Ubuntu Servers :: Mixed Linux And Windows Servers?

Oct 30, 2010

Now that I have more computers I am looking at new solutions to manage the proliferation. My Linux machine has been replaced and its now much more powerful than before but its still a 32-bit processor. No problem as I am not using anything unorthodox outside the LAMP stack with a few PHP add-ons to support graphics.I use SAMBA so I can edit web sites easily with Windows tools. So now given a Windows Server, who should be king server and have everybody on the same page so to speak.

Ubuntu Servers :: Windows DHCP Server - Multiple Boot Servers ?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.

These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

From: [url]

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.

1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?

2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

Networking :: Getting Two Linux Servers To Communicate

Dec 18, 2010

I am testing with Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 in a VMWare environment. I've installed two SLES10 servers, named sles1 and sles2. I can't get the two servers to communicate, even a simple ping won't work. The "Network Adapter" in VMWare is set to "bridged", a setting which has worked fine when installing WinXP in VMWare and connecting to the Internet.Even if I ping sles1 from sles1 (= "pinging myself"), I get the same error message.Only if I ping localhost, I get a proper ping result. What did I do wrong? Did I forget to configure something?

Ubuntu Servers :: Reboot The System With A Linux CD To Do The Backup?

Mar 1, 2010

I have a personal ubuntu server that provides apache, glassfish, firewall, routing, email, CVS, MySQL, etc.... This server has been running for a while with two hard drives configured into a RAID 1 array. The array has two partitions, one for swap and one for the data. I currently back up the data with a removable hard drive. I use dd and create an image of one drive and the MBRs (partition tables) of each drive. In a disaster situation I can use this data to recreate one drive and then re mirror it to the second, or just boot the back up.I like this solution because I can easily recover from bare metal, and the backup is transparent. I can browser it if needed since its an uncompressed image of the drive. The one drawback is that I need to reboot the system with a linux CD to do the backup.

My hard drive space is almost at capacity. So what I want to do is add a third drive to the array and migrate it to RAID 5. However this will cause my current backup method to no longer work. How can I back up this RAID 5 array. I need to back up the entire system, and not just the data. I have made many tweaks to the system over the years that it has been running that I can't lose if a restore is needed. I have seen a large thread here that people have been using tar. My concern with tar is how do you use a tar archive to restore a system to a new array. Im assuming that you would need to setup the array and then just restore the archive? Also, i don't have much faith in using tar on a running system. Doesn't this open yourself up to corrupted backups? My second idea is using rsync. While I consider myself experienced in linux from 10 years of personal and professions use, I have not had much experience with this utility. Would rsync provide a more reliable way to backup a running system that would enable a bare metal restore later? I once read something about people using rsync with hard links to create a backup that could store many incremental backups. My main concern with both rsync and tar is not being able to restore the OS to the state that it was in at the time of the backup.

Ubuntu Servers :: Linux Freezes When Running A JVM Performance Test?

Jun 6, 2010

I am in the process of running a set of performance tests for the latest Sun JVM 1.6.0_20. I am using for that the dacapo test suite: [URL]

I ran the test suite very often with all sorts of settings, but recently it happened once that my Ubuntu system froze. I could still ping the machine, but nothing else was responding any more, no screen output, no ssh login, not possible to switch consoles. After rebooting the system the system logs were quiet. No single trace of any problem.

I am using a custom compiled kernel 2.6.34: Linux i7 2.6.34-custom-201005231602 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun May 23 16:06:01 CEST 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux and I am experimenting around with the -XX:+UseLargePages JVM switch the requires to set-up the hugetlbfs on the Linux system: [URL]

A similar issue happened in March 2010 on one of our CentOS 5.4 systems where we run a heavy load Java application on, where we had to hard power off the machine and after the reboot there was no trace of the problem in the logs. On that server we used JDK 1.6.0_17 and did not use hugetlbfs.

My first question would be what to do so that next time something like that happens I have more information available after the incident to debug and analyse the problem?

Ubuntu Servers :: Ubuntu Server Vs. Oracle Enterprise Linux?

Oct 15, 2010

Having been a long-time Linux supporter, it was a no-brainer for me to push Linux as the OS when it was time to move my company's website(s) from an external host to an internal server. My company ponied up the bucks for an HP Proliant DL180 G5 server (this was about a year ago) upon which I installed Slackware 12.1 (I kinda default to Slackware, although in the past I've also used RedHat on the server and openSUSE on the desktop).

Well, it's now time to upgrade the OS on the server. Perhaps I'm a little late to the game on this, but I just recently found out about Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5. Bad Oracle ju-ju aside, it looked to be a very good and stable server distro, especially when you consider the availability of Oracle support for it. So I've since installed OEL to a non-production server and have been testing it out.It looks to be a good match for my needs.

