General :: Any Way To Take Remote Sessions Using Http

Mar 1, 2011

Usually we require vnc to take remote sessions. There was one another i think it was called xdrp or xrdp. I am asking this out of curiosity, is there any way to take remote sessions using http. Like in web conferencing, we invite users to join the conference and then we are able to share desktop. Is there any way to do this on one-to-one basis ? is such a technology exists for linux (for any disto) ?

Server :: Logrotate For HTTPD Breaks HTTP Sessions

Dec 22, 2010

We started hosting some very large content on our site, and the usage patterns in cacti have revealed that the HTTP sessions through our load-balancers drop off dramatically right at midnight.

The logrotate process runs right at midnight, and issues a reload command through the service tool (CentOS 5.5):
Code:
$ cat /etc/logrotate.d/httpd
/data/websites/logs/*_log /var/log/httpd/*log {
missingok
daily
dateext
compress
rotate 7
sharedscripts
postrotate
/sbin/service httpd reload > /dev/null 2>/dev/null || true
endscript
}

Looking at the init script reveals that the reload section is suppose to trigger a HUP of the httpd process:
Code:
reload() {
echo -n $"Reloading $prog: "
if ! LANG=$HTTPD_LANG $httpd $OPTIONS -t >&/dev/null; then
RETVAL=$?
echo $"not reloading due to configuration syntax error"
failure $"not reloading $httpd due to configuration syntax error"
else
killproc -p ${pidfile} $httpd -HUP
RETVAL=$?
fi
echo
}

In which, Apache should reload it's configuration and start the new logfile without breaking current sessions. However that clearly isn't what is going on. I'm tempted to edit the logrotate script to trigger a HUP directly by cat'ing the PID file directly. Is this normal behavior for Apache when signaled with a HUP?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Sessions - MS RDP Client 5.2

Aug 12, 2010

I have a mate who runs the IT in his office. He has recently set up and secured the network but now has an issue logging in to the network from home. Here is the message I got from him regarding the set up and what he is having specific issues with.

I was really pleased with the results on my Pen Test; the office itself is a pure MS environment but the testers all use Ubuntu 9.10 to hack with. The main tools of choice are Nessus and Ophcrack with a bit of NMap. It's pretty scary what you can do with just these tools. I had a Wireshark trace running all the time and it's fascinating to watch how these guys crack open a system. The only really major change I've had to implement on my network is to force the use of SSL as a transport layer for our remote desktop sessions. This has forced me to start using MS RDP Client 5.2 because it can use certificates on the session. The problem I've got now is that the Terminal Client in Ubuntu can't do this so I can't remote in from home on my Ubuntu laptop.

Debian Configuration :: Run Remote Desktop Sessions - FreeNX Connection Timeout

Apr 19, 2010

I have a Debian VPS running Lenny and I'm trying to setup a way to run remote desktop sessions from it. I went with FreeNX, NX client for windows from nomachine, XDM and xfce4. All seems to have installed well, but I can't start an NX session on my box. I can connect to the server and authenticate, but the client hangs on "Downloading the session information," eventually timing out. The log output is below - I'm not even seeing an error message. Any ideas?

[Code]...

The only thing I noticed during install, which was about 400 packages since this was a barebones VPS, was that I should consider recompiling the kernel with CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND=y. I don't know if this has any impact on session information, however, since this is a new session, not one I'm trying to resume.

Ubuntu Networking :: Redirect All Http/https/ftp Traffic Through The Remote Proxy?

Apr 6, 2011

I need to redirect all http/https/ftp traffic through the remote proxy, but when I changes connection settings in browser or in System->Preferences->Network Proxy it doesn't work well: instead of getting page content browser asks for saving some short (8 bytes) file with the same content for all requested pages. It happens in Chrome/Opera/Firefox. This proxy requires authorization and works on computer with Windos XP. It worked well when I was using Windows 7 and Proxifier, now I have Ubuntu 9.10 with all available updates.

Networking :: Craft A Valid Http/1.1 Request For Getting Http Headers (not The Html File Itself)

Sep 27, 2010

Using netcat, nc(1), craft a valid http/1.1 request for getting http headers (not the html file itself!) for the main index page of www dot aalto dot fi. What request method did you use? Which headers did you need to send to the server? What was the status code for the request? Which headers did the server return? Explain the purpose of each header.

nc -v www dot aalto dot fi 8080
HEAD / HTML/1.1
host: www dot aalto dot fi
And it returns:
200 OK
Content-Length: 858
Content-Type: text/html

I really don't know what does it mean. Question 2: Using netcat, nc(1), start a bogus web server listening on the loopback interface port 8080. Verify with netstat(, that the server really is listening where it should be. Direct your browser to the bogus server and capture the User-Agent: header "Direct your browser to the bogus server and capture the User-Agent: header" I don't understand this question.

