I am running Ubuntu 10.10 server edition with Samba file sharing on it.How do I push program installations or upgrades to windows or Linux machines when they connect? Is there a GUI interface for it? How do I differentiate between Linux and Windows and occasionally Macs? I looked around for a while on google but I didn't find anything.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10, my video card is ATI Radeon HD 3600
Heres my issue:
When I originally attempted to enable desktop effects, I was told that I was unable to do so. Not being one to rush to ask a question, I tried to figure out the issue, and it seemed to be that I needed to install the fglrx driver available for ATI cards- a simple enough fix. I installed the driver, and rebooted my machine, and everything seemed to be fine- the initial splash page came up- but immediately afterwards (presumably when I reached the login screen) My monitor went out of range.
Not being strong in coding, I was unable to figure out a way to remove the driver without a GUI (though I think I very well could have), so I had to uninstall and reinstall (no sweat, I hadn't really started anything yet). However, its obvious that the fglrx driver is what blew it out of range.
My question is, is there anything I can do to get this driver to work on my machine? I found similar questions but they all seemed either to be slightly different from my issue or recommended changing the .xorg file, which does not exist in 9.10.
I just did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and now I can't boot into Windows 7 on this dual boot desktop. I usually do a clean install but with a laptop and desktop a copy of Windows 7 and Ubuntu on each machine it's getting very tiring with 4 os's so opted for the upgrade this time.
During the installation there was a window that game up about upgrading grub and what devices to install it on. The help box was not very complete and seemed to say to click all the check boxes which included the main drive and it's partitions including windows. During the install somewhere it said something like grub could not be installed on one of the devices which I think was sda6 which is probably the Windows 7 partition.
So how would I get the option of booting into Windows 7 on startup as now I only get a blank black screen when I click on the Windows 7 option upon bootup? I hope I don't have to reinstall one or both os's again from scratch as this is becoming to much work to do on two systems every 6 months, especially with the amount of programs I have installed.
I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.
These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.
1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?
2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

No problem as I am not using anything unorthodox outside the LAMP stack with a few PHP add-ons to support graphics.I use SAMBA so I can edit web sites easily with Windows tools.So now given a Windows Server, who should be king server and have everybody on the same page so to speak.

some time ago I've installed Ubuntu LTS 10.4.1 on my linux server because I tought that the long-term-support version was the server version... then, I realized that there was also an Ubuntu Server edition... so, is it possible to upgrade my current installation to 10.10 Server edition? what should I do?
View 9 Replies View RelatedVersion 9.10 had been installed via the alternate CD as the LTSP Server Edition. In place upgrade to 10.4 completed normally via Update Manager. However, LTSP terminal boot now fails with error "Forbidden directory" and "Access Violation". The following was found . Ubuntu 10.4 uses tftp-hpa. Either this is a change from Ubuntu 9.10 or the default behaviour of tftp-hpa has changed. So now, the filename argument given in /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf must include the full pathname. The previous requirement was to exclude the chroot path. If this is documented somewhere, I missed it. And after modifying /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf, do not forget to restart the dhcp daemon $ sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart

I attempted to upgrade my headless Ubuntu server from 8.4 LTS to 10.4 LTS last night. I used screen so that I could reconnect because the update said that although SSH may crash, I should be able to get back on via port 9004. When I tried to get back on this morning I could not SSH in via port 22 or 9004, so I did the only thing that I felt that I had left--I rebooted. I have since had to dig out an old monitor and keyboard and put a head on it to try and get this problem resolved.
When I boot the computer, GRUB gives me the option of kernel 2.6.32-21-generic-pae, but when I pick that I get the following error and the Caps and Scroll lights on the keyboard just blink.
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)I next have the option of kernel 2.6.32-21-generic-pae (recovery mode), but when I choose that option I get a screen full of time dated lines that do not make any sens to me and that same previous error message somewhere in the middle of it all.
If I try to boot to any of the old kernels, then I get a screen full of error messages and get dropped to an ash shell, BusyBox v1.13.3
Obviously the computer was in the middle of asking me something very important when I rebooted, but without being able to log in, I was never going to find out what that was. I guess I assumed that it wasn't a big deal because all of this was probably sorted out already as a possible chain of events on a headless server upgrade.
The bottom line is that my server no longer works and I do not have a clue as to how to get it up and going. If you have ever experienced this situation and have gotten through it or you actually do know something about this situation, please help me out.
My server is no longer headless, but I am now definitely clueless.
I have a Ubuntu Server machine that I can't get to 10.04. Sometime in the past I updated it to 9.04, but perhaps something went wrong. When I do a do-release-upgrade, it tells me there are no upgrades available. I tried a bunch of things but no luck, so I installed gnome to try the gui update manager on the console. When I start it, it first tells me that my distribution is no longer supported and that I should update. It gives me the button that says 9.04 is available, but after I click it I'm told that there are no new versions available.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAbout 3 months ago I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 and the experience has since been very problematic in regards to overall performance. The problem is mostly with MySQL, but I have also noticed that the smallest amount of disk IO slows down the system a lot. I was expecting a slight performance improvement before I upgraded, but instead I got a very big opposite. I tried tweaking the MySQL server settings, but the improvement has been minimal.
At this point I am going to have to make a new system with something like Centos (I've heard good things about it's performance). Before I do, I want to give Ubuntu one last chance and ask if anyone knows anything that can be done to fix the performance issues. At the very least go back to something that is comparable to 8.04?
I've two servers working quite happily, but I'm aware that support for Jaunty/Jackalope is ending. One servers is a Samba PDC the other is a mail server.I obviously don't want to break either of them. What is the recommended procedure for upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04 LTS can I do it directly and if it fails can I just use my backup over the top of the upgrade to effectively downgrade?