However, since installing OEL on my test server I've installed Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 on my home desktop (a 1.86ghz Intel Core 2 Duo HP xw4400 workstation) and in a VirtualBox VM on my work desktop (a 3.2ghz Intel Core i3 iMac) and... holy crap, it's the best desktop Linux I've ever had the pleasure of using. It will certainly replace Slackware as my default "go-to" Linux distro. Which has made me wonder about the Ubuntu Server offering and if it might not be a better fit for my webserver in the same way that Ubuntu Desktop is a better fit for my workstation.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to pull down another server distro, install it, and test it unless I'm reasonably certain that it's going to give OEL a run for its money. So I turn to the forums and the knowledge of the users who frequent them: is Ubuntu Server a strong enough contender to OEL that I should take a more serious look at it? Or, like I'm hearing about the latest Ubuntu Netbook edition, would it not be worth my time if I'm happy with OEL so far?

Ubuntu Servers :: Game Servers Via Wine Tickless Required?

Mar 4, 2010

(Mods: If you feel this belongs more in the Games or Wine discussion area, please feel free to move. This question does intersect many areas, so was unsure where to put)

I have a funky server Ubuntu 9.10 Enterprise setup where I have X on all the time (using Xfce4 - not Xbuntu) with latest wine so I can run Windows only based game server executables. One of the applications is a simple dedicated racing game server made by the company I work for that works perfect in wine (unfortunately, the full 3D game client does not, so its a windows only game). The other is more just to test, runs Serious Sam HD dedicated with wine with a steam client active in background since SSHD Ded requires a steam client logged in (just create a dummy account).

Im getting some lag issues with the SSHD on the end-users client side. Unsure if its related to it being a more complex game and using wine to translate slowing it down. Things like tiny warps once in awhile, and the ping of clients kinda jumping around.

Im pretty sure my network settings are ok. Maybe not fully optimized for every bit via ipv4. Still though. This 1U Opteron server is in a ISP with a full 1000 up and down. Ports are locked out that aren't being used. I do have apache going, but its nothing strenuous. The CPU isnt used overly so. Maybe peaks out around 60% under strain, but mostly 20-40%. Memory use is about 550-700megs for SSHD itself. Given, it only has 2 gigs total at this time, but I still usually have near a Gig of memory available at most times.

I admit newbness of linux servers in general. Was reading about other game servers like CS:S requiring a ticked kernel near 1000 to get the least amount of lag. Some even saying they dropped the tickless options of the newer 2.6 kernels on purpose because they produced lag. Was checking on the history of newer Windows Server like 2008 and they still use a ticked OS, though a more optimized version.

So this boils down to should I be running a Ticked OS kernel to run a more complex Windows based dedicated server? I haven't tried thus far, well because I am again a bit of a n00b to all this. That and I'm not sure you have to tell wine or the SS:HD dedicated exe itself to run at a full ticked rate (no option I have seen for a command line function in the SS:HD itself).

Ubuntu Servers :: Set Up A Backup Of The Windows 7 Pc?

May 16, 2010

I have been hassling with this for several days now. I have 64-bit Ubuntu Server 10.04 running on an Acer Aspire EasyStore H340. I have windows 7 running on a 64-bit desktop pc and on a laptop. I mainly wanted to use the Ubuntu server for a file server, so I installed Samba and created three shares. These do show up in Windows explorer, and I can read and write to them. My windows applications seem to be able to see the shares and open & save files.

My next step was to try and set up a backup of the Windows 7 pc to the Ubuntu server. Windows integrated backup sees the shares and sub-directories within the shares, and the initial part of the backup seems to run OK, but when it tries to save an image of the 'C:" drive it works for a long time and then ends with an error (cannot complete backup).

So, I looked for some free backup programs to try, but these do not allow me to select the shares as a destination (invalid destination). The dialogue sees the drives I have mapped the shares to in Windows, but does not show any sub-directories, and selecting the mapped drive letter does not take as a destination. If I try to browse down through "Network" in the destination dialogue, it selects "Network," but does not expand it or accept it as a destination.

So, I partitioned, formatted as ext3, and mounted my 2nd 1TB SATA drive on the server, and mounted it as "storage." I set this up as share in Samba and gave everyone read-write access, but still no luck selecting it for a backup destination. After some Googling, I downloaded and installed Ext2Fsd-0.48 (a windows 'driver' for Ext2/Ext3). This installed correctly, but when I open the program, neither "Network," the shares, or the mapped drives show up anywhere.

Ubuntu Servers :: Handle Splitting Services Up Between Two Servers?

May 29, 2010

I got my hands on a couple old servers. An HP tc2021 and a Proliant ML110. Sure they're ancient, but I thought they would make a couple of great Ubuntu Servers for a new "start up" business I'm trying out. Now I've got to decide the best scenario to distribute the load between the two servers. I'm going to make an internal domain and will probably be running the following: Kerberos, Samba, Apache, Postfix, mysql, bind, dhcp, SVN, GCC, and Nagios. So in summary, I'll have the following roles; domain controller, web server, file server, and network monitoring services. how they would handle splitting these services up between two servers?

