I have a need to support multiple remote desktop sessions. Each one seperate from the other and run concurrently.
Windows XP supports one. Widows server support two. How many will Ubuntu server suuport? How about Ubuntu desktop?
I have a mate who runs the IT in his office. He has recently set up and secured the network but now has an issue logging in to the network from home. Here is the message I got from him regarding the set up and what he is having specific issues with.
I was really pleased with the results on my Pen Test; the office itself is a pure MS environment but the testers all use Ubuntu 9.10 to hack with. The main tools of choice are Nessus and Ophcrack with a bit of NMap. It's pretty scary what you can do with just these tools. I had a Wireshark trace running all the time and it's fascinating to watch how these guys crack open a system. The only really major change I've had to implement on my network is to force the use of SSL as a transport layer for our remote desktop sessions. This has forced me to start using MS RDP Client 5.2 because it can use certificates on the session. The problem I've got now is that the Terminal Client in Ubuntu can't do this so I can't remote in from home on my Ubuntu laptop.
I currently have a RHEL 5.4 software development server. A lot of my developers are using windows desktops and they need to run interactive sessions on the server. I need to support between 4-6 concurrent users on the server. I tried doing this with VNC but I was never able to set that up for more than one user at a time.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Debian VPS running Lenny and I'm trying to setup a way to run remote desktop sessions from it. I went with FreeNX, NX client for windows from nomachine, XDM and xfce4. All seems to have installed well, but I can't start an NX session on my box. I can connect to the server and authenticate, but the client hangs on "Downloading the session information," eventually timing out. The log output is below - I'm not even seeing an error message. Any ideas?

The only thing I noticed during install, which was about 400 packages since this was a barebones VPS, was that I should consider recompiling the kernel with CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND=y. I don't know if this has any impact on session information, however, since this is a new session, not one I'm trying to resume.
i have installed ubuntu 9.04 and desktop xubuntu. i want access the sever from my windows xp using either rdp or vnc. i am able to use the ssh but thats only command line. i need the gui desktop. i have installed x11vnc,tightvnc etc. but whenever i try to connect from my vnc manager,its giveout error.machine actively refused it. i havent configured any port or anything like that.

I am asking this out of curiosity, is there any way to take remote sessions using http. Like in web conferencing, we invite users to join the conference and then we are able to share desktop. This will enable me to have remote access via SSH command line.So far, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server + Ubuntu Desktop to a virtual machine. I can access this via SSH and locally via the desktop. However, in the real environment the only access I am going to have initially is via SSH.
I would like to be able to connect using Windows Remote Desktop or VNC (whichever is easier and most importantly - most secure) to the machine.. even though the desktop is on there, I need to somehow configure the remote access all from the command line.I've had a read of various forums and have been trawling support forums for days but can't find a working solution for 9.10 Server or that fits my situation above where I will not have any physical access to the desktop or machine to configure remote desktop. It all has to be done via SSH/command line.
I am a novice in the world of cloud and recently managed to configure Ubuntu 9.04 Cloud (using kvm, eucalyptus and other packages) successfully at my college for my project work. The problem is that i can only manage to view the running instance using rdesktop from any remote machine. Is there any way to do this other than rdesktop/logs? Secondly, I want to develop a application on the lines of google docs as a part of my project. Is it possible to install apache server on this virtual instance, and host a website? How will the client access this website? Which frameworks would be required or do I have to develop one?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it
I want to be able to run multiple desktop sessions, but when I goto the next session terminal and type startx -- :2 the screen just goes all black.

It is has 4gb of ram and had been working great the first week or so but something strange started happening about the same time I installed MythTV. After that, the server would slow down considerably and the ram being used would go from about 400megs up to all of the 4gb and use about 2gb or swap. View 3 Replies View RelatedI maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?
I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

I know some cards have trouble with their drivers or performance in Ubuntu so I was wondering if there's a way of finding the best brand and model to get so I know I won't have any problems with it on my Ubuntu installation. A webpage, a place where people post their cards and how good they perform or something like that which can help me get the easiest one to work with. The card would be installed via PCI and the room with the router is pretty much in front of this one.

However, what the solutions I found until now offer me, is the possibility to create a new desktop session and view that one (or run an application an view that one). I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.

I have set up a server running ubuntu desktop, and I'm able to logon through remote desktop (win 7). The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. Is there some setting I have missed to be able to see the same from any computer (logon through remote desktop).

Install went fine, until first boot.Then the monitor showed the "not supported display mode".No GUI installed.Machine is up, as I can ssh into it just fine.. Not that I really need a console anyway..I know this has to do with Grub's display mode.. but it's apparently not detecting correctly.

When I try to enable Desktop Effects, I'm told that "Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware / configuration." Clicking no, something starts using up 90-100% CPU, I can't tell what the rogue process is, top only shows the gconf daemon using 10-11% CPU. I have to log off to end it. What's up with the card not being supported? I can't find a list, but I'm sure this is new enough to be included. Is there a way other than top to trace the rogue application? I've never seen anything like this before, top has always been reliable. I have Gnome 2.30 on openSUSE 11.3.

I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?

After coming home one evening I found my server was turned off. My suspicions lead me to believe we had a storm and the power went off, then the UPS went off and finally at that point the server went off too. I think my server was set to allow security updates. After it turned of and restarted it seems it made a change to Grub and upgraded it to Grub2. In doing so I now get the following message:

I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.
