RAID in the controller's BIOS, and now when I boot into Ubuntu, both disks show up in fdisk, but neither show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid. Am I missing something?

Aug 1, 2010I had done a new lucid install to a 1 TB RAID 1 array using the alternate CD a few weeks back. I messed up that system trying to some hardware working that lucid doesn't have drivers for yet, so I gave up on it and reinstalled to a single 80 GB disk that I now want to move over to the RAID array.
I moved all of the existing files on the array to a single folder, then copied all of the folders from the 80 GB disk over to the array with permissions and symlinks (minus the contents of /proc and /sys, which I created empty).
These are the commands I used:

I tried to change fstab to use the 689a... for root, but when I try to boot, it's still trying to open /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d...
So then I booted from the single disk again and chrooted into the array, then ran update-initramfs -u. I got 3 "grep: /proc/modules: No such file or directory" errors, and "cat: /proc/cmdline: No such file or directory"- so I created directory /proc/modules, created an empty file /proc/cmdline, and ran the initramfs update again. Then I tried to shut down, which hung (probably because I was doing all of this from a terminal window in Gnome), so I killed the power after a couple of minutes.
It's still trying to use /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d... to boot.
What am I missing? I assume I just have to change the UUID to mount as root, but I don't know how.

I try 'rm' various log files but the space I free up lasts less than a minute before the disk reports as being full once more.

Ubuntu Installation :: Use Ram Instead Of Disk - Write To Disk At Shutdown
Mar 21, 2011I have a netbook I'm not using and which I transformed into a server with Apache, Tomcat6, Netatalk, Webmin, BIND9 and Tor.
Problem is, the disks never stop spinning because all of the programs write a few kb at least every few seconds to disk, even when nobody is connected to it.
My question is: Is there a way to have the computer boot from disk like normal (maybe even a squashfs), keep ALL CHANGES to ram and then save to disk when either the ram is full (unlikely because the server is rebooted every few days) or at shutdown?
I thought about a mixture of ramfs and unionfs but I'm not good enough yet...

The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).

Feb 17, 2016I received the following error when I got home from work today. If this was a windows environment, my first inclination would be to boot off my dvd and then run a chkdsk on the drive to flag any bad sectors that might exist. But there's a complication for me.

I did a bit of reading and it seems that most people suggest using badblocks to first get a list of badblocks from the drive and save it to a file. Then use e2fsck to then mark the blocks listed in the badblocks file as bad on the hard drive. My problem here is that this drive is part of a RAID5 array that hosts my OS. I wanted to confirm if this was still the correct process.I boot to my Live Debian disk, stop the raid array if it's active. Then run badblocks + e2fsck commands on the drive in question and then reboot.