I tryed to update ubuntu server from 9.04 to 9.10 a few days ago, but do-release-upgrade failed with the following output.

I upgrade one of my servers from 8.04 to 9.04 and now libvirt is not working anymore.
The funny part is that the virtual machines are working perfectly because I can access them via ssh/ftp/etc.
I just can't access the libvirt interface. For example, if I issued (as root):
virsh -c qemu://system
I halts with Connecting to uri: qemu:///system error: failed to connect to the hypervisor
Is there a trace/debug that I can verify ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter digging around trying to figure out how to upgrade my local apt-mirror to 10.04, I figured I would share it here so anyone else who does this, can do it with ease. It requires a few steps, and editing a couple files, but the process is relatively painless.This assumes you have an apt-mirror already running on your server. Also it assumes you're using /var/www/ubuntu as your root where all your packages are stored.
The first step is to visit http://changelogs.ubuntu.com and download the meta-release packages. Create a new directory, /var/www/ubuntu/upgrade, and drop the files there.On the client's end, a single file needs to be edited, /etc/update-manager/meta-release. Change the URI's in that file to the URI of your apt-mirror and run your update manager. Your upgrade will start, only asking if you want to change your paths in your sources.list. Agree to it, and the packages will download and configure.
I have a server that started out at 8.04 LTS was upgraded to 8.10 and to 9.04. When I upgraded to 9.04 sudo and ssh stopped working.
Fortunately I have a root account and can login as root or su to root.
I suspect this is the result of changes I made to nsswitch.conf and pam.conf to get winbind working.
I was hoping for a fix by upgrading to 9.10, but that didn't work. I want to upgrade to 10.04 LTS, and stay there but I think need to resolve this first.
auth.log reports failed password for ssh attempts and authentication failed for sudo. I am at a loss to determine where the problem is and how to track it down.
I had a working server 9.04 on my network and I could access shares via Samba and MacFusion from Windows, ubutu and mac boxes. After the upgrade I can not access shares via Samba, I can ssh in it just fine (no change there) also Macfusion mounts the paths just fine.
Anybody had this problem with the upgrade? It must be samba everything else is working (also I can't access any files from my Ubuntu Laptop running 10.10 Desktop edition)

I did a upgrade to 10.04 on my server. Then after a reboot I was unable to remotely get into server. Upon connecting the monitor I am greeted with the purple 10.04 boot screen with this text at the bottom:

Now I did some googling and the results I came across involved a encrypted drive which I have never even tried to setup. Now if I choose a manual recovery I am dropped to cli which from there I can start networking then ssh into the system and run updates, ping other machines, etc. But again this is meant to be a remote access server so everytime I reboot I cant just hit the M key let alone run service networking start! So I commented out the swap entry's in both my /etc/crypttab and /etc/fstab...now I cannot even get to terminal as I could before...now it just loops with no errors!
I had sybase server running on my desktop but after the upgrade it does not seam to start properly. tried to restart the server many times but does not seam to help

I have a PCI compliance notice sitting here telling me to upgrade to Apache 2.2.17. Thing is, Ubuntu is quite happy sitting on 2.2.16 (Ubuntu).
I understand that the Ubuntu folks' reasoning in rolling security updates back to 2.2.16, but I need to get an automated scan to shut up.

It's a 9.10 server that got upgraded to 10.04 then to 10.10 and now the plan was to make it into a 11.04 machine. So I do the usual precautions and then punch do-release-upgrade in a screened shell. I have a home file server that I am trying to upgrade to natty 11.04. It was running 10.04 and was behind on updates due to lack of an internet connection for several months. I didn't have any problems applying all updates (sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude full-upgrade) and then upgrading to 10.10 (sudo do-release-upgrade). I applied all updates to 10.10 (sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude full-upgrade) without any problems.
However I encountered problems trying to upgrade to 11.04.

Hangs indefinitely. I don't receive error messages, it just sits there. I have to escape from Screen and 'sudo screen -wipe' to try anything else.
I tried changing my repository list to point to a different mirror, but no change.
If I had error messages I would have more to go on, but at the moment I'm stuck.
Last night i updated to 9.10, all good except i can no longer access my samba shares!!