I have some heavy, long processes running on remote Linux machines. I use my laptop to SSH to these machine and run the processes from my couch.

BUT, when I want to shutdown my laptop, I am in trouble since the remote processes are killed.

I did my research and found out that "screen" is a great solution for me, it is! (As long as I don't SHUTDOWN my laptop). Isn't there a way to "persist" the "screen" sessions so I can shut it down and then re-attach to a session?

General :: PuTTY / Debian: Switching Between Sessions?

Feb 18, 2011

I am no longer working on the Linux-machine directly, but I'm using Windows puTTY to get a terminal-session. Within that puTTY window I want to switch (or maybe create first) several sessions between which I can switch arbitrarily. I have read about using Ctrl-Alt-Fn, which doesn't work, most likely due to the puTTY interface. I have tried chvt n, which doesn't do anything either (or that it seems). I have tried "bash &" and got bash in the background, which I could call forth using fg, but then had to stay with that and couldn't switch anywhere. Only option was "exit". So, what's the correct way to get several sessions in that puTTY window and switch between them?

If I ssh to a remote machine and then lose internet connectivity, the session freezes. I can't control-c or otherwise abort and go back to my local xterm or terminal prompt but if I wait several minutes it will do so.
There must be some way to force it to abort the remote ssh session when connectivity is lost. I'm on a Mac but I believe this happens on cygwin or linux as well.

How do I create several detached screen sessions on startup? screen -A -m -d -S test ./script.sh seems like it should work but using it in a script started by cron doesn't show any screen sessions running after booting.

It looks like the screen session is closed after the command finishes executing, can I keep it open so I can see the output?

General :: Debian - Server Does Not Appear To Be Handling Sessions Properly?

Jul 21, 2011

after installing Debian 6 on a server. When I try to install a software called ActiveCampaign, I get the following error ... "Your server does not appear to be handling sessions properly."I have install Apache, PHP, MySql and Perl already. Also, after the server restarts, I Webmin will not automatically start, even thou it is setup in the Webmin configuration to start with the server. I have to use /etc/init.d/webmin start from a command line after I su.

My last question is about ftp permissions. I have install proftpd and it seems to be working fine, but when I try to edit any file or upload, I can not. In order to upload and manipulate files, I am using WinSCP under root, wich is a big NO NO.Sorry for the three questions, but I figured I would ask all in one post, instead of creating multiple, since I already have your attention.

General :: Understanding Idle/Inactive Sessions And Whether Or Not Someone Is Logged In?

I'm trying to understand if anyone is left on a server. Basically I manage a simple linux server remotely used by 3-4 individuals. I can never tell if someone is actually on or not using w/who.What I'm seeing is some people having what appears to be inactive/lost VNC sessions. I don't understand idle fully, but I do believe a program (without user interaction) can clear idle back to 0, correct?Anyway, I'm asking because every now and then I need to reboot the server, and I do not want to interrupt any program working on calculations or waiting on having the data saved.

General :: Xvnc Sessions Do Not Allow Program Or Terminal Launching?

Feb 12, 2010

I just added 8 additional vncserver sessions(Xvnc) (using a well-documented procedure my predecessor used) to my RH Enterprise 2.4.21-4 (OK it went by fast) server. This brings the number of session listed in my /etc/sysconfig/vncservers file to ~32. Applications and terminals now seem to choose if they will open or not in the Xvnc session and not all sessions start at boot. I can start them manually, and they will work, but then they stop working properly. You can open a session, view the active desktop, click on menus and associated drop-down items to try and open apps, but the apps/terminals just won't open. Is there a limit to the number Xvnc Sessions that can be managed? If so, what is it? This happens whether I try to connect from a Winddows box or another Linux box.

General :: Link Terminal Sessions - Show Logged In As The Same User?

Jun 7, 2011

I was doing some rather lengthy procedures using a terminal. Then I wrote script using Kate, and input it into that terminal, and then realized that I was logged in as a normal user in that terminal as opposed to a superuser, which is how I was logged in at the other terminal. I've never noticed this before because I've never done anything that takes this long.

Is there any way to link all terminal sessions in such a way that they all show me logged in as the same user? I don't even know if this is even important, but I don't want to risk losing any things that I had done.