Ubuntu :: Configure A HA Virtual Servers With Windows VMs?

Mar 30, 2010

I have a project in school that the requirement is to show the proof of concept of a high availability virtual servers. the guest operating system for the test case will be a Windows variant and a Linux variant that if the main host that hosts both of this VMs fails, both VMs will be restarted on the backup host. Simple enough with VMware vSphere and citrix xenserver with essentials with their enterprise features, But I am not allowed to use a software that one will need to pay-for or is only a trial version, i need to use an open source solutions, and i am not allowed to use virtualbox.

the school has provided me 2 server class 64bit hardware with intel-vt support, i have my laptop for management tools and to also run a virtual appliance for a iscsi target (openfiler as a vm in virtualbox in my laptop).

I have figured that i will use KVM on a ubuntu server as my hypervisor but i cant find any how-to on how to implement a high availability setup that will run a windows variant as a guest. can some one give me a step by step on how to do this.

from my research it looks like i will need DRBD and heartbeat, but i dont know how to use them and if they are applicable in my needs. I wouldn't probably use DRBD since I have a sudo SAN with my iscsi target, so i can probably use open-iscsi.

Ubuntu Servers :: OpenVPN Slow When Windows Is Used ?

May 16, 2010

I have many openvpn implementations. Every time I use windows shares over openvpn, the speed is no more than 500KB/s, in LAN environment. When I start a copy it reaches 200-300KB/s, when I start second one it reaches 500KB/s. No more is reached after more copies simultaneously. When I use linux to copy files - the first copy reaches 700KB/s, the second copy reaches 2.5MB/s (then the first grows also to 2.5MB/s), the third copy reaches also 2.5MB/s. All of these are copied simultaneously, otherwise when only one is started it sits on 700KB/s. Moreover when 2 of the 3 simultaneous copy processes end, the one left backs at 700KB/s again.

But this is linux. When I use Windows the transfer speed is no more than 400-500KB/s (LAN environment).
The OpenVPN server is always ubuntu (any version - I've tried 6.06, 8.04, 10.04).

Tried the OpenVPN client in ubuntu (and the windows machine behind the ubuntu), in windows (directly installed the client on windows) and it is all the same - no more than 500KB/s.

I can not use this because it is so slooow. When only one file is copied at a time it reaches only 200KB/s!!! Searched all the google results - no one have an answer, although there are many people with the same problem.

Now, I am sure that the problem is in Windows, because when I use linux as a server and as a client, the client copies fast. But when I use windows as machine behind the client it copies slow. I don't know... something in the tcp/ip settings in windows or something...

Ubuntu Servers :: Windows XP Logs On To Samba PDC Instead Of BDC

Feb 3, 2011

I'm running a set of virtual machines (most in ESXi, one in VirtualBox on my desktop) to try and replicate an existing physical network structure with a Samba domain operating across multiple subnets. The layout is:

(ESXi)
* Router - Ubuntu 8.04, running dnsmasq, bridging my 2 virtual subnets (10.10.4.1/24 & 10.10.5.1/24) and my physical network
* PDC - Ubuntu 8.04, configured as a Samba PDC with PAM configured to use LDAP, SMBLDAP etc. on 10.10.4.11
* LDAP - Ubuntu 8.04, running Zimbra 5 mail server, acting as the LDAP backend for Samba on 10.10.4.12
* BDC - Ubuntu 8.04, configured as a Samba BDC with PAM LDAP etc.
* Client1 - Windows XP, joined to domain on 10.10.5.100
(Virtualbox)
* Client2 - Windows XP, joined to domain on 10.10.5.99

Watching /var/log/daemon.log, /var/log/samba/*, smbstatus -bd0 shows that Client1 successfully logs on to the BDC (10.10.5.2) but Client2 logs on to the PDC (10.10.4.11) instead. Both clients have the same subnet, DNS, WINS settings etc. I've seen the issue happen in our physical setup too but very infrequently and usually when there's been a network interruption between the BDC(s) and the LDAP server.

Its shares can be accessed by any computer by going directly to 10.10.1.101, salamander's fixed IP.

My workstation, bear, shows up. I edited hosts to read: "10.10.1.101 salamander"
Any machine can access the share on salamander using the ip address, but not even Bear can connect directly with the computer name.

When I go to networks in Salamander, all it views is itself and a windows network. Inside the windows network is only salamander.

Bear shows up in the list of servers, and also has samba running. Eagle and Bearcub are also ubuntu without samba and do not show up in the list either. Understandably so.

Here is my smb.conf:
